The problem with Nexus alternatives is that they only host what Nexus won't. We need a real alternative that just gets everything. To do that, you would have to deal with scraping Nexus, and also the ensuing troonout (and potential legal issues). I don't expect to see this anytime soon.
The truth is that mod makers want their mods to be seen. Well, most of them do, anyway.
And as such, they'll flock to the most popular mod site available.
If your average mod dev has the choice of having your mod seen by hundreds of thousands of people vs. a few thousand, they're going to choose the former.
You'd have to offer something more with a new website than "We allow the blatantly racist mods"
There's GameBanana and Steam Workshop. But in all honesty I still haven't reached a point where there was something I wanted that was removed or unavailable to download. I'm not into sex mods like many of you though; so take that in mind.
I have no good reason to begin using another site. Nexus also hosts much of modding history straight from the tessource days

Nexus censors mods based on their political opinions.
That's not something a mod aggregator should be doing, and thinking it's not a big deal because their decisions so far aligned with your political views is a slippery slope.
It started with a flag replacement but we've already seen cases, where replacing male characters with female ones is allowed but the reverse is not.
I have been using Nexus at some point and even was paying for the sub when I was using it very actively.
However, I no longer feel comfortable supporting their service monetarily or otherwise.
Honestly, I feel disgusted by this petty power trip from someone who is so parasitic in their reliance on the content made by others while adding so little value themselves.
As far as I'm aware, Nexus made a shitty client no one uses and made everyone pay for their hosting by making unpaid downloads ridiculously slow.
I'd be happier if everyone used Steam Workshop but that's not a real solution either (even disregarding the fact many games simply do not implement the API) as it locks mods down to a single platform which is bad.
I had to stop modding because there are no real alternatives right now and I'm not touching Nexus.
At least some mods are self-hosted, which is nice.

Place has lax rules about content and moderation is sane, so it grows and get money and they invest in the site and it keeps growing, and monopolizes all the attention.
Then, once the site is firmly on top and all competitors are gone or don't have a chance of actually competing they start passing these censor and moderation heavy policies, plus user-hostile features
