DQ11 is one of the coziest games ever created. And yeah play on Draconian mode: less xp and harder monsters if your finding the game play to be too easy. Although be warned the early game and start of chapter 2 can be pretty bs at times because you have restricted options for a bit.

I thought it started slow. I had to get into the groove. I think I might have even started the demo, and then completed V before I returned.
It starts narratively traditional, and though it sticks with it, it subverts it sometimed.
I set speed to max, put the hero on follow orders, and everyone else to show no mercy. For boss fights I switched to follow orders.
Don't ignore the sode quests, some of them are actually kinda cute.
Don't grind. The game scales beautifully, and really, being under-levelled always just resulted in better battles anyway.
I didn't like the orchestral music. It was too much all the time. The midi stuff was a lot calmer.
Use Japanese audio. God the english voices are trash.
Mix and match your party members. No reason to always have the luminary in your party.
