Where did it get the reputation as the hardest NES games? It's one of the easier games in the library, and even a deathless clear doesn't take a great deal of practice.
It's nowhere near the level of Battletoads or Ghosts n Goblins.

It didn’t. No one has ever claimed this. You will hear Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden, Adventure Island in that topic. Not Contra. Only the voices in your head have ever said Contra is one of the hardest NES games
And don’t post some shitty game journo top 25 list to prove some dumb point
One hit deaths and only 3 lives per continue kill the casual. Not to mention its ubiquity among retro gaming. It is a popular classic and therefore people try it out. As much as retro gamers know about Battletoads and Ghosts n Goblins, it's probably "one layer" deeper into the retro game pit. It's easier for popular/famous games to garner a reputation. That's my take on it at least.
Shitty journo lists are the reason it gained that sort of reputation.
>It didn’t. No one has ever claimed this.
gaslighting
What the frick is this zoomer revisionism? Contra is textbook unfair and brutally hard videogames to normies
>Contra is textbook unfair
Examples?
God, I can't stand you stupid illiterate ESL mutts.
READ THE ENTIRE FRICKING SENTENCE IN ITS ENTIRETY.
Contra is viewed TO NORMIES as the textbook "le omg so hard and unfair" "retro hard"/"nintendo hard" game. Even a lot of people here consider Contra to be an example of classic retro difficulty.
>completely disregarding the fact that 8 year olds destroyed this game
>using the term “normie” instead of normalgay or NORP
have a nice day you underage shitstain
>NOOOO YOU DIDN'T USE LE HECKIN SEKRIT CLUB LINGO
oh shut the frick up you insufferable homosexual
Is little boy angry? You gonna stomp your fat feet?
Jesus frick... Anyone remember that 'but I had breakfast' pasta about low IQs?
I beat Contra no deaths, dumbfrick. My point is that Contra has become the poster child for difficult NES games when it's literally easier than the average NES game
It’s literally not you dipshit. Mute the voices in your head. Many others pointed out that Ninja Gaiden, Battletoads, etc. get this rep. Not Contra. Frick off. You’re probably that homosexual journo that failed the cup head tutorial
>It’s literally not you dipshit. Mute the voices in your head. Many others pointed out that Ninja Gaiden, Battletoads, etc. get this rep.
This is zoomer revisionism at its finest. Only in serious enthusiast communities with highly skilled players is that notion held. Even here, most consider Contra to be some impenetrable wall of difficulty.
>You’re probably that homosexual journo that failed the cup head tutorial
I have all Expert S-ranks in Cuphead as well
>even here
Never happened. Nice LARP their permhead. You will never be a boomer
Tbh Ninja Gaiden is average as well. Same for Castlevania and Mega Man games. Out of all the popular 'NES hard' games Battletoads, Mario 2JP (the original version) and Makaimura are the only ones that actually deserve the title
>textbook unfair
It’s standard fair and standard difficulty. Cope and have a nice day zoomer. You will never be a boomer
Most NES games are garbage shovelware that are too tedious or impossible to finish. So, yeah, Contra is one of the easier ones. And Ghosts n Goblins is a mediocre console port, so I wouldn't recommend it anyway.
a lot of them weren't actually that hard on hardware+CRT but emulation or HDTV lag could make them more difficult. everyone who played Battletoads back in the early 90s knew it wasn't really as hard as e-celebs made it out to be.
Maybe the turbo tunnel section since that is almost entirely audio timing/input lag, but Battletoads is much harder than just the turbo tunnel
All the "hard" levels like Rat Race and Clinger Winger were like that. Input lag made them a lot worse.
As far as action games go, Adventure Island, 1943 and Kung-Fu Heroes are harder.
But the most challenging games on the system are probably racing games like Micro Machines and Konami's hardest game on the system is Motocross Champions.
This is wrong and I don't believe you ever beat Super Mario Bros, shut the frick up. It's 2023, people have beaten every NES and even every official Famicom games ever made and then some and iirc only a SINGLE one is "impossible to finish".
He’s unironically correct, NES has like 800 games and there are maybe 50 that are worth playing.
What's the impossible one?
One hit death and the fact even back then, most vidya journos had skill issue.
>Where did it get the reputation as the hardest
The same place your local mountain peak get its reputation as "the tallest."
Yeah, there's "____-er" variants, but everyone you know has only seen that. They didn't bother looking for ____-er versions of something that was ____ enough.
Battletoads is one of the best NES games, no matter of the difficulty.
>It's one of the easier games in the library
not it's not
>a deathless clear doesn't take a great deal of practice
yes it does
Never played any of them, but I've never heard anyone comment on Contra's difficulty. I have heard plenty of people complain about Contra III.
it didn't? you can get 50 lives and blast frickers with the spread shot
>using cheat codes
as bad as save stating
>blast frickers with the spread shot
If you're doing this, why would you even need 50 lives? Chances are if you need 50 lives, you're losing that spread gun fast
I do agree Contra isnt too hard though. I dont think anyone would say it's harder than Battletoads or ghosts n goblins
It's medium-hard and it's very well known. That's the source of the reputation. Battletoads is well known, but even more normal people will remember Contra. And normal people are only good at easy games, not medium-hard ones.
GnG is easier cause you get unlimited continues and mid-level checkpoints.
You don't have to replay the entire game when you run out.

Stop trying to inject implicit narratives in the form of "questions".
People used to play vidya for a mere 20 minutes a week, and whatever game they had that killed them twice on the first stage was "the hardest game ever".
Any more fantasies you are willing to share?
Shmups and run and gun games terrify people who don't really play them, for some reason. There's a perception that "bullets all over the screen", are hard to deal with, but that's mostly just a psychological thing that you get over very quickly.
>Battletoads
Now thats a nightmare
If you couldn't beat a game, you just sucked, and so you would just have no idea what everyone else was saying when they talked about strategy on later levels.
Guess that was the incentive to beat it. No excuse.
how big was the jump from NES/SMS to SNES/Genesis difficulty-wise? the jump to PS/N64/Saturn was huge. it was the first gen were most of the games were fricking easy. none of the well known popular PS1 games gave me any challenge. I'm talking about the general rule. of course there are exceptions.
>Where did it get the reputation as the hardest NES games?
Your stupid ass. Nobody ever claimed that, it's just a great game with some challenge to it. The last two levels get kinda dumb but it's just a matter of memorization then.
