When did "pcmasterrace" start to love upsclaing?

For over a decade the pcmr mocked console players, because consoles were upscaling to higher resolutions. Yet nowadays almost all pc fanboys cannot stop talking about how much they love upscaling techniques. Why what changed?

    Checkerboarding and integer scaling is not quite the same as dlss. Even fsr sucks dude. I only give dlss a pass because it cleans up the crappy taa smear that plagues modern games.

      FSR3 is pretty good. Check how it looks in Avatar. DLSS still deals with aliasing a lot better, but FSR is getting there.

        I'm not the oldest pcgay here but I've been pc gaming since around 2013 when I built my hd 7870 build. I don't hate upscaling, but It did take a while for me to come around.

          Not him, but I've been on PC since 2001. I was completely against upscaling tech, but I've been using FSR 2 lately... it's on a case-by-case basis with me. I've seen one good implementation, one passable, and two horrific.

    DLSS isn't as perfect as native but its way closer to native than FSR is.
    In skilled hands, DLSS has no ghosting, no major artifacts visible to the naked eye, and no issues. In incompetent hands, it can have some ghosting (forza, cyberpunk 1.0).

      I turn it on even for most games just because of the more pleasant picture. Stranger of paradise went from being blurry to nice and sharp at 4k.

      I have never used DLSS nor have I ever had a need to. There are no worthwhile games to play that my GPU cannot run natively. DLSS is an nvidia marketing ploy and anyone harping on about it is a shill.

      Dlss 1.0 and the early 2 versions were a bit of a meme. It's gotten quite good now dude. The only technology that sucks right now is frame generation. But seeing how long it took for dlss to be good we'll see if nvidia can fix that one later.

        Sharpning isn't cranked to max by default anymore. Games like God of War have a sharpening slider so you can make DLSS look as blurry or as sharp as you want.

    Because the difference in the upscaling quality between checkerboards and DLSS is pretty severe. Checkerboards were so lame that consoles started using FSR instead, which is just a budget version of DLSS.

    DLSS and RT are both memes that will stop us ever having native 4k (or even just 1440p) gaming

    They're optional on PC and worth having around if needed.
    Console versions force it on and will always look like that in 1, 5, 10 years.

    Old school console upscaling is like taking a pencil and paper and trying to imitate a photo. DLSS is more like letting a robot scan the photo and redraw it on his own. Look up youtube comparisons of sony's old upscaling vs DLSS and the latter looks better, even back in the time when DLSS was still in the undercooked versions before 2.5.1

    DLSS, TSR, XeSS, FSR. These technologies pretty much "perfected" upscaling. Unless something revolutionary arrives, there's no point in discussing any other kind of technology, as they are all inferior.

        Lords of the fallen doesn't force you to use it, but I don't get 90 frames at 4k without it though. Tekken 8 doesn't even let you disable it, but like I said earlier. It doesn't look bad and it looks much sharper than my friends PS5 version. I wouldn't recommend dlss at anything lower than quality to be honest.

    same time they realized that the pc market had been flooded with braindead consoomers that will buy anything if you market it to them enough. I mean look at raytracing, it looks horrible and pcmr gays eat that shit up and buy the most overpriced graphics card they can get their hands on to run games at 1080p 30fps with raytracing. Also look back to the gpu price scalping with massively overpriced graphics cards selling at like 2.5x msrp and everyone just bought the cards anyway. Pc gamers should of gatekept harder.

      Technologically it's no more of a meme than pixel shaders or DX11. Things initially panned for tanking performance, later on accepted as the norm and blueprint for further technological advancement.
      Stylistically however RTX is a bit of a meme yes, because it makes developers automatically default to realistic mellow lighting which fricks with the art style preferences we have. People prefer more severe, dramatic lighting that clearly separates areas visually, ray traced lighting is a touch of realism that can feel boring if not done right.

    when morons started spending $799.99 $999.99 and they could barely crack 40 frames at 1440p and even worse frames at 4K with RT features enabled in new titles
    Since most of these nvidiots also probably bought into 1440p - 2160p resolution monitors they were forced to either play a lower framerate or lower their resolution to 1080p which looked terrible.
    DLSS is a crutch so that they could justify the pricing and lame performance.
