>one of the least popular grass starters >one of the least popular fire starters
If it wasn't for greninja sticking out gen 6 would be the biggest flop among starter lineups. Gen 7 is where it actually got better, every starter there is popular.
If it is not painfully obvious to you that starter designs went downhill immediately starting with Gen 5, then you are a stupid zoomer who's blinded by nostalgia.
Gen 5 is good, but it’s also the first gen where I started boxing my starter as soon as possible. I never bothered evolving them until much later for the sake of Pokédex completion. Following games are not much better, as the previous anon said the amount of furhomosexualry in these ugly cereal box mascots is unreal.
gen 5 to gen 8 starters are completely forgettable, not one iconic fricking starter
thank fricking god they got a grip and made actual good starters in gen 9
Pokemon design in gen 5 was when the quality dipped, then it fell off the cliff with gen 7 and we're still falling. I don't think we're ever getting back up at this rate
>when did it all go so wrong?
They unironically peaked with Gen 1 and every gen after 2's colossal failure at replicating the Kanto trio's success has been dedicated to finding a new niche that brings the same level of roaring success.
> and every gen after 2's colossal failure at replicating the Kanto trio's success
Gen2 starters didnt “fail”. They were never allowed to shine in the first love became Game Freak and TPC were too stupid to know how to handle new Pokémon back then.
Is that why they made Typhlosion a carbon copy of Charizard with worse move options, made Meganium a mainly-defensive Pokemon in a game that despises grass types, and Feraligatr a physical attacker who primarily learns special moves?
>when did it all go so wrong?
Nothing? it's still the same thing >The shillmon, the unpopular choice and the one nobody gives a frick about gen 1
Charizard, venusaur and blastoise >The shillmon, the unpopular choice and the one nobody gives a frick about gen 9
Meowscarada, skeledirge and quaquaval
gen 1
>every single starter trio from the 3D games is dominated by disgusting furbait
XY, obviously. Thread can end here.
gen 5
then it got better again in gen 6

As with most things, Gen V.
Gen 5 and 8 are the worse so gen 5
1>3>4>2>>> 7>6>9>5>8
Gen 5, easily the worst and most forgettable
it's amazing how 13 years later gen 5 still has the worst starters by far and it's not even close
emboar and samurott are such astoundingly incompetent designs on so many levels that it's actually amazing
The law requires that I answer Gen 6
>Gen 1
3/3
>Gen 2
2/3
>Gen 3
3/3
>Gen 4
3/3
>Gen 5
0/3
>Gen 6
1/3
>Gen 7
1/3
>Gen 8
0/3
>Hisui
3/3
>Gen 9
0/3

Gen 5, Gen 6 is also ass too so somewhere around that time

Gen 5 for sure
gen 5 to gen 8 starters are completely forgettable, not one iconic fricking starter
thank fricking god they got a grip and made actual good starters in gen 9
Crazy how the Gen 8 starters are such a glaring eyesore. Ugly silhouettes, dull, bland colors, stupid jobmon themes.
Hoenn > Sinnoh = Alola > Kalos > Kanto > Johto > Hisui > Paldea > Unova > Galar
After Gen 5 (the worst), I only like Gen 6, half of Gen 7 and Gen 8 starters, Gen 9 starters have been pretty damn forgettable so far.
Gen 4
Pokemon design in gen 5 was when the quality dipped, then it fell off the cliff with gen 7 and we're still falling. I don't think we're ever getting back up at this rate
gen 5, gen 6, gen 8 and gen 9 are shit
and gen 7
decidueye and primarina are great designs
Gen 6 when is started the stupid Jobmon shit
gen 5*
gen 4*

Yes, they are all part of the larger symptom where half of the Gen 2 dex is unusable in their own games
Gen 5 really looks like the middle point between "stylized animal" and "dude on a fursuit" in this pic lol
