yes, around here the fall of games began. There are still good games and i think vr is the shit, but i have no faith in trippel developers and i am so sick and tired of woke and women in video games.

say what you want, but women and feminism destroyed video games and the culture around it. i hate the whole nerd thing nowadays being some childish shit for fat losers that are into Rick and Morty and reddit. i don't want to associate with losers like that, and I am super nerd number 1 loving Warhammer, computers, roleplaying games and shit, but I ain't no fricking loser. Video games were cool when they were designed by and for adult men.

From around about 2009 onwards, corporate meddling and shareholder investment began to gain more and more influence over the design process.

Two major shifts happened from this point on:

        1) games started to switch to heavier monitization and in app purchases, as well as pay to win services and the mobile industry ramping up - get rich quick, low effort/production cost micro transaction/gambling games changed the market share rapidly

        2) remaining traditional games studios sold out to corporate investment and the original wave of passion developers responsible for the progress of gaming between 1990 and 2005 "cashed out". Corporate investment came with shareholder meddling, who all wanted in on the micro transaction gold rush. Later on (after occupy wall street), corporate investment money came with the requirement to insert to certain political ideologies. More of the old guard left due to this corruption, while only the sociopaths and politically aligned remained.

Relatable. I used to run a guild in WoW classic when I was like 14. Had literal engineers emailing me asking me for tips on how to tank better and gear properly; still have the emails.

WoW classic was pretty fun until they introduced double fricking XP.

But that entire experience was basically solo. No one was grouping, no one was running instances for fun or just chilling. It was all "quest to Max level" in solitude. It's joever. Middle age is here. And then death. Lord have mercy.

Remnant 2 is pretty gud though, as is Vermintide 2.

            AHAHAHHAAHAHahahahHAHAhahahaahaHAhahahah

Some private servers for the original late 90s-very early 2000s (pre-WoW) MMOs are okay, but they're small communities and can run the gamut from technically savvy historical archivers to truly sad disabled men who have nothing except a very old game in their life.

No one made an MMO after WoW worth playing. WoW itself was not my cup of tea, but its definitely the end of that genre.

The main difference is, before WoW, gold farming/botting/etc was very limited outside of Korean MMOs (Lineage, Mu, Ragnarok, etc)

After WoW, the secondary trade market was the "point" of the genre. If the game doesn't directly sell P2W features, it facilitates a secondary trade market and generates it's revenue through that.

As such, only private servers that enforce 1-boxing are even in the same universe that MMOs were originally intended to fill. All commercial games are money laundering operations with 20+ bots to human ratio at best.

I love games, I hate to hear you say that -- but yes, in it's current state, I agree with your decision. We desperately need platforms or laws to end microtransactions full stop. The medium is pretty much fricked until that happens.

the problem is the talent drain and the way it distracts the big publishers

while we do still get great games if you know where to look, the golden goose is the microtransaction live service games that prints billions per year

as long as that goose exists, it will eat up an inordinate amount of art, code, and design talent that should be making things that aren't garbage.

Many live services have flopped like suicide squad or skull and bones. There have actually been an insane excess of games released to the point it's impossible to feasibly play them all. Last of us devs scrapped the live service too.

Precisely the point, those teams were forced by the existence of the goose to pursue that model to failure. The risk:reward was deemed worth it by execs on behalf of Ubisoft shareholders, a public game company with a fiduciary duty to chase golden geese.

If MTX was illegal, they'd be making a new Rayman or something.

Unfortunately the only way to fix this sort of behavior is to figure out a way to make the shareholders who push this sort of self-destructive behavior to further their own greed go down with the ship when it inevitable destroys the company.

Yup, the occasional hotline miami every couple of years doesn't undo the paradigm. Can go back to like 1992-2001 and check the best selling games, and they're experientially something else.

As a kid I was doing tekken, deus ex, morrowind, syndicate, theme park, final fantasy tactics, 6/7, soul blade, doom, quake, jagged alliance, ridge racer / type I, wipeout / 2097, resident evil, fricking parappa the rapper, GTA OG, crash bandicoot, metal gear solid, diddykongracing, killer instinct, red alert 2, goldeneye, pilotwings, kulaworld, silent hill, splintercell, tonyhawks skate boarding, halo, diabolo ii:lod, unreal tournamentI could go on and on.

What is it now? Destiny, star citizen, aurora, GTA 6, some re-remade wow release? Id call it a joke how bad it got but it's not funny, an art form created by predominantly white and Japanese men with passion went extinct.

that shit costs as much as a fricking real life bridge to build. if it's anything short of a world-changing success, there will be absolutely no business case for making another billion dollar video game, probably ever.

                >What is it now?
There's a mod that upgrade the graphics and gameplay of X-Wing Alliance. It looks absolutely amazing and is pretty much the original but with more ship models and upgraded 21st century graphics and effects. There's a mod to convert the game into Tie Fighter, and while the upgraded XWA plays fine on my Windows 7 Machine, the Tie Fighter mod requires Windows 10 or better for some reason.
So now I'm actually considering getting a new gaming computer and saw an inexpensive one with like a 500 GB hard drive. That might hold three, maybe four modern games at one time. Bethesda's Nigs in Space requires 130 gigabytes FFS.

DS1 came out in 2011? So around then I guess.
Occasional indie stuff is good, but as far as major releases go that’s pretty much it.
      Halo3 was alright for 2007
And Skyrim (2012) is a nice mod platform to compete with New Vegas. However NV is still better crafted despite being unfinished.

PoE gets a special mention I guess, but the shear weight of the bloated mechanics in that game have it tail spiraling for the trash heap.

Are major title games released post 2019 even fun to play anymore? They look boring as hell.

      SO. same.

BioWare was already dead by this point and the writing was on the wall by the end of ME3.
In fact, most of the _improvements_ between ME1 and ME2 were simply ports of other shooter mechanics into the game. Upon review it becomes obvious that even BioWare didn’t understand what they had with ME1. It could have been a series to define its own genre a la Dark Souls and port KotOR gameplay into next gen gaming, but the ball was fumbled and the studio relaxed into fun but uncaptivating mechanics and storytelling.

Yes I am saying you should have known better. But you can at least still listen to old codex entries to get your lore fix.

ME2 had some early red flags, like the dragon age crossover shit. but yeah 3 was unforgivable. so much stupid shit. oh they built a giant deathstar weapon in about a week? its okay dudes, they found ancient alien schematics that make it easier to build, its simple....yet complex. like legos.

you get to the citadel where theres a 'refugee crisis', how topical, and theres like....5 people standing in a hallway. the hospital you go to isnt even full. oh but dont worry shepard we managed to get into a part of the citadel thats now so bad yet, so you dont get to see any of the chaos happening on the rest of the citadel that might have been interesting and offering some cool gameplay opportunities. like massacring refugees.
also ME2 has what, like 15 companions? all with totally original and unique interesting background and lore. I loved almost every character in ME2, even the shitty DLC ones like kasumi who is easily the worst one. ME3 had like 5 companions, 3 of which were recycled from old games, and 1 you dont even get till the end of the game. such an embarrassing shitshow. glad I pirated it

The first red flags weren't gay exclusive armours but rather "we're making it gritty and edgy", "for wider audiences" and the rest of the now typical list. I have followed the development at the forums and realized it's going to be nothing more than a mediocre cover shooter with alien poon. I have only played it once, despite it having some decent parts.

my life was spiraling out of control because i had no direction and had utterly failed to launch; I became an adult, and I was still just sitting there playing videogames. I imagined looking at myself through an outside perspective and seeing this man child loser just playing his bing bing wahoos while life was passing him by. then "life passing him by" turned into shirking responsibilities. shirking responsibilities turned into not being there for the people he loved. apathy turned into disgust, then sorrow, then anger

the man I saw was a man who had nothing, less than nothing even, with a whole world of potential and possibility dancing around him, and instead he chose to he a pathetic censorious tumour, a parasite on this world. never able to truly express himself through action, never able to truly love. never to truly live.

anyway , for a long time, whenever I tried to play videogames, I would see that man every time, and suddenly the magic was gone. the immersion gone. nothing really clicked at all when I could see that man out of the corner of my eye. everything just started to feel hollow. so hollow.

Relatable, except I just keep gooming. Is it fear? Is it self loathing? I tell my friends with kids who made it to never let them play vidya, or only very sparingly.

I slowed down on playing videogames, then my graphics card burned out and I couldn't afford to replace it anyway. I spent a couple years reading a boat load of literature instead, eventually I found the direction that was missing from my life this entire time. while this was all happening i could feel my health declining dramatically from my lifestyle. lots of sitting around, drinking alchohol, junk food etc. more and more social isolation over time as i started to feel worse and worse and couldn't keep up with other people. by 2020 i stopped seeing friends i previously saw weekly more than maybe once or twice a year. by 2023, not at all,

following new years of 2023 I had dramatically cut back on my alcohol consumption as even having a few beers was starting to have a catastrophic effect on me, and started working other bad habits like that, I was starting to work more and more hours and making more money than I have in my entire adult life, things were really looking up and i was genuinely so optimistic for a bit there

then a few months into 2023 everything came crashing down. the health problems i was experiencing kicked into overdrive. I randomly started having explosive watery diarrhea every single day for months at a time, heart palpitations, dizziness constant extreme fatigue, disorientation. this, I think combined with my years of social isolation, turned into EXTREME anxiety as i began to fear losing consciousness due to the debilitating physical symptoms, then began to fear the fear itself since my anxiety itself started making me feel woozy and stuff on its own. now anxiety and general disorientation is slowly turning into some kind of psychosis. im basically just waiting to become homeless and die now, or become actually schizophrenic

          Anonymous

Same thing happened to me. Anxiety was making me feel like I was about to die of a heart attack at any minute. Went to the doctor, got a clean bill of health and some happy pills which just made me feel even worse. Alcohol and being a shut in for long periods of time give you debilitating anxiety.

            Anonymous

the debilitating anxiety is from the dumb shit you do wile drunk, its also from alcohol itself. it hurts every cell in your body. do you think anxiety comes from nowhere? alcoholics cure anxiety with alcohol, then they wake up hungover and think they have done the worst thing in the world. have you ever met someone that became a good friend, then they do something moronic and shameful? ever seen yourself not give a frick about what they did or forget about it fast? dont give to much of a frick about shit you did drunk, they forget it easily aswell. if you are particularly sensitive to alcohol you need to know that it amplifies anxiety when you become sober again. if you said something stupid its not a big thing. you still shouldnt drink. it only hurts

Same. It the year after I graduated high school back in the Nintendo 64 era. Outside of a Call of Duty phase back in 2006ish, which was cool because I could play huge matches of 40 people with my sister in a neighboring state and my cousin in another neighboring state playing. That was fun as an adult and was novel at the time. But outside of that two or so years where we all played Call of Duty and Call of Duty 2, I haven't enjoyed video games since graduating high school 26 years ago.

gta5 is where it ended for me. A complete letdown in every way compared to its predecessor. Albeit, I did like that they reintroduced flyable planes, however the mechanics turned out to lack the soul needed to make them anything short of repetitive after a few minutes of flying.

When did video games officially die for you?

for me it was mass effect Andromeda

Online gaming died when Valve refused to clean out the cheaters in Counterstrike. Counterstrike made me a proto incel in 2001. I would rather play with my clan than get a girlfriend. And there were girls who would come play video games just to get married lol my friend married the one with a mustache.
There are too many cheaters now or the game is easily zerged by Chinamen. I had a blast playing RDR 2 online and it was better than any mmo I played and only like $5 for a playstation online fee. It is really a shame R* did not release Mexico for it.

R* mission timers balanced classes better than Blizzard or any other mmo developer has ever done. Also PVP was handled better than WoW with creating optional risk rewards. At it's core RDR 2 online was superior to the mmo, it just did not get the attention of GTA 5 online received. Every other argument for other games is its unbalanced and non sensical but magic fills in the rough spots while developers play favorites.

Even in the chambers with plenty white walls, the places you need to put your portals on have a differently tiled texture. It felt very scripted, and that's not to mention the actually scripted portals and very linear pathing.

MMORPGs being the largest offender in that regard. They rely on player activity for income but can't be assed to let a poor-gay sell his gold or sword. Naturally, the binding bandwagon lead to other bandwagons which is why I suspect it was the same team behind the scenes moving the gaming industry which is wrong because they didn't even play games.

GTA+ was the line for me. I don't play many titles. GTA was my jam. Now they've gone woke and greedy. I'm out. I can't imagine it gets any better from here. I'll probably see what's up with GTA6, but even then, I'll be waiting for reviews before I buy.

GTA6 has a budget north of 1 billion dollars. When marketing is added, it'll probably be closer to 2. There will be no negative reviews. They will buy every review from the biggest gaming portals down to 13 year olds on tik tok. No one will go unpaid. Now is the time to start a GTA fan channel and reach out to rockstar, get your contract sured up.

Final Fantasy IX. It was a massive letdown after the ABSOLUTE PERFECTION that was FF VIII. FF VIII was THE very pinnacle, the creamiest of the crops, the absolute of the mount Olympus, and the third in the official Holy Trinity of VI-VII-VIII (Ivalice is it's own thing, so FFT, Vagrant Story, and FF XII are counted separately). Things never got better since after FF VIII, as FF VIII was the highest point not just of the franchise in general, but Square as the developer and company in overall, so when they reached that point, they could only fall down from there (and boy-oh-boy falling down they did, starting with FF IX, which was a very big disappointment and complete mistake on each and every accord and field imaginable), with corridor intestine and boring-ass non-story that was FF X, then Fecal Fartassy X-2, and other crap after that.

And FF IX marked a downturn and falling down the hill not just for Square and SquE, but the industry as a whole, as Fart Cry released next, which solidified the beginning of the "dark ages" period of the entire video gaming industry's and gaming commune's existence. We are still suffering in these dark ages even today, despite SquE itself being able to crawl out back from the shithole it gotten itself into recently, with Star Ocean SS HDR and "FF VII-2 Disc 2: Rebirth".

Discarded. Seethe, cope, and dilate, shiteater. FF IX is not the worst video game or the worst FF entry ever, but it's genuinely the direct point at which Square lost it's touch with reality and gaming commune, it is the point of the beginning of the dark ages for the whole industry.

You're insane. I can understand preferring ffVIII over IX, but IX is an objectively good, and in fact better game.

Mechanically, IX worked so much better, with superior mini games, a better character system (junction system was fricky), and plenty of small little improvements like the ATS or whatever it was called.

The characters were far more fleshed out, even if they were more cartoony. Looking back the FFVIII characters were ok at times, but we're as blank as their character sheet. Even the main villain is just utterly forgettable. You compare that to IX, which had a cast of interesting characters, with great interactions, and importantly growth.

In a very objective sense, IX was one of the best.

I'm a big fan of fighting games to the point where I was involved in tournaments but now I can't bring myself to play anything, even with all the new releases recently. With the Wii. I have NO desire to jump around like a fricking monkey in order to play games. I'm playing video games because I DON'T want to go outside or exercise.

After Nintendo decided to create that moronic console I went to Xbox. There were a few good games on there but I just want to sit down and play a fricking game. I don't want to have to spend an hour watching cut scenes about the characters. I DON'T CARE why my character has to fight the aliens. I don't care about his fricking childhood. I just want to have some fun. I also don't want to have to memorize a bunch of moronic combos.

Modern games are fricking exhausting. It takes a fricking hour to go through a moronic tutorial so you can learn the controls while you're constantly interrupted by cut scenes. At the end of the hour I'm out of time and by the time I come back to the game a few weeks/months later I've forgotten the controls and have to do the tutorial again.

I miss the good old days when you could fire up a game and start playing in 30 seconds. No cut scenes, no tutorials, no memorizing combos and controls, and NO FRICKING UPDATES! Games aren't fun anymore.

I noticed the cracks started showing really bad during the PS2 era. Journalists were openly shitting on japanese games for being "too gamey" and not focusing on story. There was a major market shit away from fun action titles and on to cinematic slop.
And the ps2 library was filling up with western garbage, lots of it licensed.

I think the final nail in the coffin was 2007 when uncharted came out, and everyone who up to that point hated video games, lost their minds and instantly started playing games because "bro it's just like playing a movie".

These days i mostly emulate, on a CRT at the original resolution. Stuff from generations 3 to 6 inclusive. I have a modded ps4 and switch so i can dip my toe into the water of modern stuff now and then, but most of it is tiresome, insipid, and trying way too hard to be retro while missing the point of what made those games so special in the first place.

being social is a big game of one-upmanship and a limited hangout club, a crab-in-the-bucket, stab-each-other-in-the-back social ladder-climbing game, where alphas control the quality of what goes down, and betas are their regulatory goons who keep you in "your lane". betas are more than happy to get leftover scraps from chad and are even more vicious at boxing you out of access to pussy. betas will conspire on some woman shit to frick you over, chad just does it naturally. acting out of line or being unique is punished with more ostracization (even more than was already there if you are a freak like me)

being a loser like me who started to understand and get a little success of how to act only attracts bigger fish to snipe what little prey you manage to catch

being social should be fun, but it is another paranoia-inducing animal competition, and i am a failed organism. the point of ALL social activity is the securing of pussy, and it a very tight market

I had 2 stages of gaming in my life:
The kid stage long ago (C64, NES)

The adult stage after I saw a game movie (God of War I) and thought:
Wait? This is what games look like today?

Skyrim was pretty much peak for me, everything was there, the game, the memes, the jokes.

Since then I could not really find another hour-hog like that, Witcher 3 - more realistic but linear, Red Dead Redemption - pretty much the same, Bioshock - Shooters are just too boring, ...

I prefer to unwind with some F-Zero on SNES emulator.

I have a confession. I never played mass effect 3 or Andromed's story mode. I only played the multiplayer....and I loved it. I really felt like I was nearly alone out there. All by myself against hordes of aliens. I loved it. I had a Ghostbusting laser gun and a harpoon gun. Noone knew how to use it and I could just see people seething in game as I racked up.

I know it was uninspired dogshit. I know the player counts, etc. But goddamn, how I loved that game mode.

no it was very different from any other multuplayer iv seen besides maybe nazi zombies in cod (but not even close). it was a team of up to 4 players surviveing waves of enemys while trying to complete objectives. it was fun because their was like 60 charecters to level up (and you can prestige) and just as many guns to unlock (and then they can also be leveled up). the harder difficulty's were very rewarding but actually very hard you needed people who knew what they were doing to pull them off.

Five year process. 2013's BioShock Infinite killed the notion of hype for me in a way that it never returned. ("hype" as is in "a game's release is an important future date to look forward to". Following news and trailers, reading threads on Ganker and the like, taking time off work to play it on release day, etc.) 2018's God of War, although I didn't play it until 2020, killed the idea of gaming for me permanently. (as in, "thinking of gaming as a special sub-culture I'm a part of" now it's clearly mainstream to the point that games "are just a thing that exist" for me)

I have some hope for the indie industry. AAA is done for.
