Nowadays, I beat every level, at least in the first couple of worlds. After all, beating levels properly gives you a card, and I can usually make it so I get stars every time, which gives me a ton of lives. It's not uncommon for me to end World 2 with around 50 lives for this reason.

Never, because even if I don't use the whistles, I still make it a point to grab them.

This is something I noticed about myself..especially since I play the SNES version, knowing flutes are rare items, I hoard them. As a kid I didn't know about the 2 in World 1, only the one at the end of World 2.
But I kinda miss beating 1-3 normally, or fighting boom boom and seeing the later half of the fortress.
Anyway, once I get a lot of flute stock, I can go back to World 1 and play these levels normally if I want, I just realized I compulsively go for the secret every time.

I always forget that you can not only choose what world to start in on the SNES version, but that it also saves the items you've collected, so you can farm the high-end items and play through the game from the beginning with P-Wings and Hammer Suits and shit. I ought to do that one of these days.

I thought everybody knew about the whistle in the first fortress. It was literally shown in that Nintendo ad movie starring Fred Savage. A lot of people didn't see the wizard, but word got around back then even without the internet.

This was the easiest to find without any help at all imo.

It's the only one without a hint as to where to find it, though. IIRC both the 1-3 and World 2 whistles are hinted at by the princess, but the World 1 fortress isn't.

I never do. Even if I wanted a warp whistle there's still 2 more available after that level and I want that star card more.

I beat the Japanese version a couple of years ago with no warps just for fun and it was great.

Couple weeks ago, my nephew got a thing on his switch that lets you play old games so we were playing this together.

A few years ago I started a tradition of beating every level of every world. Been a long time since I got the whistle

If you didn't reach world 8 with at least 90 lives and in your inventory: 3 flutes, 6 P-Wings, 2 Tanuki Suits and 2 Hammer Suits, you didn't beat the game

A while. World 3 has some of my least favourite levels so I often have a toot, even if it's just to world 4.

Knowing about how to get it on 2-1 really fricked up my OCD and now I always have to go for it, resulting in multiple suicides since you can't re-enter levels in smb3

I'm actually replaying it now. Up to world 7. Anyone else find the hmer suit isn't that great? Why don't the hammers work on the koopa kids?

kek I found this out last night, too. I dug out my old completed save file with a ton of items and started on World 1, put on the Hammer Suit, only to lose it to the fricking Koopaling because I kept trying and failing to hit him with a hammer.

I know they work on Bowser, though the challenge is getting to him with the suit. Fireballs also work, but they take many more shots.

      >When was the last time you beat SMB3's 1-3 without using the secret exit?
      >What about the fortress?
It was the last time I played SMB3, because it was forever since my last playthru of the game and I wanted to go through the whole game, not just skip to World 8.

      >Anyone else find the hmer suit isn't that great?
The hammers have an odd arc (and are slow) and the duck-to-block-fireballs isn't that great when everything else can still move around to hit you, and that some stuff throws projectiles that aren't fireballs. It's kind of handy in World 7 where everything is a stationary piranha plants or one that spits fireballs, but not so much with everything going on in World 8.

I mean, you can't really toss hammers while running, since you outrun them. So they won't hit anything in front of you while going full speed.

Nah it's not great but the shielding you get from fireballs when crouching was a nice surprise.

I can't even remember but my last playthrough I might as well have. My last playthrough I finished every stage and collected all the whistles but I never used them.

I wish there was an SMB3 hack that made it more like SMW. Replaying, free roaming between worlds. Maybe sprinkle some secrets around that require backtracking on the map.

Pretty sure that's the GBA port in a nutshell.
