How many fights in Sekiro had a clear second phase? I don't mean that they have 3 health pips and get a couple more moves the further into the fight you go. Isshin, Genichiro, and the ape are the only ones I can remember that did, which makes the ape scene especially effective

A boss that isn't just a self contained challenge, but a final skillcheck for the game as a whole, making him the perfect final boss.

I like Genichiro showing up there, killing him in half a minute as a warm-up really impresses on you how far you've come since when you first fought him. Assuming you struggled with him on the first encounter, anyways.

2nd phase being a bit slow because you need to counter certain attacks with certain assists aside, he's head and shoulders above most final bosses from these kinds of action games. Great buildup, great framing, great music on either mode, the only boss that make you parry things on the off-beat, and a bunch of little touches (The 808 distraction super doing nothing as a unique voice clip of "Did you think that would work? I'm a dog person." plays). Not as excellent as either final Vergil fight or as memorable as Armstrong, but only a tier below them.

Every Kirby final boss since Magolor has been top tier. Star Dream is probably my favorite.

Basically the last sp game I played.
Sure, there are more bosses in the DLC which I am going through now, but this was a pretty satisfying boss to the main game story overall

      Also great recent picks.

        Anonymous

That said, pic related IS on the same tier as the best in the genre, if you include the two phases (on the beach as any Autobot, in orbit as Optimus) as one fight. A true mechanical test of skill against a boss with a massive movepool, followed by a more straight-forward brawl in space with one of the best Optimus/Megatron interactions Cullen & Welker ever recorded, debating over the validity of human life while punching each other. Absolutely 10/10 final boss.

          >Down, down!' he gasped, clutching his hand to his breast, so that beneath the cover of his leather shirt he clasped the Ring. 'Down you creeping thing, and out of my path! Your time is at an end. You cannot betray me or slay me now.'
          >Then suddenly, as before under the eaves of the Emyn Muil, Sam saw these two rivals with other vision. A crouching shape, ... a creature now wholly ruined and defeated, yet filled with a hideous lust and rage; and before it stood stern, untouchable now by pity, a figure robed in white, but at its breast it held a wheel of fire. Out of the fire there spoke a commanding voice.
          >'Begone, and trouble me no more! If you touch me ever again, you shall be cast yourself into the Fire of Doom
Frodo takes ownership of the ring and, using its power, declares a prophecy that will ultimately destroy it (thanks, perhaps, to a little divine intervention).

That would actually be godlike if done right. I'd do it in reverse order so you fight the final boss and make him as punishing as possible to force the player to burn up their resources then you fight a dual mini-boss immediately afterward and then you finish the game having to slaughterfrick the basic enemies when you're absolutely depleted.

Primordial Malzeno was fantastic, despite Rise itself being pretty crappy, it's one of the few monsters in modern MH that can actually keep up with the player in what feels like a fair and extremely rewarding fight instead of just flinging AOEs everywhere or relying on one-hits and gimmicks

There have been some in the past few years. All of AC6's final bosses are great. Isshin from Sekiro is just one of the best final bosses of all time. The final boss from Hi-Fi Rush was excellent and also like Armstrong in the way that he's a lot harder than literally anything else in the game. I also think Baldur's Gate 3's final boss was really cool, fighting on top of the Nether Brain is a great setpiece and on Honor mode its actually quite challenging.

Primordial Malzeno is also definetly on the list, quickly became one of my favorite Elder Dragons in the series. He's just so cool, his moveset is super interesting and he's hard without feeling obnoxious like fricking Crimson Glow Valstrax

      Anonymous

      Primordial was really well done
As far as final bosses go though I'm disappointed that Shara and Gaismagorm never got a harder version even with all the boosted monsters getting thrown around in Iceborne and Sunbreak's endgames
They did a really good job on Alatreon and Fatalis too, Amatsu was kinda whatever but I never liked him much.

        Anonymous

At least Shara was a decent fight in its own right. Gaismagorm felt like a big spectacle with not much substance behind it. Just throwing out individual slow heavy moves. It really needed a hazard quest where it starts off in phase 3 right away

It legitimately blows my mind that "make the final boss the best experience of the game" isn't somehow accepted as basic game design 101. This is the climax and ending of your video game, arguably the most important part, and yet so developers just frickin' whiff it. How?

I'm pretty certain a lot of those statistics are skewed by people who pick up games and never end up playing them, or drop them after the first level. And there's no point in designing games for people who don't play them; you might as well make paintings for the blind.

This is part of it. Also at the end of the long journey some people just get fatigued and want to be over with it especially in a game where you can't backtrack or grind up or anything. They just get mad and quit.

My issue is that it's so frequently the second last boss that's the best one. Turns out fighting the dude who's a lot like yourself is always more fun than fighting the big ugly mindless monster that punches the stage and has no character. Armstrong honestly almost falls into this but he's just so fun that it works out.

The second son of miracle was nowhere near as hard as Eviterno, but he's the prettiest fight in the game. He perfectly embodies the game's "holy yet twisted and grotesque" aesthetic. It's a shame because he only knows three attacks that while they do a ton of damage, are relatively easy to dodge. Eviterno was far more engaging of a fight where you had actually had to be fast to evade him.

this so much, nyx was one of my fav SMT bossfights and it got absolutely ruined, only one turn instead of the usual 2 for bosses is a joke, and theurgies + characteristics make your party absolutely OP. fuuka makes it so when your weakness is hit you just recieve normal damage, and some party members have a shitload of crit now, or buffs effects are stronger or can use debilitate or basically can spam heals for free...
and yeah of course, theurgies one shot his phases. you deal too much damage compared to the og game and he has the same health

Not counting the secret boss/es, but I really like the final boss of Furi. The boss before it basically requiring you to just be perfect is a great actual final challenge compared to it though.

honestly what makes the senator armstrong fight for me is that brief moment he thinks he's getting through to jack, picks him up and brushes him off patting his shoulder. it wasn't a "hahaa i win!" moment but a "finally you understand, there's no reason for us to fight!"

just seeing a boss behave in that way is so surreal and unique that it cements that moment in your brain for eternity

    >Over three phases
Is anybody else absolutely sick of multi-phase bossfights? It's fine once in a while as a surprise, but these days it's every single boss every single time. Especially the soulslike games.

      Anonymous

No, it is you. Multiphase bosses are used not only for "surprise, is it not even my final form, and you already have spent all your healing items", but also for artistic presentation of a boss as a character, unveiling him in parts, revealing his connections to other characters and parts of the game, allowing player to see boss' true personality and motivations, showcase his downfall, moving on his story right during bossfight. Look at Rabi-Ribi main part of the plot final boss.

Look at Lies of P, where almost every single boss gets an entire second phase but almost none of them have any of that "character" shit. It's just tiring, and makes it so the ones that would be interesting no longer stand out at all.

Hadn't played LoP, but right now i have checked randomly several biss fights (parade master, white lady, two bossfights, that, i suppose, are only a minibosses - clown puppet and puppet of the future, puppet eating something, and Laxasia the Complete), and so far i have seen second forms only on parade master (which should show you, that puppets are inhuman machines, because, while resembling human visually originally, he just tears off his head to use it as a club, and Laxasia being prime example of unveiling boss fight i have mentioned in my post about Rabi-Ribi. Maybe there was some additional movements on single-phase bossfights (i haven't noticed them during watching video), but that would not even be comsidered a phase-changing, that is just one-two addotional moves.

The Parade Master is the first boss in the game, and it still has a phase 2 as you pointed out. The clown and puppet of the future are minibosses at best, the white lady is an npc battle. Laxasia does have a full phase 2 with a cutscene transition, as does the green monster/puppet devouring monster (same fight). Reposting because I skimmed over you mentioning those two.

Lies of P has 7 bosses with full cutscenes and a completely fresh lifebar in between phases. The first 3 bosses of the game do things like what you saw with the parade master. There's also a gank squad you fight twice and a repeat of the parade master which starts in phase 2, those are the only fights with no transitions.

Has checked on bosses slightly more thoroughly (uses this video).
Well, Archbishop shows madness of petrification disease through masked face after unmasking being a hole full of shards. King of Puppets unveils to us, that other Pinocchios exist. Champion Victor is Bane the Batman Backbreaker, so far first boss with next phase looking like purely powerup, maybe pumping himself full of venom have some plot consequences.
Yes, hadn't noticed green monster being first phase, my bad. This one might me second phase for the sake of second phase. Corrupted parade master is, technically, a third phase or a miniboss, and it shows us corruption on puppets. Simon Manus shows us "evolution" and his own insanity, this time more intended and completed over archbishop's. Rest of them are either minibosses or "NPC" bosses with no second phase. Almost every of them is heavily plot-related except for puppet eater, so far i can only consider your complaint as a complaint about overusage of multiphasing, but not as "multiphasing doesn't do anything but second phase".

It wasn't mindblowing, but I really enjoyed the final boss in a little indie game called Power of Ten. Mostly because of the godlike soundtrack (first time in my life that I bought an OST of my own accord). It should be impressive. Powerful, most powerful thing left to defeat. Heavily plot-related. Preferably have a mind and a reason to fight the character (you). Preferably either being honourable or be at this level of power, where only honour is not to hold itself against worthy opponent. Majority of best bossfights in modern japanese games are against human enemy - mgs4, mgr, mgs3, Devil May Cry 3, Demon Souls, Dark Souls 1, Killer is Dead, No More Heroes and so on.
Non-human final bosses require proper and unique treatment like Drakengard 3.
Of course, game director is directly responsible for proper scene - music, dialogue, boss visuals and movements - everything should show you, that here is your true enemy - everything before was just obstacles, tutorial, tests, way for you(r character) to reach peak potential to finally become equal to the final boss, which is an ultimate challenge for you(r character) personally.
tl;dr: good director, who understands, how to prepare player through the for being able to percept climax emotionally, make climax both relatable just enough, so player would start relating to it and therefore be hooked into events emotionally, and how and what crank up to eleven to instantly rev up slightly hooked player to the max, so contrast between passive tension will kick in right from the beginning, AND THEN WILL KICK IN AGAIN by revealing a thing tenfold more impressive, that player has just seen. Adding fighting giant demon/mecha/alien right before true bossfight helps a lot, as player has just got an impression, that this giant thing was the classic Big Bad, but suddenly there is more. And this more is way, WAY more impressive, than a giant fricking demonic robot from space.

I love that along with consistently having an absolutely incredible final boss, modern Kirby games additionally always have a cool new secret phase for that boss at the end of the hardest boss rush, usually replacing the finishing move QTE.

I guess the Mega Man Zero series is very old now. But it's a good example as any.
I can't play the fourth game in the series. I tried. I tried playing the fourth game a few times, and I just can't get into it. Is he fourth game bad? No. Not at all. But the third game's final boss was such a peak ending, that it feels wrong to continue the story beyond it. I ask myself, why am I playing the 4th game, when the 3rd game is the true end? There's just no topping it.

Admittedly I only played through the game once, so I didn't do any of the unlockable difficulties, but I found that fight particularly obnoxious. I think I spent more time waiting around than actually fighting, and having to fully drain Id's healthbar 3 times left me wondering when the hell is this shit going to end. I don't think he even did anything different each time, it was just a timewaster with a false sense of progress.

Since Legend of Dragoon doesn't really allow a first time player to grind out experience, what I got was a knock-down drag-out fight that lasted 45 minutes, like 5 phases, used all of my consumables, and came down to the final phase with only Meru alive. Went for the hail mary basic attack and won only to have my game freeze as soon as the final FMV started.

Very memorable, very climactic final boss that pushes a first time player while pumping the breaks enough to allow their half-assed additions and non-Legend's Casque armor to pull them through with good timings.

Not to mention that final point-of-no-return moment where the field background turns from a calming blue to an intense red while Dart tells the party, and you, that this is definitely the final boss, and to only move forward when you're ready.
The final walk up or approach to the final boss is as important as the boss itself. You need that moment to set a mood, to strike fear into the player, and to make them wonder if there is actually a realistic chance they will lose because of how imposing what they see ahead of them is.

        Hell yea special stage
It's a hard motherfricker of a game but you can't help but run the races over and over until you win with that eurobeat blaring.
Shame SEGA doesn't feel like making another proper release of it.

Golden Deer was the last of the 4 routes i ended up playing and i had no idea i would actually fight that guy.

This plus the true final boss after you go through the final fight gauntlet is peak videogames, the threat of your save file getting deleted if you lose (which will probably happen at least once) is ludonarrative harmony of the highest order

I don't even like shmups. I've bought dozens of them for like 5 dollars each on sale and have less than 2 hours on all of them. I have 50 hours in ZeroRanger. There's just something about this game, it's perfect. The final boss is amazing every time.

Basically the last sp game I played.
Sure, there are more bosses in the DLC which I am going through now, but this was a pretty satisfying boss to the main game story overall

    >ctrl+F

It’s fricking amazing. You fight him as the penultimate boss, then they make you fight him AGAIN as the final boss and it’s just the same fight with a better song and he has 3x as many moves

    >Boss has the same moveset as the player
    >On the last phase, he regains HP and both the boss and the player strike a pose before throwing down for real.

Wario Land Shake It was kino of the highest order.

City & Origins did. Asylum & Knight though, holy frick no, and I love those games otherwise. The Deadshot boss is pretty much the main reason to play Origins.

The Deathstroke fight in Origins is shit
        Yes, you're all wrong
We could have gotten one of those martial arts enemies with a bigger health bar as a Deathstroke boss but we ended up with a QTEfest, don't let the first 4 seconds of the fight fool you, that frickin fight is a QTEfest.

I mean, I know he is not hard, but for a zelda game, he actualy put a good fight for once, when this motherfricker perfect dodged me my jaw dropped, and I was scared for a moment of the possibility of him fricking flurry rushing me, too bad they didn't had the balls to make him do that.

3D Zelda boss fights have always been piss easy and cinematic, OoT had the worst final boss fight of any zelda game. Totk is the only time they had a final boss that wasn't a complete snoozefest, and you could still easily outclass him through armor and hearts to make him too easy. Sad, but its the best 3D has ever done.
      >His attacks are gloom 2.0 and fully remove your heart containers, meaning its impossible for you to heal from any of his damage
Kino mechanic, shame having level 4 armor makes it such a non-factor.

Not last time but imo still one of most memorable boss battles.
    >Its a boss battle of the third trillogy
    >You face your nemesis you fought with over entire trilogy.
    >This is the final battle
    >The place of clash is also place where 2 divine beings are fighting each other forcing you to avoiding their devastating powers while facing your nemesis.
    >And as cherry on top a great music.

Might and magic 6 didn't have a boss, but rather the biggest and most deadly maze of the game filled with the toughest enemies in huge numbers
Trying to explore the thing is a waste, just get to the center and suicide bomb the aliens before you're inevitably overwhelmed

It's kind of odd, Armstrong isn't even that interesting of a fight. It's really carried by the music, as most of the fight is dodging behind him and hitting his weak point.

      Anonymous

It's carried by his character, then the music. It's difficult to make a fight as tight as Vergil 3 for that kind of game, when you think about it.

That's a fricking lie, homie. It's a twist villain, no one expected the goofy ass senator from that one cutscene to asspull a metal gear, power up with nanomachines of all things, pull a might makes right speech to Raiden and end the way it fricking ends. The music is hype but the fricking wild ride it is carries all of the phases.

The first one. Especially if by that point you've both used up all your super special video game powers and it's a bare knuckle brawl to the death.

Tekken 8 pulled this off despite it trying to rein in the dumb shit 6&7 did and introducing new dumb shit of its own (taking the Hollow Ichigo shit from bleach and having that result in Jin & Kazuya having a fight in suped up Devil & Angel forms like it's DMC5's final boss after they were blown into the atmosphere from an island like the end of JoJo Part 2). After all that they have the sense to make you fight Kazuya for like 5 straight rounds as Jin consolidates all of his fighting influences into one style again to beat Kazuya to death with no Devil Gene bullshit involved. It's awesome.
