start and end with megami tensei 1 for famicom and ignore the rest, aside from devil survivor 1 if you really want, just as long as you know that it's not really technically a megami tensei game as it's not a dungeon crawl 'em up
pick one that looks interesting and play it
they're all pretty different from each other so even if you don't like one, you might like another, and they don't really invalidate each other.
Persona 5, SMT 4 and 3, Devil Survivor, DDS 1 and 2, Strange Journey. And you basically cover all the sub genres in the series. You can just ignore the dancing and Raidou Kuzunoha games.
Nocturne and IV are probably the best entry points. V is ok but not much point when the updated version comes out soon. Digital devil saga is really good but plays more like a standard jrpg without the demon collecting/fusing.
From there just play whatever games seem interesting to you.
My brother in YHVH, you just had to spam Zio on everyone.
By the way, does anyone know if there's any plan to translate the psx or gba versions of SMT2? I don't really like th//e snes version and it's shitty translation.//
like even more so than FF. I think with SMT you have to really know what you're looking for. >Dungeon Crawlers (Modern)
Strange Journey
Nocturne * (I think Nocturne is a little outdated but if you're starting with it the loss of QoL shit won't bother you)
SMT V (not really dungeons since it's more semi open world but it's more gameplay focused)
>Narrative Focused RPGs
Devil Survivor 1/2 (Short playtime)
Persona 3/4/5 (Long playtime)
SMT IV / IVA (Medium Playtime)
>Dungeon Crawler (Classic)
Persona 1
SMT 1/2
If
>fricking holy shit your childhood friend gets raped and eaten by demons and that's fricking hot, i mean im probably not gonna play the game and just look at the hcg set
Giten
>start with the snes games then move to ps1 and saturn PS2 thats the order frick you
I've never played any of these, and I never will, but this is based and I agree.
SMT 4 is probably the best starting point, having good quality of life features and a great story. The first few hours are a bit rough, but it gets a lot better after that.
4 Apocalypse is a sequel to 4 so you should play that after 4, but maybe not immediately after since it reuses a lot of assets from 4 and you might feel burned out. 4A has two routes, a power of friendship route and an edgelord route, the power of friendship route sucks but the edgelord route is great.

SMT1. Endure the pain. Grow strong. After beating SMT1 I gained untold levels of patience.
Kikure hime has estoma
SMT1 is the easiest game in the series, if OP wants to suffer, he should play Strange Journey, or MT1

You shouldn't.
SMT 1 for PSX or GBA
If you find it too boring or easy go for SJ or Nocturne
Devil Survivor 1 for DS if you like tactics gameplay. otherwise, SMT IV for 3DS.
If you want to try a Persona game first, P3 FES
play SMT 5 vengeance when it comes out
