It's not consistent, but the aesthetics are always good. I want to hug an elf.

True. They never seem to do the whole ethereal, graceful, nature-loving, innately magical, giga-purity thing of LotR-style elves either, they just make them "blonde human but with longer lifespan and pointy ears"

        Anonymous

That would be another rant, even their coombrained depictions are often lackluster. There is hardly any ethereal and sylph-like quality to them. Rarely any dignity or elegance. Or any regard to how an elf should be drawn differently compared to a human next to them. Standard anime faces, and if the artist usually draws thick or cowtitted females, he won't stop himself and maybe tone it down for the elves, he just lazily slaps pointy ears on the same exact body he draws anyway.

Oversexualized and clownishly exaggerated. But, most Japanese fiction is clownishly exaggerated, that's how it goes when a tradition-fixated culture's form of theatre is kabuki.

Inferior in most instance and insultingly lazy. Their treatment in many works is also hurting my European soul.
Congrats posting an image with actual male elves in it, because their continued (implied) non-existence, either narratively or by simply not showing up at all, hurts Japanese elves so much. They are mostly relegated to harem-members and fricktoys for the self-insert MC and thus are never allowed to outshine him. Or anyone else. Turning them into an all-female race also continues the trend of making them a joke or poor victims of sexual power and debasement fantasies.
Really, for how Japanese elves tend to make them thousands of years old (much less it seems than many western fantasy settings that downgrade their age since Tolkien), they are very unimpressive overall, either being slightly good archers or slightly good mages (god-forbid something else), but you can guarantee that some human will be much better than them at whatever for whatever reason. Western fantasy can have that problem too of making them the punching bag for whatever the author wants to jerk off today, but Japs really have the elves be top-dogs.
Japanese elves that help the good races in their struggle against the armies of darkness? Rarely to be seen, they are just lazy buttholes doing nothing of worth all day. Elfen ruins? Legendary elfen swords and awe-inspiring elfen magic? Nope, just living in some mudhut, primitive villages.
Next part is that some of the Japanese elves that actually go against these trends aren't really elves and don't count (Elezen, Hylians).
    They are just sad.

      Feel like ranting.
Go look up some polls of most popular elf characters from anime and manga. It will be a she, and she will be there because she is paired up with some human that she is explicitly and implicitly in love with, or in some way part of his harem. Look at what people that argue for Japanese elves will post in here: waifus. And they are only popular because they love a human.
Yeah, you can probably pull some elf out of your arse that supposedly is very popular and isn't coupled with some human (or something else not elf. Frick, it shall never be a male elf), but I bet most people won't have heard of her.

      What else is there?
If there are ever prideful, it's to humble them, or as a joke. But even that is often missing and they are just regular nice anime girls.
Are they ever wise? Is there truly an elf from a Japanese work that feels like an ancient being that has seen lots of shit and learned from it? Can be a teacher to the younger race?
They have no narrative purpose in most cases, they don't really represent anything, they have no role in their settings. They are just there because they have to and so that we get something more to sexualize and downgrade into the most childish variant of its initial expression in high fantasy literature.
If their fans praise something about them, then it's their looks and that's it. Rarely how they are written, rarely what they do, their deeds and their contributions to the setting, rarely what they encompass on a deeper spiritual or metaphorical level.

That's more a problem of the anime industry at large. Most works are aimed at otakus that have to buy merchandise so of course most characters are going to be female, fall into one of the token personalities and more or less be available for the self insert generic MC. The elf part is just a checkbox in designing the character. Add to that that fantasy works ahve been on the rise lately after a fairly long drought, but why is that? Isekai is trendy, everyone wants a share of the clammy neetbucks, so now everyone writes shit isekai works that, like already said, have to focus on anything but writing. This is not an excuse but with the media like it is now there's not much more to be expected.

I do, and it does some things better in regards to writing elves than most other Japanese works. Hell, just taking the huge lifespan into account and making it matter instead of being just a meaningless number is already better than the vast majority of dumb isekai with some random elf in it.
It also has a lot of problems when it comes to writing elves that are already mentioned in these rants.

Like how large their ears are, love me some long ears. Western artists should take note, ab elfs ears shouldn't be shorter than Link's.

Although they are a tad one note, like anon said in . That said, i think /tg/ will place too much emphasis on world building and lore, when truth be told it's often better to do more with less. The goal of a GM should be convey as much as possible in the least amount of words that a player can still clearly understand, leaving the rest to player imagination.

But still, I'd be lying if I tried to convince anyone that Japanese Elves actually a good job at facilitating imagination to begin with. All the legitimately impressive settings from anime don't even have Elves to begin with, fantasy included.

          >WoW elf ears are too big.
I've never seen the issue, especially within the context of RTS games and an MMO where I remember usually having my camera relatively zoomed out. If the ears were any smaller, I probably wouldn't even be able to tell it's an elf from a distance.
Which, well it's been muddied today, Warcraft was really on point about giving all the races extremely distinguishable silhouettes. Which is really important when players often cover themselves in whatever excessively designed armor they farmed for in the lastest raid.

But that more of Ganker related matter.

wait, nvm, found what they are.
the first three are a somewhat cut-down version of the Rules Cyclopedia, but with data only going up to 9th level, the one after is B-11: King's Festival, and all the rest is a Replay Series called "Apocalypse of Mystara"

Kinda wish that replay series could get translated.

Those first three seen here [...] are what constitute the BECMI book here in the West. The rest of them are I believe a mix of adventure modules/replays (a Japanese novella retelling an adventure done primarily as a story. Those adventure modules/replays are far more boring in terms of art. Wish there was way more art in them (and wish WotC would release them as PoD on DM's Guild for funsies) but the art that is there is pretty good.

homosexual, it's obvious what I meant.
In the original legends the elves were a people who were immortal.
That is the only thing that will differentiate them from humans.
Tolkien's elves have many things besides their immortality that differentiate them from humans.

No, in the traditional Germanic lore where Elves are from they aren't just immortals. They were supernaturally beautiful beings closer to nature spirits or lesser gods than to humans, and pre-Christian and even still for awhile long after official Christianization Nordic peoples made offerings to them similarly to how they made offerings to other gods and spirits.
They were never thought of as nor described as just-humans-but-immortal before modern Fantasy literature. It's akin to saying Nymphs in Greek Mythology were just immortal humans.

Pretty to look at, but most usually they are depicted as snooty humans who just so happen to live a long time or merely as the object of desire for the self insert protagonist. Rarely do they touch on how they only look like humans and as such do not think or act the way we do, for why would they? This is hard to pull off so I can't really blame them.

Keep Yourself Safe brain rotten coomer

Yeah, Danmachi elves are pretty good in comparison to the rest. They are at least walking nukes of arcane destruction. In general it does its races well, even just with playing them straight. But at the end day, most of its elves are again just potential candidates for the MCs harem.

Have only watched the anime, if there are more in the LN's that I'm missing, then excuse my post.
Ryuu, Lefiya and Eina are certainly harem candidates. Riveria is out, Filvis is for Lefiya.
I know, there are more less important and background elf characters, but that goes for any works.

That may be, but what else is there for "Japanese elves"?
How are sword world elves, to keep it /tg/?
Maybe video game elves from Japan are doing a bit better.

I am not familiar with games, I don't usually play JRPGs, don't own a PS so no unicorn overlord (that supposedly has elves I think), are there elves in dragon's dogma? Can't even remember, but races there were not exactly varied or explored by what I remember, don't know about the sequel. It's sad that one of the last hopes for elves from japan would have been being inserted in some from software game, but they're not interested in elves at all apparently.

              Anonymous

Unicorn Overlord actually really surprised me with its elves. Still a larger focus on female characters and then there is the entire dating aspect of it with two of the elfen leaders lusting after the MC (although not being the thirstiest of all female characters), and one half-elf character whose father of course was the human.
Then you actually enter the elf-realm and talk with the elves there. Their opinions about humans are varied and understandable. Some of them dislike them because they brought war and misery (the evil empire did that) and because they are still enslaving and raiding elf villages. Others have their opinions changed by the good actions of the main characters and his liberation forces and say that there are as many good and bad humans as there are good and bad elves. Others are outright thankful for the Liberations efforts.
Then you talk to the humans stationed there and it's actually funny how you get generic soldier girls lusting over elf guys, having elf boyfriends or Ser Ithilion being one of the few characters that actually marries in the epilogue, and it's his human girlfriend.

The elf units are fun and versatile, both Eltolinde and Rosalinde, their religions head priestesses being arcane powerhouses. They have this whole thing about being split physical-magic going on, which can lead to doing subpar damage until you optimize them. But the elfen fencers and archers are also great support units with many useful abilities and a versatile range of gear to equip. You can fit them almost anywhere and make them useful.

My argument and opinion comes by reading the light novel wich can be quite different compared to the anime. But what i love about danmachi is that the elves are both steriotypical(tolkien tier and average isekai slop elf(they just cumbawds)) and not so and at the end of the day they are just a different race living in a world where frankly the gods isekaid themselves there. Most of em have affinity for magic and while some can be "Made for human wiener" alot of em will go ultra instinct on anyone non elven that touches em case in point look at the difference between lefiya's village and the village where ryuu comes from. They are also obv not super long lived but long enough but they are still very beautiful to look at and are high in terms of being regarded and be good virtued.I can go on much longer but no outside of ryu wich their time together at being stuck at death's door and also her journey and life(her old familia captain words of holding on to whomever is able to freely touch you, bell is also just a genuinly good person at heart and great ontop of constantly getting his ass handed nonstop but keeps on growing and being well good. The story isnt a harem regardless of the typical anime harem bait its a story of bell wanting to grow alongside ais is why his special power came and is still there.
Best wishes and cheers its hard to be more specific without typing an entire novel of word salad.Take care and God bless.

Thanks for your post. But Bell certainly has something like a "harem", multiple female characters that are in some way romantically interested in him. Even if they aren't all tagging along with him as his personal female guard.

            Anonymous

Because the structure narrative is mythical that way Bell is a hero because he is one he is to me the superman of anime/manga/ln/wn not in terms of powers but of who he is and what he does people like and flock to him because in this dogshit city in a place where gods can see you deep inside and use you as their plaything and command you etc etc he goes beyond it.Its true in the earlier volumes he wanted a harem of his(due to his growth with zeus who is obv a horndog)but he quickly drops that after seeing ais and wanting to be strong alongside her and also to love and protect and nurture his family, his familia.
Yes eina loves him for he studies hard and grew thanks to her and takes heed and works and appreciates eina's job at making sure to minimize accidents and deaths or wrongdoings inside the dungeon and again bell is just fricking great and an icon at how fast he is growing in terms of prowess and fame(both good and infamous(xeno arc))hell she even got promoted due to bell lmao and sits with the big boys of the guild.Hestia again loves bell for bell but also because where everyone rejected her and shat on her and they where both alone they found eachother, haruhime is indeed okay with concubinemaxxing but she is also growing as a character and powerwise and even tho she was regarded as a prostitute only to be bound inside a soul gem and be forever shatterd and gone he risked going in what would look like Albania going to war againts America to take over the pentagon.
            Lily's story is especially heartwarming.
I can go on and on nonstop anon but while one can indeed say they all harem members or just tag along, its not about that they all grew and still grow and are in a much much better spot then they once where before bell met em,they owe him so much just like he owes them for being family and helping him across its arcs.
Obv it has its anime tropes but its anime and you gotta appease the brain rotten otakus to make a foot in and be big in order to start

I really don't understand why English has kept multiple different past-tense forms. The past-tense of write should be writed. It makes no sense at all to change a vowel in the middle of the word to an "o" to make it past-tense, rather than using the normal "ed" suffix.

            Anonymous

            The correct past tense of

            [...]
            should have writed it bigger

sentence would be "should have written it bigger" assuming we only want to correct the errors contained in the word "write" and not the other multitude of grammar frick ups in that sentence. The fact that that (I assume) brown monkey creature had the wherewithal to write "should have" instead of "should of" already puts him on par with your average zoomer.

        [...]
The art industry at large is stale. Look at what's coming out now. In the east, a bunch of mediocre stuff designed to sell models to coomers, with surface-level design differences being dictated by what is cool at the moment (like fantasy isekai now), other stuff includes adaptations from light novels that are almost always the same apart from the media it came from. Can't really blame them completely because the author wants to see his work published and the publisher wants that stuff to sell, so they play it safe. But this led to the anime market as it is now, self-referencing works that keep using the same ideas and characters, and the blame is in no small part on the fans that rise up if genre conventions are subverted. Everything has to be the same because the people buying want it to be like that. They're going to buy the figurine of Tsundere#2361 exactly because she's the same character with different hair.

In the west we've had a long release of reboots and sequels (some of them coming after decades), both movies and games. Most of them are crap that change things with no other reason than "bring them closer to modern audiences", and that either removes the charm, completely invalidates any message from the base source or flat out ruins the whole thing. That's without even mentioning the trend of pushing political and social issues. Again, the market is like that because everyone wants to play it safe, so they use the old name of a brand or series to push something different. Take God of War: a decent action game that tells the story of a father that wants to be left alone with his son, and explores the relationship between them. Can be cool, I won't deny that. But it's basically unrelated with the original apart from the protagonist's name. The curious thing in the west though is that people actually is not enjoying the trend, in general, but they keep churning out stuff in the same way, and lose a shitload of money in the process.

Dubs checked but cool strawman into GoW but I agree rehashing and reinventing the wheel has led to stale depictions.

The problem is the Japanese do not take modern Western fantasy seriously, 90% of modern fantasy in anime is in comedies.

I'd say it's more that Japanese are stale. They use the same set of tropes and play in the same sandboxes with different topics. That's why you can always immediately identify characters and behaviours, eg, tsundere. It's autism categorisation and probably linked to what

Oversexualized and clownishly exaggerated. But, most Japanese fiction is clownishly exaggerated, that's how it goes when a tradition-fixated culture's form of theatre is kabuki.

      says about kabuki.

nah, that's a cope from you.
Westerners are worse with their tropes, nowadays all their characters are written literally the same.

    90% trash and waifu bait

Dark elves always suck because they're actually never really 'dark' if they're actually in it
    >Except meshi for using it as a slang and because they actually have DARK elves
Fortunately I don't watch trash so my eyes remain unmolested by offensive material
If rather read Western books featuring elves, the only relatively interesting manga I've read was 'my slow life as an elf'
Which is technically isekai but it never focuses on it and like literally decades pass by in like a chapter
I think it captures the long-lived aspect really well

I think they tend to be more interesting since they are basically just old school Youkai/Fairies rather than Christian strawmen.

I like it. Japanese often manage to capture their otherwordly grace that's equal parts alluring and unnerving. Western depictions of demons are usually just Balrog clone #52371.

Anime demons are incredibly varied and are basically just a catch-all term for "main enemy fantasy race", like the Demons in Demon Slayer are not traditional demons at all, they're just vampires.

Frieren did it better than most by making them completely irredeemable. It shows them as almost human and they can mimic humans just enough to elicit empathy and even sympathy, but are utterly incapable of actually feeling those emotions themselves.

Aura's e-girl design really took me out of it. Haven't read the manga past the point where the anime ended yet but there's apparently a pretty good arc involving demons again so I'm keeping my expectations open.

In fact just about every western mythological creature is based on old descriptions given to them. It's why they still default to orcs as pig like instead of greenskins you see in western works, or kobolds as dogs instead of the midget lizards most westerners think of.

You're right, but they'll get hit with the same issues, guys like

      They are just sad.

would be mad that they aren't biblically accurate versions of seraphim or some Jodorowsky fever dream like pic related

The zeitgeist behind what the average joe considers an angel is bad to

Make angels reclusive immortal race content with praying and living a peaceful and humble live for thousands of years but get away with it because they're really powerful. In other words, the polar opposite of of innovation.

Angels are too servile and YES-SUH MAS-SUH towards humanity, they literally fill the same storytelling role as a magical Black. Plus their direct connection to God or Heaven forces them to be lameass bureaucrats with wings. They have the power to level cities and wipe out populations, sure, but they have to ask daddy's permission first.
Elves meanwhile are just Humanity+, which is way more interesting and leaves some room for interpretation.

What is the purpose of the elven race in a fantasy world, from a meta perspective?
Humans but better? Good guy race to balance out the existence of a bad guy race?

      >from a meta perspective?
      Depends on the setting
As an ancient race, they can be responsible for all the great, awesome and awful things happening in the past, leaving behind them elfen ruins to explore and plunder, with magical trinkets and amazing elfen weapons and spells in them. These ancient evils from past times? The elves sealed them away, but now some have slipped past… adventure ensues, where you have to meet with the elves to learn how to banish said evil. And other plot-relevant secrets of yore.
They can indeed be used as some kind of idealized humans to hold up a mirror to all the very human flaws, in some attempt to better ourselves and shape us in their image. But also possessing flaws grander and more terrifying than ordinary humans usually possess.
This can also be done in that elves aren't perfect, but they have simply done all the mistakes we are going to do and learned from it. So narratively, they can work as a race of mentors and teachers. But writers also like to use that position so that humans can one-up them and show them how to do it better anyway.
As the nature-loving race, they can for instance embody being in-tune with nature without being primitives or moronic barbarians, being able to smartly coexist with nature instead of shaping it to our advantage (and thus despoiling or corrupting it). Or go more feral while still maintaining a facade of civilization.
You can also go the TES route and make them philosophically and spiritually opposed to humanity, but that's more setting-specific. The advantage of using elves for that, instead of some monstrous or strange race, is that the superficial alikeness makes the rift appear deeper and more tragic.

Unattainability and conservatism. Elves are conceptually the beautiful perfect people. They are the image that everyone wants to strive for, until you meet them. Individual elves are fine, they will adapt and change with the group, but the larger the concentration of elves the more traditional and unbending they become.
Elves living for such a long time means that they are careful and their society is stagnant. Elves don't have much ambition because there's no positions to rise to. That's why individual elves travel around to try to find opportunity elsewhere.
Elves are basically China from history compared to the humans from Europe.

why are elves rarely depicted as a nomadic culture?

      Anonymous

Because Tolkien, despite his hatred of allegory, unintentionally made them an allegory for the Classical views of nobility. Something innately better than the common peasantry.
And authors since then tend to have elves represent a people who attained great heights and whos civilization has fallen from them. See: elves in Lord of the Rings compared to Silmarillion
But to keep the nob theme, they maintain their old world arrogance and stubbornly refuse to leave their ancestral lands.
And so hack writers are stuck copying Tolkien.
At least 40k managed to do it decently well with the Craftworlders roaming the stars trying to create new toeholds for their ancient civilization, all the while being such arrogant c**ts that their own homosexualry is their undoing.

It's funny that this moron hates female elves, when that was their traditional representation.

Some of the elves were thought to just seduce men to sleep with them.
Other ideas were that elves live among humans. They're just long-lived and fair.
Finnic mythologies consider elves as spirits that reside in everything. Trees, boulders, homes, even people. She was a (playful) being that would protect you and try to help you. She would communicate with you in indirect means like dreams or the wind blowing. Basically a fairy-pet from an MMO they picks up your loot.

Most of the time they fail with the theming and elves are aesthetics. It's like how they'll have a cat eared race. It's shallow.

There are exactly two anime that get elves right or at least make them interesting and both just came out this year. They're both exceptions.

Usually current anime fantasy is just "mmo" inspired settings, which keeps them shallow. Races in that are just cosmetic and aren't that different from each other. You can tell when instead they're inspired by DnD because elves are suddenly actually elves and not just a fetish bait thing like a girl in a bunny suit.

Anon has a point. Their 'totally not just a human with animal ears' have the most barebones explanation for why they exist and why they are inevitably endangered/oppressed/enslaved/hunted/all-of-the-above.

Some backstory would help justify their place in society and why they are like 90% just humans but animal ears.

And Dark Elves are there so that elves can have a flaw (racism) and there can be some brown beauties.
