If you're really interested in the classic, linear games, try Super Castlevania IV first. If you like it, give 1, 3, and Rondo of Blood a try too.
For the Metroidvanias, Symphony of the Night is the one everybody recommends. It's good, but if you want something a little shorter Aria of Sorrow is a good choice too. From there just play whichever ones you want.
Castlevania IV is a good game but you shouldn’t start with it since the multi directional whip might sour other games for you. I think 1,3, Bloondlines or Rondo are better places to start. I’d recommend playing Rondo followed by SoTN that way you can see what both sides of franchise have to offer while getting a nice story from playing them back to back
Only a few games are directly connected. Dawn of Sorrow is a direct sequel to Aria, 2 is a sequel to 1, Symphony of the Night has ties to Rondo but all of it's explained in game.Otherwise they're only loosely connected by "Dracula is resurrected, Belmont or occasionally someone else stops him"
if you don't want to go right into the deep end bloodlines is good. It's on the easy side as far as classic castlevania goes and it's also one of the better ones. I'm pretty sure the japanese version has infinite continues so you'll probably want to download that
just pick one that people say is good and see if you like it
the story in these games doesnt really matter and the continuity is minimal
my suggestion: play aria of sorrow, dawn of sorrow, or symphony of the night
same as every series
the first one
>nes game
nope
git gud homosexual.
castlevania 3 famicom version

good replies, thanks. I'll try IV first then.
The problem with nes games is that they have terribly unbalanced difficulty most of the time.

super castlevania iv, then rondoi oif blood, then symphony of the night. doesnt matter after that
How about you play a franchise with good games instead, like Hollow Knight
1-3, Super, Rondo, SoTN and if you want 3D, Lament. Don't worry about anything else.
Not OP but I'd like to know this as well, are the stories of all games in the series connected in some way?

Symphony of the Night, simple.
you play by its canonical timeline
There is never a scenario for any piece of media that this isn't moronic shitty advice. Release order is the only proper order for anything.
This is awful because you would leave Aria for last.
