That's a given, Crash implements the classic rule of 3's game design while Mario 64 experiments with more modern open world style sandbox-checklist completion design. One is timeless, the other is overdone to the point that it's a wonder why it ever took off to begin with.

Crash was never good and it confuses me when I see people pretend otherwise. At least Spyro and Sonic have some cool stuff that makes them an actual alt choice to Mario.
    Crash just fricking sucked

If you like 2d mario there is no reason why wouldn't you like Crash except maybe those levels where they give you a bike or some other vehicle, I never liked those but that's lik saying mario 3 sucks because it has some auto scrolling levels

The auto scroll levels are universally considered the worst part of the older Mario games so a game with nothing BUT that is pretty shit, yes.

Crash's level design is just not fun. I fricking love Mario and I struggled to bother to finish Crash 2

I think so, but fans seem to prefer 2 for some reason. Crash 2 isn't a very good game.

Though, Nights into Dreams was released a little before Mario 64 in the NA market, and Nights was generally much more compared to Mario and Crash.

    > "Upon Naughty Dog's first meeting with the executives of Sony Computer Entertainment Japan, the executives handed Naughty Dog a document that compared Crash with Mario and Nights into Dreams. Although Crash was rated favorably in the graphics department, the main character and the game's non-Japanese "heritage" were seen as weak points."

      >The Japanese version of Crash Bandicoot was made easier than the original release to appeal to the Japanese PlayStation market's preference for lower difficulty levels.[34][67] The localization hid the game's American origins as much as possible, featuring no roman letters for instance.[68] Pop-up text instructions given by Aku Aku were added for the Japanese version of the game.[54][69] Some of the game's music was changed at the request of Sony's Japanese division to be less "edgy". A screen in which Crash is struck by falling crates the player had missed in a level was altered after the Japanese children testing the game reported being disturbed and upset by the image. A death animation in which Crash is reduced to a pair of eyeballs and shoes following an explosion was omitted due to its resemblance to the modus operandi of a serial killer loose in Japan at the time.
Remember this whenever people say Japanese gamers play harder games.

It's actually because renting games was illegal in Japan. These "surveys" about what people want are related to focus groups and it's always bullshit, never trust it when it says "people from X place prefer X thing", you'll see it reflected on sales and actual popularity, not localizing changes.

        That's one wild serial killer.

I miss that brief period when PS1 vs. N64 vs. Saturn was actually considered a real contest.

Not really. Crash is Donkey Kong Country. The things I associate with Mario are tight, snappy movement mechanics, and power-ups, or "toys" to play around with in stages like picking up a shell and throwing it.

Crash feels very limited as far as 3D goes. There's 0 momentum, and the 3D space is very limited, there's a reason people call it a corridor game. It feels like that one bonus stage from Mickey Mania, but a whole game of it (and well, parts of side-scrolling which also feel wonky).
Jumping Flash was the real stand up for 3D platformers on PS1.

Crash is a "faithful 3D platform" game. That is, when the concept is the closest to 2D as possible, a 2.5D. Mario 64, on the other hand, tried to remove the limitations of 2D and making something with that 3D. It's not wonder Mario 64 is still the best 3D platform.
One was restricted by the concept of a 2D platform, the other tried to remove the limitation of a 2D platform.

So... apparently "Sonic was never good" wasn't enough and now we're hearing more and more about how "Crash was never good". Here's a tip, if a universally acclaimed franchise that's loved by many just isn't fun to you, it doesn't mean that it wasn't actually ever good and millions of people had some sort of group dellusion... you just don't like it, and that's fine, no need to try rewritting history because it doesn't suit your personal preferences.
