And to add insult to injury they made an interesting battle system, and then hobbled it by locking away advancement and roles, and restricting your choice of character for the first twenty hours, and obnoxiously held your hand the entire way, making it an exercise in selecting the insta win paradigm that they gave you and occasionally pressing auto battle

dont need level caps. i wish everything scaled with you in rpgs so you can play them at your own pace. so you can go through the story and end the game whenever you want. level ups should only determine how many skill points you get to customize your own character and what skills enemies use in combat. if you grind high enough enemies will use advanced skills to keep it fair and challenging. no rpg does this and thats super disappointing because its such a simple concept

It's funny because I ended up loving FFX, but as a kid the thing that made me drop it was getting the airship and reaching the Calm Lands (which as an adult I found is hilariously close to the end of the story) and realizing a World Map was never coming. I was so disappointed I couldn't bring myself to finish it. The linearity bugged me up to that point but I found the combat, story and characters engaging enough that I was alright with it.
It's kinda sad we just never really got that again. Like I said, I've come around on FFX since, but it saddens me that the traditional JRPG formula is just not acceptable for FF anymore.

They took away the dot management and made it an actual summoner. The problem is that they have 4 buttons and a VERY uninteresting rotation. You used to have three systems to manage, dots, nukes, and the summon as a pet, now you don't have dots and the summons just change the colors of your nukes.

My real answer: People have Final Fantasy fatigue. Western audiences were sorta introduced to FF with 4 and 5 on the SNES but it wasn't until 7 when it took off big. 8 was eagerly awaited, 9 was the 'love song' to older FF's, then came FF6, 3, and 2 for the PS1 (I probably got my numbers wrong on that, shut up you know what I mean) then came 10 which everyone loved, big hit. I would say '97 to '01 was Golden Years FF. FF12 was a surprising swan song, but after that is when I as a fan got FF fatigue. I've played enough FF, doesn't help that each game is its own separate entity so there's no one to look forward to in subsequent games. I just wanted to move on and FF isn't 'fresh' enough to make me go back.

They're good at, or were good at, making simple jrpg games. Their ambition got the better of them. It's funny because I ended up loving FFX, but as a kid the thing that made me drop it was getting the airship and reaching the Calm Lands (which as an adult I found is hilariously close to the end of the story) and realizing a World Map was never coming. I was so disappointed I couldn't bring myself to finish it. The linearity bugged me up to that point but I found the combat, story and characters engaging enough that I was alright with it.
It's kinda sad we just never really got that again. Like I said, I've come around on FFX since, but it saddens me that the traditional JRPG formula is just not acceptable for FF anymore.

That's the fun part. Just consider it the entire game and 13 is actually good, sans some big flaws with the battle system, limited equipment and no real towns. Shit like the titan gauntlet and stuff make it so that pulse seems to keep getting bigger even though you thought you'd already explored it all. Then 13-2 does significantly better by cutting out the first 30 hours of fricking about and drops you into the real game much faster.

They took away the dot management and made it an actual summoner. The problem is that they have 4 buttons and a VERY uninteresting rotation. My real answer: People have Final Fantasy fatigue. Western audiences were sorta introduced to FF with 4 and 5 on the SNES but it wasn't until 7 when it took off big. 8 was eagerly awaited, 9 was the 'love song' to older FF's, then came FF6, 3, and 2 for the PS1 (I probably got my numbers wrong on that, shut up you know what I mean) then came 10 which everyone loved, big hit. I would say '97 to '01 was Golden Years FF. FF12 was a surprising swan song, but after that is when I as a fan got FF fatigue. I've played enough FF, doesn't help that each game is its own separate entity so there's no one to look forward to in subsequent games. I just wanted to move on and FF isn't 'fresh' enough to make me go back.
