NTA but I think SMT is just great for being a game you can just pick up and play. There's no lengthy tutorial or movies playing every 5 steps. It gives you just enough to put things in context and let's you figure it out for yourself. That and very strong fundamentals.

When I started to play SRPGs
Currently playing P5R. Thought I'd play through on the hardest difficulty (hard); I foolishly obtained the DLC content which included far too many things. The OP personas were easy to avoid, as was the equipment. Items were a bit iffy but I largely managed to avoid them (did make use of the lockpicks however). The first palace was actually enjoyable--albeit too long--because I really had to consider every fight, making sure I have enough resources to get to the end of the palace within a day.
Second palace was were I completely gave up on the gameplay. Fought the red shadow that took no melee or gun damage, before finding the nuke accessory was a massive pain as the enemy one-shot my party and I had to use SP if I wanted to damage it. What make me quit however, was a random encounted that used an elemental aoe to hit a weakness, getting another turn to use another different elemental aoe to hit another weakness, followed up by a third aoe that either killed my party or were low enough that I couldn't run away. It was so stupid. Changed straight to safe difficulty and started spamming the DLC persona each and every fight. The gameplay is just terrible.
I get that the persona fusing system is carried over from SMT but it adds very little substance to the game, outside of providing some--limited--character for the enemies.

It wasn't though, that's the problem. Normal enemy encounters were completely trivial, only the red shadows were somewhat threatening but even they made more managable if you reduce their attack. For the enemy I fought I could just change a party member to avoid the elemental weakness but I wasn't having fun with the gameplay so I dropped the difficulty, rather than the game.
I'm still playing it though. I most certainly did get filtered by the gameplay however, yes.
