But then you get a shitton of useless weight from the screen
What exactly stops valve from just making deck controls as a separate pad? If deck wasn't hit by any troll copyrights the controller shouldn't be either. Are thery just afraid of MS taking any action if they cut into xbox controller sales by presenting a better working and better supported hardware for pc controller needs?
i think its because the SteamDeck is a handheld not a controller that it skirts the copyright. A steamdeck "controller" would infringe again cause its literally just a steam controller 2
Copyright doesn't work that way. The Patents the troll owned were invalidated.
The only thing stopping it is likely Valve's desire to make sure that when it happens it is a profitable product that they will be able to produce long term.

Looking for a up to date source, it happened before the Steam Deck release. The initial decision was based on prior art not being allowed in the initial trial.
Ironburg claimed to own the concept of buttons on the back of a controller, but there were controllers produced as far back as the 90s with them.

This is even closer to the sketch and it had been released 4 years before the 'patent' on the concept of buttons on the back of a controller.
You mean remote play?
My internet doesn't work was in jest, as I didn't want to Google and rather be spoon-fed.
But I actually searched for it some time ago and remote play was the only solution.
It's not a valid solution by the way.

Why not? It literally works. You don't have to look at the screen, dummy.

Remote play channels the audio to the Deck.
The screen drains the battery.
I believe wifi has higher latency than bt, which is already high.
Yeah I can go through some hoops and loops and have it working, but I want it to be seamless, this is far from an optimal solution.
Wake me up when they patch it so you can use it as a controller directly connected to the computer via cable or bt. ie. never ever

>audio to the deck
Mirrored, unless your settings are wrong. In any case you can set it to still play audio through the regular speakers. >screen drains battery
Then lower the screen brightness. >latency
Controls don't have any noticeable latency as they aren't in sync with what's on the screen, they get passed immediately to the PC.
Yes. Microsoft sent a patent troll after Valve by 'licensing' a patent, giving them the funding to pursue Valve This was the patent BTW. A poorly scribbled Xbox controller. This is all it takes for Microsoft to cost their competition tens of millions of dollars in legal fees. A company smaller than Valve would have been forced out of business.
Valve did win the court case which is why the Steam Deck was able to happen, but we probably aren't going to see a Neptune layout controller until Valve has a new Steam Machine to bundle it with.
depends, to play dicked with Steam Deck i think is almost required. Its great for pc only games. My only complaint is that we should have gotten v2 by now
I bought it when they went on sale before being discontinued and I only used it a handful of times. It's a really neat device but it has no future because it missed the main point of a controller over M+KB. It's not easy to use and plug-n-play.
If you bother customizing the control scheme or downloading a setup someone else made for specific games then it's really neat but that isn't why I would use a controller. I want the controller to be easy to use and intuitive right out of the box. It won't beat a keyboard for customization anyway.
Same, there are just a few little tweaks I'd like >remove the stupid plus sign from the left track pad. It is not a D-pad. It is nowhere close to a replacement for one. Stop pretending >Replace the analog stick with a D-pad, or at least a button diamond. We don't need it since the left trackpad does the job >Make the L and R buttons quieter. Right now they are Gamecube controller loud. I can't play this when other people are sleeping >Let us order a version with the A and B buttons swaped. Its annoying going back and forth between the Switch Pro controller and this >give us the same Steam buttons that are on the Deck >A headphone out port would be great
the steam controller not having a real d-pad is a real killer for me, even using the trackpad as a dpad is awful since its so fricking loud menuing. I ended up just using my DualShock 4 with buttplug accessory
Cant improve upon perfection.
Here.
Can I have that, but without the screen?
Same
You don't have to use the screen, you can use it as a controller with your PC.

Technically they can pay the patent troll and sell the controller for $120+ so they don't make a loss on it, but people would hate them for that.
>They could enable fraudulent patents made specifically for the purpose of legally fricking people over

How?
My internet doesn't work.
You don't need internet for it. You just need a network connection between your PC and your Deck. Local Wi-Fi should be good enough.
You mean remote play?

I've been honestly considering using my SteamDeck as a controller since its so comfy. But I dont play any new games so it feels like a waste.
is it true they can't make these anymore because of some patent bullshit?
Yes. Microsoft sent a patent troll after Valve by 'licensing' a patent, giving them the funding to pursue Valve This was the patent BTW. A poorly scribbled Xbox controller. where's your dpad
reminder to update the steam controller so it gets Bluetooth functionality
Is ti worth getting one used?

Something on my steam controller broke and now I'll never get it replaced
>mfw I got it for 5 bucks when Valve was clearing the warehouse
I like steam controller so much bros, its so great with the steam deck

Nintendo should change their shit. It is annoying that their layout is backwards from everyone else.
everyone is backwards from Nintendo

It's being worked on rn.
god bless valve for still supporting a discontinued piece of hardware from 2015
