the series means alot to you regardless of whether you own a official copy or not. the retro game collecting space is now full of speculators and scalpers. its basically over for real fans and enthusiasts at this point. just be happy to have real hardware and a CRT and an ability to play backups

playstation consoles known for failing lasers where only burned disk can be read because genuine copies have copy protection layer that wont have enough power to handle it anymore

disc motors are cheap as shit you can find replacement ones for ps1 very easily. the most difficult part is unsoldering and resoldering the new one.

If you can’t afford a $100 ode then you shouldn’t be spending your money on games to begin with. Just emulate and save your money for something actually important like a suit to wear for an interview for a job that pays more.

Seriously, it's fricking over, some games will never be physically available anymore for the people who actually want to play them. We cant only pray that speculators get some divine punishment one day
    t. waited years for the price of certain games to drop, they never did

this, and even if they drop in price significantly it would probably mean that the financial situation of most people degraded badly or some factor that make tons of people drop collecting and playing games.
i paid 60 bucks for each silent hill in 2018 but sold them in 2022 since i play much less nowadays and even if i liked them a lot i used the money i got from selling them to buy a bass that gets daily use.

They got a slight punishment when the bubble collapsed for NES games, can only hope that happens for PS1/2 games sooner rather than later.

My buddy got it from a used game store for ten. Still $30 might as well be ten compared to $200.

I bought it in from Walmart sometime in 1999. I overheard some older couple talking about how much they enjoyed playing it. So I just bought it since I was looking for a new game to get.
Then I found a really neat used ex rental for less than 20 dollars. And my Wife still has her copy too.

Oh I also bought an original release from Japan for about 30 USD. I forget I finally got that version too.

I think the Grey Child is different between the two. Nothing so drastic as Resident Evil and BioHazard.

Pirate then? You can play on original hardware without having to fork over hundreds of dollars for a game.

I have a pirated copy, its just I'd like a real copy as well. idk, I'm kinda stupid lol

The demon children (they seem to have no official name and "Grey Child" is a fanon name that comes from a monster in the film, the thing isn't even grey) being replaced by mumblers is one of two notable differences. The other notable difference is that JP/PAL releases have a memo that can't appear in the US release due to it being bugged. It's still supposedly bugged in the other releases, not exactly sure how it works, but it is readable in game. Kind of a shame since the memo is fairly critical to understanding the full plot, it being a newspaper article about the fire that started during Dahlia's summoning ritual.

Beside that though the actual gameplay and balance is the exact same across all versions, nothing extreme like the RE games had.

    I just emulate.
If I ever buy a CRT and physical consoles, I'll just pirate.
I can understand the argument against piracy when you're buying from a developer but buying second hand is just going to greedy people.

The obsession with owning games instead of playing them is odd, seems overly materialistic.
I had stuff like Goldeneye 007, Super Mario 64 when I was a kid, having the physical cartridges weren't any more special than playing the game nor did it enhance my experience in any way.

      Holli

I don't understand why I feel the need to own games on cartridge, I think my brain just feels like something's off when I'm emulating when realistically I'm getting a *better* experience overall.

the only place to get a good deal in 2023 is facebook marketplace when some crackhead finds a stash of old gear in a box and wants to sell it that day for drugs. normal people go just price it exactly what ebay prices it at.

There is no magic website or secret trading forum for buying retro games at affordable prices, let alone something which is extremely sought after like Silent Hill. When you see people posting their giant collections of rare games on here, its more than likely that they bought all those games for less than $20 back when no one cared about them and a new console generation was rolling in.
    >but I want an authentic copy since this series means so much to me.
Yep, you and every other dummy who got into this series through YouTubers.

And please do not namegay on this board again, troony.

Pretty much this. I brought a lot of Playstation 1 games in eBay back in 2011 for less than 5€, Silent Hill included. Nobody is making a killing these days unless they get really lucky. Selling your used collection was standard back then, either people were going through a messy time or just wanted money as they went to college / started their lives.

Pre-2010 I used to be able to get fairly rare, out of print games new/shrinkwrapped for like $15-30. Now because of coomlectors and speculators it's hundreds of dollars

          Anonymous

Yup. I remember when I got my Resident Evil 2 and 3 GameCube still factory sealed (I was a big fan of the series as a kid and Resident Evil 2 featured Extreme Battle which was never released on PSX in Europe) copies for like 20€ each. Was wanting to get a Gamecube to play them but never bought one (ended up emulating REmake when I got a new computer) and seeing the price today just disgusts me. I was lucky enough to get a nice collection of stuff I loved from when I was a kid but coomlectors have completely destroyed this market for other people who really enjoy this hobby (owning physical to play at CRTs like we used to). Anyone who got in from 2014 afterwards don't know what they missed out.

          >collectors bad
          >yet somehow I need my games to be new and shrinkwrapped
Why do you care, you're not a collector right? Just buy a game with no packaging at all, those are bound to still be cheap

I really sucks, but the age of "genuine" retro collection is over, just not feasible anymore. It died when price charting sites became a thing, killing the concept of "finding a good deal" forever. Even if the person doesn't know a games value, most market sites will tell them while they're making the listing, giving them average sale prices.

I know how you feel though OP, there's many games I'm genuinely fond of that I'll never be able to afford "legit". But if you really wanna express your love of a piece of art, there's more ways to do it than letting a scalper rip you off. Get a silent hill poster and frame it, maybe get display figures of the cast, or even as simple as a branded mug or t-shirt.

And after that, you can sit next to your poster, put on your shirt, and sip from your mug as you play your bootleg copy, cause as far as I'm concerned, it's just as good as the real thing

I bought a pal copy recently for 170 bucks. I never played it before (apart from the demo in mgs1), I wanted to play it for the first time using the physical copy.

Take a look at regional/national third world stores. If you're from the US you can search in LatAm. You'll find cheaper games, just make sure that the game has multilanguage and it's just a Spanish/Portuguese copy.
Even with having to ship the game it will be cheaper, since most of those games have been on sale for years and the owners will generally accept way less than what they're asking

Got my copy at a thrift for $3, missing the back insert though. Vr stuff is over valued to the point wgere its no longer fun to try new games. So i just buy hamster releases on switch or emulate.

I would say garage sales or thrift stores but nowadays theirs always a bunch of resellers scouring the shelves or stalls. I hate how competive game collecting has become it's like you have to see others in the hobby as oppenents instead of others you could strike a conversation with.

nowadays the only retro games i buy are on GoG when they are less than 5 dollars a piece.
i had silent hill and sold it for 150$ and nowadays when i want to play it i just emulate, these games also means a lot to me especially SH2 because i went through a similar story to james but i felt dumb having 200$ dollars games because yea im a poor gay and before being a poorgay meant very accessible retro games but now i guess having games just isnt for me,i still get to play a lot of games i just found a cheap way to do it.
i recommend Dark fall : the journal,if you liked silent hill, different but just as good horror.
