Level 4 generally sucks because you're starting to deal with Level 5 enemies who have a higher proficiency bonus and access to some of the best spells and abilities you get. If you're running around with a bunch of basic single class characters instead of taking advantage of low level character builds, you're going to have a rough time.
Ignore this guy. Clearing an encounter through dialog gives you just as much EXP. All combat usually does is use up your resources in exchange for some cheap weapons to sell.
I was able to do it, but it took me like 6 tries. I had wyll eldrich blast the big fricker down to the stairs below, and then just took out as many of the adds as I could before he came back. Karlach was the only team member alive at the end, had I not gotten a crit the robot would have killed me the next turn. The glaive it drops lasted me until the end of act 3
He's a fun unique boss. A lot of the bosses you can dialogue crush like the Thorm family are awesome.
Frick dialogue wins. The unique fights are actually awesome. Like the doctor in chapter 2 with the unique skills was pure kino.

A lot of people don't know how to use them. I actually watched some streamers play the game and they were all incredibly bad at it. People don't read the tutorials/books/item descriptions or inspect enemies etc.
Apparently Shadowheart's stat spread is the worst in the game and you have to respec her to make her viable at all. Also the trickster is a terrible choice in general for a cleric.

You have to do this with every character as soon as you get Withers. All of them have odd stat numbers, like Gale having 17 in INT and 13 CON when it doesn't work.
If you prioritize dex you can give shart a bow/xbow and eventually get the class trait (divine strike:trickery?) That gives you poison on your attacks, I know it might seek strange but clerics have some of the most flexible Stat build varieties depending on the subclass you choose and dex actually ups your AC with med armor, at the end of the day tho yes trickery cleric isn't the most flashy but can be viable if you do a dex cleric.
The difference between meta whoring and the default builds for many characters is a lot.
There is a viable "metaprostitute" build for each subclass in the game thoughbeit.
You might have to tweak your stats/traits to get it right but it exists.
simply knowing how to use the spells you get will get you a long way even with default builds.
Shadowheart could have 10 in all stats except wisdom and she'd still be extremely useful just walking running around with spirit guardians and the floating weapon spell.

larian games usually get easier and easier as you go, there's zero difficulty spikes on dos2 and 1, the hardest part is when you're at level 1 with no skills and no gear and no gold to buy anything.

generally not THAT much harder i'd say, but there are some nasty surprises that can absolutely frick you over if you're not prepared for it (which you won't be), but that only matters if you abide by the hardcore rule and delete your save after wiping. you can still keep on playing on honor difficulty after wiping and the only consequence is you don't get the die skin i believe

In underdark you can recruit the mushroom guy who can then resurrect the bulette, so it expects you to have 2 mini bosses aiding you in combat. You can also throw the sussur flowers nearby at the adds in that fight to permanently disable them, or just simply throw the boss off the tower.
My loading screen and UI is pixelated as frick does anyone else have that problem? I have everything on max unless there's some cheeky hidden setting somewhere in the files

At this point you can choice to either use the mercs to deal with Nere (and then betray and kill them because they are filthy inferior duergar that don´t deserve any better)
You can also kill that filth beforehand and then take some strategic position to kill all of Nere´s helpers before even detonating the rubble. I personally choose a defensible high ground position and started throwing javelins and shooting arrows without warning. Killed all the ranged attackers before they knew what was happening. Melee fighters were received up top and sent right back down.
Then i detonated the rubble and dealt with the drow when he was all alone. My point is that ff the battle is hard is because you are making it hard on yourself. That´s how this game works.

Inspecting enemies to change prepared spells and preparing an ambush helps.
The only difficulty spike in this game is trying to resist the urge of falling asleep.
A lot of the "difficulty spikes" in chapter 1 should also coincide with your own power spikes at level 5 and 6. With bernard theres a gimmick where he's the only one you actually have to fight while the duregar its a matter of starting the fight from a good position to LoS the mind control manlets until you can take care of them. And yeah that might mean starting a fight manually instead of through dialogue or picking off the stray ones without alerting the others.
As for shadowheart yeah IDK. Most of the time I just use her for utility which was fine since you really only need 1-2 people doing actual work and the few times a buddy has used a cleric in multiplayer its always been sun or tempest to blast dudes like a regular caster so weapons aren't really their thing.

Honestly I randomly discovered it on my first run when the fight went wrong and I had to escape back into the elevators only for them to suddenly become inert when they ported to my last alive dudes floor. As a bonus sorcerers get a scene when getting silenced by it the first time where one of the companions talks to them about it, like karlach being confused since your very existence is supposed to be tied to magic and to stick behind her while you sort it out

I have good reflexes but am dumb so elden ring is easy until they start with the delayed attack shit (which is the point I have to think instead of pressing roll on reflex), and bg3 is hard cause I never think of using pits or remember what the spells do, until you have enough magic items that your characters are disgustingly powerful (around mid chapter 2)

Not really feeling warlock at the end of act 1 right now. Only 2 spells per fight is really lame when sorcerer is twin spelling haste while throwing multiple fireballs per turn and hasted fighter is getting 4-6 2-hander attacks per turn. If I'm lucky I can get a funny environmental kill with eldritch blast.

There's nothing lost from going warlock 2/any charisma spellcaster class 10 instead of warlock 12.
If food weren't so plentiful I could see their utility, but there is zero incentive for me to not nuke down every fight with sorcerer spec'd Gale + hasted Lae'zel and then long rest. My inventory is full of food to the point that it's a hassle to loot things
It's not only that food is plentiful, you SHOULD be resting after nearly every fight in order to se all the damn camp events.
When I got to chapter 3 I installed the "warn you of a camp event" mod, and I ended up just resting without using supplies a bunch of times to se all the backed up events.

I did the same on my second play through and I'm glad I did, I missed out on a ton of shit on my first run because I hoarded camp supplies and the benefit for that was nil.
Warlock gets access to one of the strongest spells in the game - Hunger of Hadar - use it. Pick devil's sight in eldritch invocations so you can hide in your own darkness clouds, pick spells that benefit from upcasting. I had my fiend warlock shut down 5 enemies at once with 100% chance with Command: grovel in act 3 thanks to scorching ray and this hat https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Hat_of_Fire_Acuity
Warlock's biggest benefit over other spellcasters (besides the obvious in the ability to regen spell slots on short rest) is eldritch blast.
Take agonizing blast to add your cha mod to it as damage, grab the spellsparkler from the burning inn to tag lightning charges to every attack, and watch it scale into an absolutely monstrous ranged attack by 5 (where it gets a free second blast).
I'm about to head to act 2 in honor mode and my Tav is a warlock/bard that's been kicking ass with a hex+spellsparkler+eldritch blast combo. Stack on Phalar Aluve's shriek from a teammate or some other damage rider and the damage can get dumb really fast.
at act 3 there's an armor that adds +1 per attack you make cumulative till +9, it's even better than the +cha to cantrip robe you get from saving the tieflings.
That +9 is added to EVERYTHING, each time. Even save spells like fireball, or auto-hit shit like magic missile.
+9 per blast is disgustingly powerful
Murder Tribunal was kinda easy in normal but I think I'm about to get my ass reamed in Tactician, can't imagine fighting it in Honour mode.

If you struggle at any given point during BG3 you should stick to moviegames. It's literally one of the easiest CRPGs I have ever played.

See, that's one of the reasons for the difficulty spike. I'm on my second playthrough and it has been WAAAY easier because I'M NOT using Shadowheart. Her basic class is AWFUL. Her shit are all based on intelligence but she is a wisdom character, that's why she keeps missing. Her DEX is also mediocre. Her STR and DEX are equal, which is atrocious. You should repec her immediately or drop her. Turn her into a light or life cleric. After you know what you're doing the game gets much easier.

Frenzy Barb is fine if you're going TB throw but for a traditional martial it sucks compared to bear totem
Rogue is a fairly useless class altogether, taking more than 3 (for thief) or 4 (for feat) is pointless. Astarion cleans up as a Ranger with a dip into either thief (two hand crossbows) or assassin (strong magic two-handed bow).
Warlock also shines brightest in multiclass and great old one is vastly superior to fiend

Damage on backstab.
Double hand crossbows Ranger is better damage ouptur but not much, more important ranger has bonus to hit with Archery Archery. Ranger is more metagame optimized class but thief is not THAT bad, you can backstab every turn damage is ok.

Yes, locks have a very good spell list and can do great area denial and CC. Hex + eldritch blast is the most boring way to play them. I don't know why you'd even keep hex beyond level 5-ish when there are so many better spells to be concentrating on at that point, like darkness, hunger of hadar, hypnotic pattern, fear, etc.

for compounding damage procs for abilities with damage riders and for the ability to re-cast it without spending more spell slots
I'm not gonna say there aren't other good spells to use but eldritch blast is extremely good damage and the best CC is death.
Explain. Aside from shadowhear and wyll the other 4 are levelled from 1 so everything is player choice. Their stat distribution is obviously not optimal but I can't see how barb, fighter, rogue and wizard are bad classes.
Base stat spreads are always unoptimal, IIRC Karlach starts as frenzy but I could be misremembering.
Straight fighter and rogue are definitely pretty bad. Straight wizard is ok of you go divination or evocation
I'm like 90% certain that the origins all join at level 1 so you can assign their levels/subclasses from there. I think barb in general defaults to frenzy in the subclass level up screen but that's not a canon choice or anything. I can buy rogue not being great, but whats wrong with straight fighter? What other single class martials eclipse it so much that it doesn't even warrant an it's okay?

Either way a straight Paladin or a straight Monk is stronger than a straight Fighter.
Paladin multiclasses get more and bigger smites (bardadin/sorcadin) or smite recharges on short rest (palalock), they're outdone by some of the more broken class/feat combos but are very very strong multiclass characters
paladin is THE strongest martial. Smites are ridiculously strong, the 1 extra attack at level 11 fighter get does not make up for it.
The sad part however is that both are just food for multiclassing.
A paladin 2 or 6/caster is just a paladin+, and 2 levels of fighter for action surge are great on everyone else too.

Its annoying how few domains there are, this shit was in EA for like 5 years.
I'm glad the mod scene took off, there's a mod that adds all the tabletop domains already, it's a 8/10 mod. (2 points removed for adding garbage from the critical role setting book)
I'm looking forward to more in depth mods when the mod tools get released.

real homebrew shit is appalling and I will occasionally let someone at my table use really bad homebrew to dissuade others
Highlights include a guy who played a class that was literally just ben 10's omnitrix, a "cuisiner," and a psychic.
These characters did not last long.
the one homebrew mod I like is the sorcerer subclass "bladeweaver". The gimmick is that after you cast a spell, you can use a single metamagic point to make an attack with any weapon.
It basically fulfills my wish for a class that allows me to make an attack and cast a spell on the same turn without needing some exotic multiclass setup or picking a shitty class like eldritch knight.
It can be overpowered if you combine it with paladin but paladin/sorcs are already strong anyway, it's not that stronger.

Last I checked the super strong builds were Tavern Brawler Barbarian, OH monk with Tavern Brawler, thief, and action surge, Archery Ranger/Rogue, Storm sorc+Tempest cleric, and Blade pact Palalock
sword bard/thief crossbow isthe only one you're missing. It's not new tho.
Also blade pact warlock has been nerfed in honor mode to no longer grant 3 attacks if you multiclass with another class that gives a second atk.
