Shadowbringers, But Endwalker finally got me to quit after playing since launch
Stormblood I was fine with but not super into. Shadowbringers I b***hed about endlessly but stayed stubbed and just played on patch week and took hiatus between major releases. I quit during Endwalker.
I liked the amount of different content Storm Blood added once they got to ShB and Ew they kinda stopped trying new things really. the only reason i even went back for EW was to see the end of the story. Was fun while it lasted now I need to find a new MMO once i clear up some single player shit.
They're adding a new type of content in the next patch though

They abandoned the ARR style because players want to wall to wall in a beeline to the end with no exploring. Most sprouts these days probably don't even have the map fully explored in the ARR dungeons. They will never know of "The hole" in Sastasha being a jail for sex slaves.
players want to wall because the dungeons themselves are uninteresting and unrewarding. Back in ARR when leveling took 5ever so the gear mattered more you could make an arguement for wanting to be in one but for many players they are just an obstacle between them and some tomestones that come from a meta thing, not even the dungeon itself. Plus jobs are increasingly designed around being current level cap so being synced down even to the leveling dungeons of current expansion feels weird.
With dungeon exp only given from bosses now, there's less reason to clear dungeons than ever.
I mean i get why they stream lined it but god it makes dungeons so boring they are all literally the same thing. Pull from one wall to the next then aoe and burn the boss for 100 dungeons ina row. As shit as some of the WoW dungeons can be at least they're a bit more involved than that. idk what mmo has truly great dungeons tho
Old style takes way longer to dev because you have to map out and place the assets in a maze structure. It's also stupid to design a map that you know won't be run the way you hope it would. If they forced players to go the whole round trip, players would complain about it being linear(they complained about this even when it wasnt a hallway btw). If you make it a corridor and arena design they can only b***h genuinely about the fights being too easy or (sweats and tards regardless will always complain about this). Deep Dungeons fill the exploration dungeon role now. Eureka also told the devs that nobody likes actuallying exploring in MMOs. Blame players, they dug this grave.

They're adding a new type of Savage dungeons. No Rez allowed and you have to clear the dungeon within a certain. Time limit or the mobs enrage.

Not that anon but I actually really appreciated ARR. It did it's best to make you "some adventurer" out and about. You had the echo but that was like being a mutant in Xmen or some shit. You're special, but not that special. Most of your questing and gameplay were sidequests, levelquests, and fates. They put in lore stuff like "Yeah, you slayed the summon but it's about to get resummoned so it makes sense that this other rando also slayed the same summon on a different day". The biggest issue was how slowly dripfed patch content was, they somehow made that shit worse than the leadup to Titan

So really you're complaining about the lack of good glamour options in the game, people wouldn't mod if they continued to release items like Coliseum Magic and Warrior sets, somehow we've gotten no upgrades to those since ARR.
Eventually every class is doing things between their global cooldowns so it gets quicker. But the game does take a long time dripfeeding those abilities. It's hundreds of ours before some jobs are actually functioning as intended, which is really fricking dumb for new players.

Final Fantasy as a brand has always had a high rate of female fans because it's got prettyboys and attracted a lot of emo and scene girls with kingdom hearts and the Disney overlap, plus most of the recent games tend to have a focus on convoluted melodrama and romantic subplots.

It never did. Been on since release and it's only continued to get better.
I still like it but I'm absolutely feeling what vets were saying about jobs being dumbed down back in SB when I started. I also don't like how older content is continously made easier and easier despite level syncing. I used to see wipes in roulette content often enough, or a boss that goes through all phases. Now you can sleep through every synced piece of content. I queue into mentor roulette just for the off-chance i get sprouts who queued up manually for Titan EX, but even that isn't fun anymore after they removed permadeath from all ringouts pre-3.3 content. I cannot deal with jobs and content simultaneously being dumbed down. Ideally neither is, and I can compromise if one is, but not both.
I also fricking hate that I should only be doing ultimates if I want enjoyable content at this point in the game. Yoshida is off his meds if he actually thinks saying "if you want to be challenged as a healer, do ultimate" and then DSR is able to be solo-healed.
Yeah, it only took me a couple of weeks to get over trying to play this game beyond just completing the MSQ. The content isn't there, the playerbase isn't there, the dev teams aren't there, and neither is the willingness.
It's just torturing yourself when you could just go play other games.

That's not what's happening. Up until about 2017 FFXIV was targeting a relatively "core" MMO playerbase and it was grindy and weird, but we liked it. Then they shifted to pandering to housemoms abandoning WoW and as a result changed the game into something that is no longer fun for players, but is accessible for tourists. It sucks.

Anatman MNK was possibly the worst iteration. 5.4 MNK was almost 1:1 SB MNK if you weren't doing TK rotation. Current MNK is as good as it will get overall while not being unintentional and I absolutely look forward to them ruining it again next patch because only WAR and BLM are allowed to stay consistently good and have any flaw immediately fixed due to being developer pet jobs.

Stance dnacing wasn't realt as much of a neat concept as it was. You just waited a few GCDs in defense mode, then went attack for the next 10 minutes. Plyaers noticed this pretty quickly and called it out so they made A3S require tanks and healers to dance if they wanted that MINE clear, but then the community shit itself because buttons are difficult (and also latency issues and ghost inputs were even worse then) so they went back to attack only mode

"Stance dancing" wasn't a thing, it never was.
You do a single combo in tank stance and then switch to damage stance for the rest of the fight. That's not "dancing", that's "here's this shitty chore I have to do because aggro in this game is a meme"
The only tank I can think of that had literally any reason to shift stances was WAR, since sometimes Inner Beast's tank cooldown and health regen was preferable to a Fell Cleave. WAR was also coincidentally the only tank that actually made use of the tank-stance system to change its own abilities. I don't recall DRK even getting anything for shifting between stances and PLD got an extra auto-attack and the only reliable gauge generation in DPS stance.
DRK had different stance stuff going on, you could technically use attack and defense mode at the same time and they did have abilities that were mutually exclusive to make you pop out of or into one or the other.
It's always been pretty mediocre. I'm still stunned that the fanbase has onions freakouts over the christian rock tier soundtrack.
If 'My Heart Will Go On' played during the credits the players would give it a standing ovation lmao.

DRG is fine, AST just needs draw/play and minor arcana/crown play combined to one button. I would also like minor arcana to be more impactful. If they give us the PVP card system, I'd be pleased as well. But we all know they're going to make the job WHM-tier braindead like every other "rework"

It gets worse as it goes along but not even (just) because of the direction of the game. It's the fact that they bank on old content being a part of your gameplay experience so you have more content, but also old content doesn't play the same because they prune low level skills to give you high level ones to keep you from having too many buttons. I absolutely adored going through Binding Coils back in the day, but despite it technically not changing and still being available. The same experience is not available and this is happening to so much content at this point that it feels like your "real" options for duties is actually getting smaller. They still incentivize these things to populate them though so if you want your relic in any reasonable timeframe you gotta go be level 50 and fight Xande everyday lmao
With Coils, they actually nerfed the encounters themselves.
Glad they stopped doing that, but I wish they would revert the changes they made to coils. It was some of the most fun raiding I've had when it released.

Honestly after ARR it felt like it's been going downhill but I love it so I keep returning anyway. I really miss the overwhelming amount of glamour options and the variety we got back then, we don't really seem to get much variety in glamour anymore. Despite it being 100x the size and more popular than ever we still barely get a single glamour item per patch and they're usually extremely bland. I feel like gear used to be a lot more impactful, I'm sure we were worse players but it felt like tanks really needed gear to tank things like Twintania without almost dying constantly, we got no tank loot for weeks and didn't have many weeks of tome gear at the time whereas now encounters feel like they're balanced around min ilvl gear. I feel like tanks used to actually have to fight for threat to a degree whereas now any pleb with a stance on will trivially have aggro for eternity on all adds. The trade off is obviously that fights have gotten a lot better (and harder) mechanically, I'm not complaining about that it's the main reason I still play. I also miss classes having significant class identity and synergy, they're really quite soulless now.

When I was doing story dungeons after the cutscenes, party was already gone with the tank doing wall to wall pulls and when I asked someone to explain the mechanics, they said I wasn’t paying their subs and not waste their time when they’re just trying to farm. I just wanted to not get lost in the story. That’s when I realized the fan base was shit and the whole “story driven” mmo thing only works if you’re a streamer with loads of people willing to duck your dick, ir if you have a dedicated group of people playing with you already. If you’re just a guy trying out this game people keep hyping up, it’s actually a pretty bad game. Here’s hoping they eventually let us start clearing early dungeons with NPC’s, becuase this whole “best fan base” shit, yeah, I don’t see it. If I wanted to a theme park dungeon experience, there’s loads of better mmos’s out there.
When I realized most people didn't want to learn fights and just wanted to follow YouTube guides. Learning how to fight bosses with strangers and friends is one of the only things theme park mmos do right. And the ffxiv player base fricked it up.
Now I just treat it like a single player game. I buy the expansions, I play through the base msq, do a little side stuff, and I do not resub until the next expansion. There's not enough stuff for xiv to be your main MMO so that belongs to Mabinogi

This reminds me when I joined a random PF for Leviathan Ex, back when it was the new hot shit. It was a real shitter group with a few French players even, I had no hope we would be able to clear this, but there was this one guy in the group who insisted we can do it. Eventually we ran out of time so he suggested to queue again. Figured someone will jump ship now. All of us queued again. We still couldn't clear but we got better and we all queued again. Then we had a really good attempt, everyone started to get hyped. Start to believe we can actually do it myself. Clear it the next attempt. Everyone was so happy, I was really glad I stayed, this and my very dramatic first Titan Hard clear back during 2.0 are one of my favorite memories.
4.0 but thankfully that stopped and banri got kicked off the (main) writing team

I just don't, and never did care for the story. It was very hamfisted, and quite predictable. I made it through heavensward because my friends played it, but stormblood, most of them quit, and so did I. They came back for shadowbringers, but I didn't, I just don't feel like playing anymore.
The community started souring around there too, when it started getting more popular.

seeing as the game's content grows with every expansion, we get new treasure maps every expansion, we've usually gotten new exploratory maps (diadem etc) every expansion, we get new mounts and minions and minigames every expansion, boss design has gotten more complicated every expansion, and the game has followed the same raiding mould since HW

I'm not sure how you relate this to WoW players. WoW's hardest content is harder than any pre-SB content by a mile. Also, Ultimates themselves are significantly harder than anything in ARR or Heavensward.

They can't, they have a mind and emotions and can influence surrounding dynamis but they can't actually use dynamis as a force; *using* dynamis is much different from *having an effect* on it. Dynamis is ill-defined on purpose but when Emet-Selch says they "couldn't have gotten this far with our methods" in Ultima Thule, he's being very literal in addition to metaphorical; assuming the ancients had a starship and got to Ultima Thule, they'd have been essentially powerless against Meteion and would have gotten choked out in the ship, like you did until Thancred stepped in. They wouldn't have been able to give Ultima Thule form by exerting their will over dynamis, so they wouldn't have even gotten as far as landing their starship and meeting the despairing dragons.

Do your combat rotation, and while you're doing your combat rotation, do the boss' dance. By fricking design, the fight won't take longer than 15 or so minutes, because it has a fricking enrage timer. Meanwhile, this is an MMO, not a single player action game or rhythm game, so the timings on things are often generous enough to make the movements you have to do plentiful and not really reliant on any kind of twitch reflexes. I would take the effort of learning a savage tier over the effort that takes to do the repetitive gathering and crafting tasks of pentamelding a crafter's set any time. What really makes it hurt is how you're depending on seven other c**ts for the fight bit, but at that point it's no longer a question of -your- effort, really.
That said, I do enjoy both.

The problem isn't that there is no other content, it's that 90% of it lacks replayabillity and/or is so dumbed down for the masses that unless you are clinically moronic, you won't find much joy in doing it.
With that said, both Criterion dungeons and (if they don't cripple it with no content) Personal Islands seems to be a BIG step in the right direction though.
The PvP revival was also a valiant first step, but Frontline is completely fricked balance wise and CC/Rival Wings does not have enough content on its own to carry PvP for more than a year at most, forget about the "battlepass" system they have with cosmetics, PvP will now live or die on how fast they can push out new maps/modes for it

Hasn't gotten bad yet. Quit middle of Heavensward because MMO's were never really my thing and I'd get bored quickly, but started again for ShB and EW and been moderately hooked since. Only caveat is I don't have a huge stake in these long term MMO's so I don't know about the casualizations and simplifications a lot of people continually reference, but just beyond leveling jobs there's been far more than enough to do with the occasional FF reference I can basedface and clap at.

I bounced off of the game 2 times before it sort of clicked for me. With that said, I have no idea why people sub for more than a month at a time/play the game between major patches since such large parts of the game lacks replayabillity.
I hope they double down on PvP in the coming year since that is the most fun I've had while replaying the same content over and over again in XIV, but it's still in DIRE need of more maps and modes. Criterion and islands also seems like they can be homeruns on that front but we will just have to wait and see

WM is the only decent proc in the game with a nice distinct sound effect and vibration when you're ready to let loose.
I never said BRD was great, but the fact that it has so many procs makes it VERY different from the current job design paradigm, that alone makes it atleast fun to play in short bursts when so many of the jobs have started feeling like they take more than one page from each others books
What's the current hpjob design paradigm? I have a lot of technical issues with jobs but aside from tanks and healers, the DPS role seems unique enough to me.

The DPS roles are the most varied, but both the healer and tank roles brings down the entire thing since they all feel almost exactly the same to play and make up a little less than half the jobs.
I'd argue that most of the melee cast feels very samey thanks to the "combo" system and how they've decided to give so many of them a dot to manage but removed a lot of the gimmicks they used to have and replaced them with bars to fill or timers to keep going instead

I won't pretend to be an oldgay, I only played it mid Shadowbringers and I played till Endwalker. All I know is that all the classes feel the same and PvE feels terrible to play. PvP is actually fun because all the classes feel different, but the game engine is still jank and chasing pixel dresses isn't enough to keep me around.
There's also the fact that the entire game is essentially a lobby game that pretends to be an MMO annoys the shit out of me too, but that's really an industry-wide problem at this point. No MMO wants to risk players being social because there's always the possibility for a sour experience, so instead every modern MMO is just shitty themepark trash where you don't even have to interact with another person for 99% of the content.
