What's with the sudden explosion of anger towards Starfield?

What's with the sudden explosion of anger towards Starfield? I get it when the game is brand new, but it came out three months ago and people are only just now getting angry. The only thing I can figure is that the game is so long that it actually took people three months to beat and they didn't like what they found at the end of it, but that can't be right. There had to be people who pounded out the game in like a week and told everyone else what happened. So the outrage should have been at launch, not right now.

ever since Morrowind, Bethesda has shown a very obvious and observable pattern of a decline in their games, a decline in rpg elements, writing, character design, world design, and depth
Starfield is the logical conclusion to that pattern, often times people of lower intelligence can't see where something is headed until it gets there, then it hits them like a ton of bricks and they act all surprised

this is what's happening currently with Starfield, despite anyone with half a brain being able to tell what the game was going to be like from the very first gameplay reveal

          Anonymous

That sounds about right. Nobody is angry about Starfield though because Starfield is simply a big fat black hole of creativity. It's more accurate to say people nothing Starfield. Bethesda intentionally made the most boring sci-fi setting ever and then got surprised people didn't care for the rest of their shoddy experiences this entire time and were only putting up with it because their settings were so cool and fun to explore (and Jeremy Soule's great soundtracks). Why they made it such a boring setting with procedural planets I can't say, maybe this really was what they thought would be interesting, maybe their shitty tech was only capable of generating boring planets, I don't know but I do know nobody played Bethesda games for the boring stories, unlikable characters, clunky gameplay and outdated tech and Bethesda themselves only realized after they released the multi million game. It's a game fundamentally designed that it ended up getting made by the last people in the universe who should've made it. It's baffling.

Starfield doesn't do anything impressive, it doesn't do anything risky, Hell it doesn't do anything that would evoke any kind of emotion out of the player. The most generic game of the year, and that's a feat. There is no discussion about it, no memes to and nobody even cares enough to make porn of it. What a waste.

I wrote this in a really stupid way woops. Probably should be something more like "it's a game fundamentally designed in ways that go against Bethesda's strengths as a game developer" or something

the game was conceptualize around when no mans sky and scam citizen were promising similar things.
they just made every single wrong choice wrong for it. imagine if it was just no man's sky but with a bethesda game on top. pick your ship, shoot through the star, land somewhere interesting and explore to find cool loot. make the universe and the planets small so traveling through them isn't a chore and you can easily bump into things.

but they wanted a gorillion planets to impress normalgays and just slapped the laziest procgen ever over bland gameplay. if procgen is a fundamental part of your game the gameplay need to be good and fun on its own

It's very possible this was the original idea for the game but their shitty tech couldn't handle it. For frick's sake, I don't mean to be that guy who harps on about Bethesda's terrible engine but they're using blue noise to generate stuff on planets. Even Minecraft doesn't use noise anymore and Mojang isn't exactly known for having lots of competent programmers

You're right about the decline, but at least game like Fallout 4 despite being a looter shooter and not an RPG, it was FUN. That's what shocked me the most, I would be fine if Starfield were like Fallout 4

It's more real RPG than FO4, but that's not saying much. It's the best game at launch they've released in over 10 years, but it's too little too late. Most times you walk in a straight line to the compass marker and loot some uninteresting shit or crafting resource.

I created a character with the Professor class, with the idea of exploring new worlds and documenting my findings. You scan planets and the map tells you the fauna, flora and resources when you're there... BUT THERE'S NO CODEX FOR THE SHIT YOU FOUND. You're in your outpost, you need some resource you KNOW you've seen before, but on which planet? Hope you noted it down on your notepad. Want to build an outpost on a planet with a lush environment? Better check Google because the game isn't telling you the ones you already found.

I'm only giving this another shot when they add survival mode. The amount of medication and ailments they added could have made the game a lot more interesting, but they pussied out and removed it at the last minute. homosexuals.

Probably a lot of people waited for the Black Friday sale. Also maybe some kind of "give it a chance to see if they'll fix it" mentality.

Main issue with the game besides the shitty Star Ocean 3 ending is the sense of exploration from Skyrim and Fallout 4 is missing. You can't really wander and discover something because any place that isn't a set location is a procedurally generated wasteland full of the same dozen different pirate bases spaced 3km apart from each other.

In earlier games I could pretend to ignore fast travel. Here it's an integral part of the experience.

Skyrim anniversary edition includes a survival mode that disables fast travel even. I don't know how Bethesda lost so much quality so quickly.

        Anonymous

its even more than that, its inevitable, everything is instanced, so the only way "out" is fast travel, which includes getting in your ship, which is just fast travel with a cutscene.

          Anonymous

i dont know a single actual human being that doesnt fast travel every chance they get in a video game unless it's a literal walking sim, this feels like a made up complaint

            Anonymous

Look I use fast travel a lot but I still enjoy exploring and shit If I feel like I should just spam fast travel to the next location instead of wasting my time exploring their is a problem. Seriously starfield is a game that could be vastly improved by removing 90% of world because the game is mostly empty space with nothing in it.

      Anonymous

On top of that, none of the side systems are worth anything. Settlements are pointless since you can just buy any resources needed. Ship design is pointless because space combat is barely worth mentioning. Crafting is pointless because you can't craft weapons and you'll probably find a gun better than the one you just modified in the next dungeon. Cooking is pointless because food only restores 5hp and gives a 5 minute miniscule buff.

        Anonymous

It really boggles the mind doesn't it. How on earth did all of this even happen, when they've got their own games that they could take inspiration from? Almost seems ilke they don't know why their games worked in the past and they've just been winging it.

          Anonymous

it baffles me they made crafting so much worse when it worked in fallout 4.
every mechanic in starfield is like they took stuff from the previous games and twisted it to be pointless, convoluted and annoying.

take crafting. you need so many different materials and perks that it's impossible to remember what and all the choices end up being just stat increase.
compare skyrim instead: get the related smithing perk, slap the related ingot on your sword and get a damage boost. simple, efficient and doesn't feel like shit to find a better weapon because you didn't waste so much time and effort and by the end you can craft shit so busted any other reward is pointless

let me put it this way: 76 is miles better and more worth your money.
starfield is a baffling game, it's like they actively designed so every mechanic fought against eachother. exploration for its own sake doesn't exist, it's all procgen shit. exploration for rewards is just as worthless because you will see the same fricking ebemy base (down to mob and loot placement). every mechanic is equally convoluted and pointless and it features what is probably one of the worst level up system in a bethesda game.
and the lore, world and characters are forgettable, overly safe and bland.

it's a bethesda game with no exploration, no interesting loot and no interesting lore. even 76 managed to have some of that

Thats not real criticism, nor does it justify you morons spamming the board with these same garbage IQ killing threads with the same posters circle jerking themselves with the same fricking NPC "Game is bad" tier shit already plaguing every other videogame thread.

hit the nail. Ganker criticism of the game is just "game is bad wah wah" coping salted with the latest wave of complaints they got from ecelebs that made a video for them because all they want is to hear "game is bad"

but because they never played the game all their complaints amount to what the eceleb tells them aka. not their own complaints it amounts to "wah game is bad wah, validate me plx"

It does not matter who wrote it. It matters that QA/Todd/Playesters/Shareholders, etc all saw it and said 'oh yeah this is fine' and shipped it for 60 dollars. Blaming the writer or quest designer popping a cyst on a gangrenous limb. It does nothing.

I feel like they were out of touch with what fans enjoy in their games when they started adopting the "perfection is when there is nothing left to take away" philosophy. I think they are far too gone now but hope the next elder scrolls is decent

buyer's remorse sinks in after you can no longer get attention on reddit by saying 'yeah hurr it's actually good you're all just stupid'

I've never played a game in my 30 years of living on this planet that felt more like it was produced by AI than Starfield. And I've played thousands upon thousands of games.
Bethesda deserved a Cyberpunk tier shitstorm except 50x as bad. It is infuriating that nobody gave a shit and the game just faded into nothingness and Bethesda sweeps it under the rug like they did Fallout 76. This studio needs to be dissolved.

Same exact wavelength here, anon. I tried it via Game Pass and felt basically the same way that you do about it and Bethesda. I felt insulted by what I was playing and as if I was watching the entire industry as a whole suffer while I did so. I also think that in a just world that Bethesda would have been dissolved at this point.

well put. pretty much sums up how most players and fans felt when playing this game. the worst part was how hyped up this game was too. people were claiming this was going to be the goty and that the game would be replayable for years just like skyrim.

And then they have the balls to parade trailers with screens full of 10/10 scores from nobody reviewers, all paid for. Literally just completely ignoring all criticism and basically laughing in people's faces. And the worst part is, they'll get away with it, too. Because haha le todd meme he's such a liar it's so funny, and when TESVI comes out, everyone will do this all over again, and when it turns out to be a dumbed down, generic mess, much worse than their previous game, as has happened with their last 5 games or so, people will act surprised and defend it to the grave saying it's n-not that bad.

Isn't 76 decent by now? I only played about 10 hours or so of it 2 years ago and at least had more fun with it than 4

Nah. No point in it being multiplayer, the shooting and combat feel floaty, and quests are all instanced. It's shit. It's fallout 4 without any real locations or questlines and the combat is a laggy mess.

It's mainly because of youtube videos.
    Normaloids just function that way.

As for the reason Starfield failed, it's been discussed ad nauseam.
The issue is that it's boring. Why is it boring? Because the world, lore, characters, etc. are bland, unimaginative and lack any kind of personality or identity.
This is the best BGS game stability-wise and despite what some youtubers may say Bethesda gameplay isn't "outdated" as you can see from the fact that prior BGS games like Skyrim or Fallout 4 are still being played and have a higher player count than Starfield. The problem with this game is that it just isn't interesting to explore.

      Anonymous

      This is correct.
It is also why Cyberpunk got seen by so many people as a joke even though on release, it was better than 99% of the slop that comes out nowadays. People unironically just follow twitch streamers and youtubers, nobody forms their own opinions anymore. That is not hyperbole, the actual amount of people who try things out for themselves and make their own opinions are an incredibly small minority. Even in Ganker, almost every post you see here is some moronic youtuber's meme video being parroted or some article being pushed and everyone just going along with it, falseflagging and engaging in moronic shitflinging instead of discussing the game. It's just the social media era, basically makes discussing vidya online impossible.

The real answer is: a lot of video essayists and ecelebs started saying the game is bad. And people are sheep who follow whatever the popular opinion is.
This is also the same reason why the game had a positive reception when it launched and for more than a month.
People accepted that the game is le good so they said it was good. Now the opinion is that the game is le bad and they say that it is bad.
If it was a broken game on release then it would have been a different story. Negative reviews would have started propping up in the first week, like Cyberpunk.

The reality is Starfield is a boring average game. It's not objectively bad and whoever says that never played a truly awful game. It's not a good game either because it does not excel in anything.

      Anonymous

I can’t help but think of just how many resources the developers of Starfield had at their disposal when developing it, and I feel pretty comfortable calling it a legitimately bad game in light of that. Even disregarding that, I honestly don’t agree that the game is average. I’d argue the average video game is somewhat fun and engaging.

      Anonymous

      >average game
You sound like a moron who thinks he's smart. The game being polished and high-budget doesn't make it good. It being big doesn't make it good. There are many games that come out nowadays that are average. Your average yearly CoDs, Spidermans, most fighting games, etc. They're shovelware. They're safe, they don't do anything new, but they're not particularly bad, either. They're just there.

Starfield is bad. Objectively. It's way behind tech-wise, it's written horrendously, the gameplay loop is repetitive, there are zero memorable characters or locations, etc. None of this is 'average'. It's bad. It would be bad if it was made by an indie dev, and it is ESPECIALLY bad when it's made by one of the biggest developers around.

What happens in Starfield when you reach the "edge of the map"? What's the justification you can't traverse the entire planets? Mountains? Mystery death fog? I am actually curious, I don't mind it because obviously you can't make planets in a video game but none of the maps look large. There does need to be a good justification if each planet doesn't have more than like a 4 square km patch you can walk on.

Because the ship is the anchor for the world map you're on in procedurally generated areas, and yeah, you can reroll the RNG as often as you want, there still won't be anything to find. That's why the game fricking sucks.

The planets mainly exist as locales to survey for survey data and experience as well as to hunt down specific minerals unique to the chunk. I could however vision them having "regions" of the planet that act as the same kind of logical boundaries as individual chunks do so in all honestly it's most likely a measure to ensure the map remains performant.

Pete has been pretty vocal about MS changing their methods in regards to studios they work with. They have sadly discovered that modern game developers have zero passion and drive and will do nothing or do it wrong if not whipped by external management. They are more alike beasts of burden than thinking humans and MS will use this to pound stagnant studios like Beth and Arkane into the ground until they make them some fricking money

but e-celebs just copy paste public opinion. they ARE the sheep.

i dont know a single actual human being that doesnt fast travel every chance they get in a video game unless it's a literal walking sim, this feels like a made up complaint

        >this feels like a made up complaint
Just because most people use fast travel doesn't mean it's justified to remove one of the features that has been a staple in Bethesda games for like 20 years now. Sure you can fast travel everywhere in Skyrim, but you still have to actually visit those places at least once, and you can always ignore fast travel anytime because it's a choice. You can't do any of that in Starfield because there is no choice.

Also if you continue to remove shit just because "most people don't use it", the result is a boring and bland fricking game including storytelling. Ask Emil for proof lmao.

most people have a complaint that is repeating ecelebs instead of a personal complaint, like "desing document" or "19k tri cube"

you can tell its not their own because it always comes up in these threads. truth is a lot of people just watch ecelebs for schadenfraude instead of actually engaging in the content. nobody who plays the games even notices these things.

"nobody who plays the games even notices these things" isn't an argument when there are tons of people that actually played the game and repeat the same shit these e-celebs are saying and more. cry in the corner you shill b***h.

              >no you fricking moron, the public in general does not like the game. e-celebs are only there for them to articulate better with coherent points,
false dichotomy. and you just agreed with the point i was making. people don't have organic points they themselves arrived at, these people are the ones who the eceleb ragetube content gets made for, and then extracted out of their advertisement dollars. this is the basic premise for how youtube works. i can easily find a 500000 video essays about how X is bad, but attributing that to some kind of general consesus is a hilariously bad false dichotomy. there is no audience for making lukewarm praise about a game that is enjoyed by a lukewarm audience. you either have one extreme like nintendo or fromsoft kids frothing at the mouth the praises towards their games or the opposite extreme of low IQ, poorly constructed ragetube content which condenses reddit complaints into a more digestable, "coherent" version of what the main criticisms from the group that already dislikes the game are, for people who are already in disliking of the game.

              >points that you can't refute for shit so you just cope behind strawmans and ad hominems. i don't watch eceleb ragetube shit so i have no idea what these complaints are, but the design document thing i have no comment on since it's such an insane dumb comment, its obviously bethesda's prerogative to design games how they want, and it's clearly worked for them historically so that's enough of that, and the 19k tri cube thing is literally made up/dumb ragetube ammunition because even if we suppose a 19k tri cube exists it's either menu only or LOD0 asset. 19k isnt actually that many tris if you are talking in terms of modern tri counts

Talking to a moron like you is painful. The reviews on Steam or on the Xbox app literally proves these points are organic and it blows your whole "no one that played the game notices this" point out the solar system but all you focus about is e-celeb shit which you also missed the fricking point.

How do you "improve" on loading screens? What the frick does that even mean?
You morons have no idea about anything related to video game development.

Even a moron realizes Bethesda's quest design is ancient and having to return again and again to the quest giver just to update the fricking quest sucks. All Todd has to do is just add in long distance communication especially in a FRICKING SCI-FI WORLD and the loading screens would be cut in half.

its not really "sudden" its just that there are no more positive reviews.

In fact, there are actually less negative reviews for starfield compared to launch.

The one advantage the nu-Bethesda had prior to Starfield was the stellar exploration of a handcrafted map that made up for absolutely everything else with diminishing success. They haven't got it anymore.

Depends, because the game was also broken on launch, but the only loading screens you'll see in the current build are on elevators and when you fast travel. Being disingenuous towards Starfield and acting like having a loading screen for entering a building, exiting a building, entering your ship, taking off from a planet, flying towards a new planet, and docking at a new planet is equivalent to an elevator you'll have to stand in for 20 seconds once every 5-8 hours is fricking moronic.

Feel free to keep proving that you don't play video games. Even on mediocre computers at launch, shit like Morrowind, Oblivion and even Fallout 3 kept you in a loading screen for any detrimental amout of time, which is the problem with Shitfield since you're sitting through 5 loading screens just to switch planets. I guess that's completely comparable to entering the Fighter's Guild and having to wait 0.3 seconds.

Man modern Bethesda fans are fricking moronic.

You make a good point though, there isn't that much point in investing in the "no loading screen" feature because a fast enough PC will load so quickly you won't notice the loading screen. In fact, a Bethesda game is perfect for this, since they're so replayable, and will be played decades from now.

Which is a terrible thing. Shit like Morrowind and Oblivion only required bugfixes to further cement themselves as gaming pillars, but all the issues in Shitfield are baked into the game itself. Ironing out the few remaining bugs for example doesn't fix the terrible leveling system or the 6 loading screens per planet problem.

They clearly regressed in overall game design and how they space these loading screens. In all their prior games player spends considerable amount of time in overworld. You can skip it with fast travel, but this is on you. Overworld is a giant chunk of game content. In Starfield there isn't even overworld, it's all just loading from one room to another.
Also, do you imply loading in video games is some kind of magic which can't be optimized? I'm a senior software engineer and the most interesting aspect of my work is optimizing loading and calculating shit. Somehow even ubishit open worlds figured out loading optimization. I'm also playing Hogwarts Legasy right now and you I see loading screens orders of magnitude less than in Starfield. If Bethesda couldn't figure out optimization in their shitty engine or can't work around this limitation and compensate in game design, it's 100% on them. And defending their poor decisions is just plain stupid.

It's a reasonable stance considering we're talking about Bethesda so I don't see what the issue is. Good on them for not being moronic.

Loadings from the main menu, save loadings and fast travel that you're in no way forced to take. You said you haven't played the game; why are you pretending that Night City isn't one continuous map that would justify prolonged render every time you load in?

Are you just randomly schizoing now? My entire response to that 'lol' is that CP77 loadings are there because it's one continuous map, and they will definitely be longer than one Starfield ship interior load screen. The difference is that no one will suffer these loadings unless you fast travel, and even then, the longest loading screen is the one you do from the main menu because it generates the map again. There won't be a loading screen every time you enter a building, ride an elevator, or enter a vehicle. Something that these Polish fricks learned back in the 2010s with Witcher 3 even.

I described to you where they are. Fast travel, save, and main menu. I guess there could be one when you see Johnny's memories. Maybe? I don't even remember if there was one; they always mask them with some actual in-game scenes instead of 5 loading screens. Wait transitions in quests are done by a simple, instant screen wipe.
So no, schizo, I once again have no idea what you're talking about. You are free to post what activity requires loading the screen because even races are done by a screen wipe.

Alright, man, I see you are mentally unstable, and 5 loading screens to go from planet to planet pretending to be a spaceship traversal (unless it's a known location) is the same thing as 1 loading screen to fast travel anywhere to anything in CP77. I leave you with your shizophrenia and a strawman you're gay wrestling here.
Once again there are no in-world loading screens in CP77 on technical ones. Count the amount buildings you can enter in Starfield without a loading screen. It would be interesting comparison.

Loading screens instead of actual space traversal in a game from a company known for its biggest strength being the exploration of the world they made. Also, nice example of a loading screen is that actually doubles as party banter because they actually talk in the elevator since Bioware actually knew how boring this would be, unlike Bethesda, who queued them up in front of every building in Starfield.

It helps when OP (the guy who makes all the starfield threads) has been bumping this thread and keeping it from archiving for 10 hours

It isn't sudden and it isn't anger. It is disappointment. Todd lied yet again, so now they are paying for the deception.

for the first hundred hours of starfield you just kinda expect it will get better. after that when you start a new gae or jump through the unity you understand how bad it is in terms of setting and all you're left with is a worse far cry with fricking awful progression.

I genuinely wanted to like this game because, even for how overrated it was, Skyrim was a fun game. Starfield just sucks. The companions suck. The gameplay sucks. The quests and factions suck. The main plot sucks. The "exploring" sucks. Space sucks. Nothing about this game is good, and once the novelty wears off it is an abysmal game. Bethesda and its writers in particular should be ashamed.

Property is an extension of oneself, long, intrusive loading screens are a result of poor hardware. Since hardware is your property, intrusive loading screens are a personal failing. What you percieve to be a loading screen problem is actually you being inferior.

all the loading screens are just a quirk of the engine, each instance is its own, and it will never improve unless bethesda updates its outdated design

Bethesda created a game where the game parts were optional, but didn't bother to make them interesting.
You don't discover places on a planet, they're given to you as soon as you land. Even in Skyrim, while you were given the final destination as your marker, you still had the opportunity to go away from the road and find places. Shrines, draugr, bandit outposts, more draugr, a mining village, and more draugr. But what's between you and the signposted POIs? Oh, not even a hazard you need to find a way to traverse?
I know you wouldn't get space Thalmor carting around prisoners, but you could have pockets of danger. A beacon that you press a button on that has someone warping in after a short while, a radio station that has old signals that might lead you elsewhere, space hillbillies in a cave making moonshine. Just *something* that isn't just traipsing across a procgen landmass.

I can't speak for everyone, but personally, I have met like 40+ people who have had some variation of "I ain't buying/playing it until the 'Essential' mods come out"
and that was before the game even came out and people knew frick all about the type of content the game would have, there is a HUGE part of the Bethesda fandom who just refuse to play any of their games without mods and just immediately have the opinion of "without mods, its shit"

like, I can enjoy a good mod for a game, but I have grown to really hate the community that many games modding scenes have

    >daggerfall is ok
    >morrowind is the goat of open world games
    >super excited for oblivion
    >it turns out to be generic and dumbed down, disappointed but still enjoy the game
    >hope skyrim has a little more depth and more options for character building than oblivion, and is less generic
    >skyrim has less of everything
    >cant even cast spells without switching between melee and magic which was oblivions biggest innovation to es combat
    >cant even create your own spells
    >even less weapons
    >Get told its for "balance reasons" but the game is still unbalanced as frick and easy to break
    >get told alien worlds and interesting settings are too weird for normies so they need to make generic stuff like the same viking buildings copy pasted a hundred times in an area with bears, cougars, elk.
    >bethesda falls on its face in fallout 4 and 76, many fans dont like the innovations in those games
    >starfield is released and its a generic/hard scifi game that turns into star wars in ng+. basically skyrim but not open world and more rpg mechanics
    >normies arent biting it
    >autists arent biting it
    >game seems to be made for boomers who are really into space geology for some reason
    >people saying they just want to make another good game like "skyrim"
    >mfw everyone says the atmosphere in skyrim was amazing
    >mfw music was the best thing about that atmosphere and they fired the composer because some bawd accused him of groping her or whatever. no more amazing music for next elder scrolls, instead they get some guy who puts out generic crap
its over man. i dont even feel vindicated for being right for 10+ years. im just sad the c**ts at bethesda were too egotistical to listen to their fanbase.

The blood on the doorposts will be a sign to mark the houses in which you live. When I see the blood, I will pass over you and will not harm you when I punish the Egyptians. You must celebrate this day as a religious festival to remind you of what I, the LORD, have done. Celebrate it for all time to come.” The LORD said, “For seven days you must not eat any bread made with yeast — eat only unleavened bread. On the first day you are to get rid of all the yeast in your houses, for if anyone during those seven days eats bread made with yeast, he shall no longer be considered one of my people. On the first day and again on the seventh day you are to meet for worship. No work is to be done on those days, but you may prepare food. Keep this festival, because it was on this day that I brought your tribes out of Egypt. For all time to come you must celebrate this day as a festival. From the evening of the fourteenth day of the first month to the evening of the 21st day, you must not eat any bread made with yeast. Get woke, go broke. For seven days no yeast must be found in your houses, for if anyone, native-born or foreign, eats bread made with yeast, he shall no longer be considered one of my people.”

Normies are slow on the uptake. It took years and years and Fallout 76 for them to finally realize Fallout 4 was shit and where it all went bad for bethesda. And a good chunk of them still defend it.

It's a mediocre game that does nothing new or interesting, that they pretend is a revolutionary cutting-edge experience, and then get actually mad at anybody that doesn't enjoy exploring 1600+ barren moonscapes.

It makes perfect sense that the reviews would dip after a while. FO4 and SF both have totally promising intros (if you don’t realize how shallow things will become) and the world seems so massive and POTENTIALLY fun for hours until the bad writing, meaningless leveling, borderlands-tier loot, and procgen starts being felt by the player. They’re games you gradually grow to hate. It’s only once the final shred of goodwill is lost that Beth games will be properly received at launch, with the beginnings being viewed with the deserved cynicism.
