this is such a dumb take, you havent played the game, haven't you?.
1e is my favorite D&D edition but the player's handbook is fricking trash, it doesnt explain shit about how the game works. I think it has like 2 pages about how combat works and yet spends like 10 pages talking about rules for the psionic class, a class so moronic that no one plays it. crunch and fluff are mixed together, the whole thing is a fricking mess.
Nah, it's more about the effort involved in being a basic b***h troll.
WotC sucks, like all companies do, but to hear our most basic b***h of basic b***h trolls tell it, D&D raped their mothers and killed their fathers.
Sure, they're just doing it because they're basic b***h trolls, and basic b***h trolls complain about whatever happens to be popular on whatever board they decided to be basic b***h trolls on, but you really need to take a fricking break. You might actually start believing your attention-whoring trolling, and that would be fricking sad.
>they're a bogeyman
So then what term *should* we be using for the type who want you to ignore the game rules to jerk them off and make them feel awesome regardless of the terrible quality of the decisions and unwillingness to learn how their character works, that seem to be ubiquitous today, unlike back in the 3e days?
Because those people absolutely exist, I joined a group of them in 2021, and when they were having in, I very frequently wasn't. Didn't make a scene about it, but when scheduling issues gave me a reason to exit, I realized I had no interest in coming back. And those people want completely incompatible things to what I enjoy from a TTRPG.
>storyshit
Isn't that just games with lots of out of character mechanics designed to generate a particular style of plot arc, like Fate compels or Savage worlds bennies or whatever?
> anyone who doesn't enjoy what I enjoy is a trolllll. Reeeeeeeeee!
Take your meds if you're delusional, or go frick yourself if you're just being a c**t. Either way, I don't care to waste time trying to have a reasonable discussion with a disingenuous passive aggressive twat tonight.
Based on the handbook? It's not a contest. The 4e one is the only one that bothered to have a graphic designer on staff and everything is easily cross-referenced and indexed.
Its really unclear what aspect OP is asking about.
4e has good organization even though I don't like the mechanics, art direction, or graphic design.
The 3.0 PHB has the nicest cover, IMO, and the best interior artwork overall. I really like that pencil sketch look they use between chapters and the stained parchment BG, most if which is also in the 3.5. I also like a bunch of the mechanics.
AD&D 1 & 2 have some nice mechanics, and some of the AD&D ones have nice covers.
The 5e one, I like the page background on regular phb pages more than for the other editions. It has some nice graphic design.
> good game mechanics. > horrible organization and presentation. > shit art.
I like GURPS game mechanics, but GURPS core set is a fricking mess. Never mind when you add other sources and need to deal with cross referencing hell.
Strictly for D&D? 4e, hands down. While I have had lots of fun with all of the systems, 4e was the only one that "clicked" for me and my group. Hell, we're still playing it to this day, group turned level 14 last month and we are currently in the Elemental Chaos in search of who is giving the Prince of Frost his "Winter Devices" that are plunging the world into neverending winter.
I'll agree with you that Paizo knows how yo do layout and presentation. The PF1 rules design policies and management led to "3.5 but worse" in most areas, but the books are certainly pretty, and well laid out.
I will always be fond of 3E because of the Todd Lockwood art. It's not even that technically good but it captured something about D&D that will always stay in my heart. And the dragons were great.
In the picture? 2e by far.
From all games? I appreciate the Dolmenwood PHB most, but it's not exactly released in physical quite yet. I've throw it past so many new and old players now and everyone comes away super happy with it.
Ah yes, the tasteful option that everyone else overlooked
I second this. I guess not technically a PHB, but has all the same content and much more, and is still D&D. It is a genuinely beautiful book, in terms of content, and it's fantastically laid out for what is essentially a BECMI compilation, and I always have a soft spot for that 90s fantasy line art.
Might genuinely be the single best book under the D&D brand.
Thank you. I believe it's the single best book as well. Even if you have the whole BECMI collection (the best D&D system in my opinion), the RC is the most polished and concise single book in the series. I think it's underrated.
2nd Edition has always been my favorite. The perfect mix of 1e crunchy weirdness fixed with actual organisation. The art is also fantastic! Out of those not present, it's Deadlands Classic for me.

The 5e one is definitely the most satisfying to wipe my ass with. Pure schadenfreude.
Jesus christ, take a holiday, you pathetic loser holy shit.
>being assmad on behalf of a company
I shiggy diggy.

He's literally a WotC "influencer". This is his job. It's slipped a few times in other threads where he does this shit.
>basic b***h troll tries to go on the offensive
>via pure bullshit
lol, nice try.
Take a break. You've cracked. Maybe don't waste your life complaining about a game you don't even play.
>D&D raped my mother and killed my father!
Ah, if only it had done the opposite.
So go make a shitstorm about WotC employing marketers who are using the big bad N word while on WotC's dime.
cope from the 5eCuck
Second post, best post.
I respect my ass way to much to wipe it with 4e or 5e material. Plus I'd be risking catching aids considering who wrote it.
For content, or graphic design?
3.5
What changed between 89' 2nd edition and 95' second edition?
Layout only. It's a bigger book, but they only futzed with the font and art. It's generally held to be an uglier work.
Theatre kids ruined the hobby or something. That's what I've been told at any rate.
Aren't theatre kids the people today who don't actually want to play a game anymore, they just want a group storytelling activity?
They're a boogeyman from the same troll trying to force "storyshit." Do us all a favor and don't pay any attention to is.
>they're a bogeyman

4E's for these exact reasons.
The organization and formatting are lightyears ahead of every other edition and 99% of RPGs.
Its really unclear what aspect OP is asking about.

I, too, prefer the 4e one.
Easy

Of those presented:
Cover - 3.5 but also 4e for different reasons
Layout and organization - 4e
Rules - 4e
Of those not presented:
Pathfinder CRB and PF2e Player Core 1 and 2
Simply, they have good rules, good art, good layout, and are simply better books.
I'll agree with you that Paizo knows how yo do layout and presentation. The PF1 rules design policies and management led to "3.5 but worse" in most areas, but the books are certainly pretty, and well laid out.
>PF2e
Absolute shit taste. Paizo has good layout, but trash art, and PF2 has garbage rules to boot.
I will always be fond of 3E because of the Todd Lockwood art. It's not even that technically good but it captured something about D&D that will always stay in my heart. And the dragons were great.
Honestly? 5e
It's not a great system, but in terms of design and layout, I do genuinely love that PHB.
This, it lacks in content, but it's well organized and has good artwork.
In the picture? 2e by far.
From all games? I appreciate the Dolmenwood PHB most, but it's not exactly released in physical quite yet. I've throw it past so many new and old players now and everyone comes away super happy with it.
3.5 based purely on the cover.
That's not fair because 3.0 looks better and is less overdesigned but the light isn't hitting it right.
3rd and 4th. Had the most sovl.
4e is my least favorite D&D edition but damn, the do know how to make a good player's handbook
Ah yes, the tasteful option that everyone else overlooked

technically not a players handbook, but the patricians choice nonetheless.
One that isn't D&Dogshit.
2nd Edition has always been my favorite. The perfect mix of 1e crunchy weirdness fixed with actual organisation. The art is also fantastic! Out of those not present, it's Deadlands Classic for me.
3.5 entirely for the cover aesthetic.
