Japan Studio wasn't just making smaller, underperforming games.
They were responsible for fostering good relationships with Japanese 3rd parties (that's how Bloodborne came to be), helping small Japanese developers with publishing and even localisation for western markets.
All of that is gone now. All of them got fired. Those people went to Nintendo, MS, or started their own studios like Cloud Leopard Entertainment that localises games for all systems.
PS3 but I think the seeds were planted aa early as once GTA3 was a smash hit. It started their shift towards west.
The style of Playstation games at the start of the PS2 was drastically different to the end. And doomed most of Studios Japan's output to beciming PSP/Vita fodder.

When I learned that they actually listened to the loser in charge of Horizon when it came to Japan it really showed how fricking out of touch they were with reality.
The PS1 and PS2 were that great becauseo f japanese third party support but it had some good western titles too, i'd say that since the PS3 they started to pander hard to westerners with moviegames and the like and that's also when the industry collapsed in general, from that moment on the west controlled the industry and it shows since it keeps getting worse.
I think it's pretty much the opposite actually. Microsoft for instance is pushing japanese developers hard on gamepass. They have made big deals with sega and atlus for years to come exactly because they know those kind of games are very popular with western audiences.
That is only happening because the japanese game industry is pretty niche in these days and Sony isn't interested in it anymore, so its either up to Microsoft or Nintendo to offer them a place to release their games, though i don't expect Microsoft to have any meaningful japanese exclusives any time soon since they never had them.
The age of console exclusivity is pretty much over if the devs are free to choose, all games will be multi plat from now on. Pretty much any worthwhile japanese game will be multi plat unless Sony throws bags of money at them like they tend to do with new SE releases.

what does that have to do with forced console exclusivity coming to an end? It's not like Playstation exclusives are made specifically for the unique taste of playstation users or anything, the devs make the game they want to make and then Sony pays them to keep it off other platforms.

Dude, Sunset Overdrive had a net profit of $576 for Insomniac. It doesn't matter if you get 45M of revenue if the game costs 46M, AAA development is a money sink.
Even if Japan Studio's games were a "failure" in the sense that they didn't sell a shitton of copies I'm sure they got their money back and more, because they were cheap to make.

its more about return on investment. If you make a game for 100k and it makes 300k you didn't make a lot of money despite tripling your profit. AA games still take several years to make too.
But if you make SEVERAL games for a shitton of millions and NONE of them get the money back, you can't bank on just one of them to compensate for all the others, it's way riskier and the one that works has to work A LOT which is something that doesn't happen with Sony games.
The Last of Us 2 sold like shit, I'm sure Horizon (despite their inflated sales numbers because they gift the game) didn't get their money back, Spooderman 2 costed 3x what the first one did (they spent the money on hookers or something,because I can't understand where did it go)

They were responsible for fostering good relationships with Japanese 3rd parties (that's how Bloodborne came to be), helping small Japanese developers with publishing and even localisation for western markets.
All of that is gone now. All of them got fired. Those people went to Nintendo, MS, or started their own studios like Cloud Leopard Entertainment that localises games for all systems.
Pretty much, they were regularly credited for third party PS exclusives because they helped out.
That's what ExDev are responsible for now and are helping out with like Rise of the Ronin.

When I learned that they actually listened to the loser in charge of Horizon when it came to Japan it really showed how fricking out of touch they were with reality.
The PS1 and PS2 were that great becauseo f japanese third party support but it had some good western titles too, i'd say that since the PS3 they started to pander hard to westerners with moviegames and the like and that's also when the industry collapsed in general, from that moment on the west controlled the industry and it shows since it keeps getting worse.
I think it's pretty much the opposite actually. Microsoft for instance is pushing japanese developers hard on gamepass. They have made big deals with sega and atlus for years to come exactly because they know those kind of games are very popular with western audiences.
That is only happening because the japanese game industry is pretty niche in these days and Sony isn't interested in it anymore, so its either up to Microsoft or Nintendo to offer them a place to release their games, though i don't expect Microsoft to have any meaningful japanese exclusives any time soon since they never had them.
The age of console exclusivity is pretty much over if the devs are free to choose, all games will be multi plat from now on. Pretty much any worthwhile japanese game will be multi plat unless Sony throws bags of money at them like they tend to do with new SE releases.

what does that have to do with forced console exclusivity coming to an end? It's not like Playstation exclusives are made specifically for the unique taste of playstation users or anything, the devs make the game they want to make and then Sony pays them to keep it off other platforms.

Closing Japan studio was incredibly shortsighted because a lot of the development talent from Japan studio went to Nintendo and the production and executive talent went to Microsoft. Supportive roles most likely, like Tose. They use their expertise and knowledge to help develop games alongside their main studios and are a large part of their success.
Think Iwata and Earthbound/Pokemon Gold & Silver situation, but for overall game development.
It's similar to XDev only doing development support on stuff like LBP and Quantic Dream's PS3 games.
That said unlike XDev, Japan Studio also did do original shit like Ape Escape and LocoRoco. Team Ico and Team Asobi were also part of Japan Studio but had some level of autonomy afaik
