At the end of gen 6 when the third version and/or sequel for XY was scrapped so they can get a new game out just in time for the 20th anniversary of the franchise. People excused the rushed nature and lacking content of XY (thanks in no small part to the transition to 3d) with the hope of that the 3rd game(s) would fix everything, once reality hit all my hope for this franchise was gone. It was now a slave to the machine as the world's biggest IP.

Depends what you mean by ‘feel’. Gen 2 felt like a neutered and safe extension of Gen 1. Gen 3 felt like a reboot. Gen 4 felt like a clone of Gen 3. Gen 5 felt like a reboot again. et cetera. Every gen has a different “feel”, so it depends what you call “Pokemon”.

Gen 7 for me. Everything I enjoy about Pokemon was at an all-time low with those games.
Gen 8 was even worse, and somehow gen 9 has some nuggets of good in it and I enjoyed it. I'm into the open world stuff as long as they improve visuals/performance and put more interesting locations to explore.
I remember being a ferverant pokemon shill until USUM, i think gen 8 was the real pint of no return though.
in terms of story i really hate how the player charater turns into some chosen one and legends are the centerpiece to the plot instead of just being cool rare monsters that were optional, gen 3 was the start of this trend but i fricking hate gen 4 and them making pokemon gods
