Black mage should have earthly elements, like earth, water and wind. White mage should have cosmic element like stardust, moonlight and sunlight.
Feels the other way around to me. White mage is earthly and nurturing like life. Black mage is esoteric and arcane.

I actually did after posting that, so maybe in this point of view white magic is harnessing and converting that energy to amend and suspend life while black magic is tapping into the raw force of the cosmos.

the original sprite has both a manjaw and manbrow which is even more visible when you upgrade to a wizard

the only reason people think it could have been a girl is because the white wizard has long hair
which is silly because even the red mage/wizard in this game has long hair
even as a child when this game came out and thinking at first glance that a robed healer would be a girl, the manface eventually convinced me it was a dude
