This is the kind of effort posts I can get behind. The Ashnime truly brought out the worst things out of everyone at the time and beyond.
It's honestly incredible how fricking bad the M8 was.
Absolutely no one came out better out of that. No one. Arguably only Cynthiagays with the "was not defeated at full power" argument with no Mega Garchomp, no Kommo-o and no two gimmicks and Irisgays because she got upgraded into Champion even if all she did was lose afterwards came out winning or better but even those arguments are full of stretches and copes.
Not even Leon since Leongays (true) (yes, they exist, just not on /vp/) also hated it because how much of a overpowered gary stu battlebot they made him be while completely neglecting his other facets. And that's without mentioning how people who were neutral to him started to dislike him and the people who disliked him disliked him even more because of that same portrayal.

Personally I never understood that complain because that kind of battling style is perfectly in-line with Lance's personality. Being so prideful and all about muh strong dragons and all. And even so at the end he used mememax strategically while banking on Dragonite's endurance to chip on Diantha with the hail.
I was more bothered by how that battle was a borderline slideshow and how it was completely lacking in dynamism and was practically straight-up ripped from the games with how it was all but turn-based than anything else.

Irisgays. Started out from I picked up as relatively harmless but getting made fun of for their gym leader turned champion. Then the anime took a turn with Journeys and upgrading Iris into a champion and that drove a fat load of them into hyperdrive, which escalated with the M8 match. From there on out, incoherent shitflinging between Irisstalkers and Cynthiastalkers in virtually every thread about one of them except the latter's general. Speaking of Cynthia
Cynthiagays. Gen 4 is a hotpot for sure so I will not dive into that one about the games and anime, but holy shit Nostalgia certainly did it's number on those who either grew up with those games in particular or get hooked or even gaslit by the memes about her. Add the shitshow of the Masters Eight and you have the recipe for homosexualry over Power levels.
Note how both were majorly enabled by the events within the anime, the shit writing of that World Tournament further cementing the moronation on all sides.

But here's the thing, the hindsight started to point out all the redflags towards a departure of him as a protagonist. Whether it would be the Pikachu Origin story as the very first JN episode, all of the previous companions and some rivals returning, with a fair amount of them being given a more conclusive status quo while giving the same air of open-endings to let the imagination go wild. All of it in a Legacy anime. Despite it being mainly mediocre or shit, what better hill to let die on? The copes escalated until December 16th and then the announcement internationally and in various languages was made alongside a statement of the broadcasters PR guy or whatever commentating on the departure, signalizing the seriousness of the 11 episode finale. cont.

Dianthagays are mad because after they finally were given a boon after a decade of people shitting on Diantha they took ten steps backwards right afterwards leaving them in an arguably even worse position because of how awful the Leon vs Diantha fight was.

Sure, there was little sprinkles of nice things like

I mean, as I mentioned, people were looking forward to Ash vs Cynthia for over a decade. I don't think anyone expected her to win, but people kind of expected a better and more meaningful battle, you know? People aren't mad about the result, but rather the how things happened. That's how I see it.

Personally I never understood that complain because that kind of battling style is perfectly in-line with Lance's personality. Being so prideful and all about muh strong dragons and all. And even so at the end he used mememax strategically while banking on Dragonite's endurance to chip on Diantha with the hail.
I was more bothered by how that battle was a borderline slideshow and how it was completely lacking in dynamism and was practically straight-up ripped from the games with how it was all but turn-based than anything else.

Yeah. I think it's important to make a distinction between Ashgays and selfinserting Ashschizos. Ashgays like the character and want to see him written well, selfinserters don't give a shit as long as he wins stuff.
