basically, if it's capable of 3D then it isn't retro
Whatever you say, gramps
If it released before the Wii U it's retro
Fricking Amiga can do 3D
You heard me.
Star fox was on the snes
Spectrum 48k could do 3D.
Driller - it’s a genuine 3D game. Polygons.
>PS1 isn't retro
moronic boomer moment.
>PS3 is retro
moronic zoomer moment.
Anything before 360/PS3 is retro, or basically anything before HD gaming.
PS4 is a retro console
objectively correct
Sanny...... I don't have foreskin.
me neither bro
they frickin stole it
The state of americans
Bad image, Sanae doesn't talk to people with foreskins like they're people.
Why don't you do it with your tongue then, Sanae
Sanae is sexy. I want her all to myself.
Up to gen 5
Milennial console board when
The switch to HDMI is what I would consider the end of the retro gaming era.
And yes, I understand that the original version of the 360 had analogue only, but every consecutive iteration had HDMI.
retro stops at gen 4
after that it's classic consoles until gen 7 when we finally have HD consoles, and gen 8 is modern while gen 9 is current
>Gen 5 was the last retro gen
>Gen 6 was the last gen with integrity
>Early 2010s was the last bronze age for FPS until as it collectively as a genre went to shit (Halo Reach, Tribes Ascend, Chivalry Medieval Warfare, TF2 still cared about TF2 until 2013, Killing Floor 1, Minecraft before Beta 1.8, Fallout New Vegas)
5th gen and prior. 6th gen honorary retro for being the last soulful generation.
Nintendo Switch
if your console has:
1) built in internet connectivity
2) an internal hard drive, AND
3) hdmi output
then it will never be retro
this is where i draw the line personally
the PS3/360 era isn't retro because there hasn't been any meaningful evolution in vidya since that era.
That's a cute meira!
Don't you ever get tired of posting this literallywho?
Not really, no
>sea of thieves
>factorio
>I had a third example of a truly innovative game but I forget what it was as I was typing this
what's revolutionary about sea of thieves? I haven't played
Every big game turning into a GAAS scam isn't new?
Gen 8 next year will be retro
Anything before ps4
None. The correct categorization of consoles is worthless, and worthwhile, which is an empty set.
why do touhous have those stupid detached sleeves?
Name 14
Man I can only name 3 touhous in general, Reimu, Cirno and Biten
>doesn't know marisa but can name fricking joe biten
Damn, ZUN really hit a homerun with the newhus, huh
Well now you mention Marisa I recall her and would be able to pick her out but I don't think I would ever think of her when asked to name the characters, and she's the only character in that position
Surely you should at least know Reisen because of that guy who posts I love Reisen!
armpit sex
If the games can just be remastered for current gen and still look new then it's not retro
Until another standard of display technology replaces HDMI, yes.
HDMI 2.1 is a world apart from HDMI 1.0
ps1 is the cutoff , it’s the latest retro console.
it played on the PS2 and had 3D graphics, but the games and game design were clearly from the previous era, the change to ps2 games is very noticeable, it’s clearly modern gaming
Is this the thread that is Video Games?
Yes.
maribros…
we are… forgotten…
PC98 is retro.
it's also not canon
if the only metric to call something retro is
>10 years or older
then why not just say "old"?
I don't see why we can't find another descriptor for the era past retro.
7th gen gaming hasn't ended that's for sure. There has been no major innovation to mark the move between 7th gen from 8th gen because we get the exact same shit as we did during the 360/PS3 era with slightly better graphics. Make this thread again in /vr/ when VR treadmills with full body tracking becomes cheap as dirt.
Retro is pre-93. Millenial shit is PS1 to PS2, and zoomer shit is everything after that.
>NES was considered retro when PS2 came out, despite being only 17 years old
>PS2 is not considered retro now despite being 23 years old
it's a matter of technology, not age
snes games already looked ancient as soon as the ps1 came out
mgs4 will never look ancient
retro is an aesthetic, and modern digitally downloadable games will never look old unless they are deliberately created to be so
>mgs4 will never look ancient
When the frick was the last time you played mgs4?
Gen 5 and prior
in 2500 A.D., brand new videogames will be indistinguishable from those that came out in the late ps360 lifespan.
the technology plateau'd. you can't get more realistic than photorealistic.
it's over. innovation from now on will always be based on gimmicky controls, not on graphical advancements.
the era between the creation of the very first 2D games and the progressive perfectment of 3D games was unique and will never be replicated
>the technology plateau'd. you can't get more realistic than photorealistic.
So why did "the most photorealistic games ever" like MGS4 and 5 both look completely dated as fast as 5 years after release.
PS3 was touted as photorealistic and was surpassed. PS4 was touted as photorealistic and was surpassed. PS5 may seem currently photorealistic but actually isn't and will be surpassed.
And for the record the PS2 entries in the series still look good just by upping the rendering resolution. So it's more appropriate to say the tech peaked and started dipping down.
i haven't seen a game that looks better than mgs4 yet
To me, it’s in game design philosophy. Anything during or before n64/ps1 is retro. Ps360 games still play functionally identical to todays games. PS2 era games exists in a grey area, but I lean towards calling them modern
Consider this: retro is an aesthetic. Just like architecture in "classical" style was created in the antiquity, with revivals in Italian renaissance, neoclassical movement in 18th century, and extant in the present day in form of new classical architecture, it's not strictly tied to time and place. The ancients or medievals couldn't have constructed buildings such as Sydney Opera House or Burj Khalifa while they could build Pantheon or Arch of Titus, and analogously older games and consoles might be "retro" by necessity, and it might be appropriate to differentiate style revivals from the historical origins of the style ("neo-retro"), but it's not age that makes a thing retro. If we agree that for example NES and games made for it adhere to retro style, and created a device with similar capabilities in 2023 or 2100 (or, in terms of games, deliberately made them like that even if hardware allowed otherwise), it would be retro (or retro revival or whatever).
So it's entirely reasonable to say that games and devices from e.g. 1985-1995 represent the period of "retro style" with devices and games from later eras never becoming a part of it no matter how long you wait.
Why retro is subjective, my older brother owned an atari so that's retro to him, while to me the NES was the console of my childhood and therefore my definition of retro
glory to the CCP
Everything up to and including SNES, basically released before 1995.
Anything 15+ years old
>consoles
>"retro"
all of them
It has been 9 years.
More than 10 years old is retro
All of them.
Because they're all old hardware.
any console that emulates the graphical style of older systems
because I know the definition of retro, and it doesnt mean old
now vintage, I'm thinking vintage caps at gen 6, at least for now
SNES and older. Probably because I played a bunch of PSX and N64 as a kid
whatever you had as a kid
I came up with a simple rule.
It's not the 16:9 that does it mind you, its the internet connection etc that changed completely the meaning of games, just like the NES etc changed games from score shit to story shit.
And what about the Wii? It had an option for 16:9 like modern consoles, but the image output was still 480i, like PS2 or GC
It is infected with internet, and research groups, and movie stuff.
It is pretty much a modern console in this sense.
>It is infected with internet
Like PS2, GC and Dreamcast no?
All of them could be connected to the internet to play online
Saturn, Genesis, SNES, Famicom, & SG-1000 Mk II could too.
Yes, but there were no online games you can buy, microtransactions and tracking
You mostly didn't needed to input your credit card into the console.
anything that's not current gen/most recent console. pc, switch, ps5, xsex are not retro. 3ds, psvita, xboxone, ps3 ps4 retro.
Anything before the "home button" became standardized on controllers.
Sanae is a bawd
finally summer is over
>2100
Pretty sure humanity will manage to destroy itself by then with nuclear war or AI.
I would say the paradigm of the games define if they're retro or not.
From the original pong to the NES, games had the purpose of competing for the highest score.
From the NES to the PS2, games were about a closed package with a beginning and ending, a story if you will.
And from the PS3 and up, games are about online. online multiplayer, streaming, online money spending, online updates, online new parts you buy separately, online, online, online.
If the paradigm shifts again, then every "online console" turns retro.
For example if we get a Virtual reality bullshit like megaman battle network or gundam build.
In a "world" like this, "games" are a place you walk into.
Now by this definition, you could say score games are retro-retro, as the paradigm shifted twice.
the wii u is retro
moron
no
ur mom is retro
rude and untrue
>anon why are you keep talking about that Christian hospital in Gaza?
>it was the hamas, stop thinking about it
>you're making me upset
uooooooh israeli hag!!!
It's time to stop thinking in terms of a "retro" and "modern" binary and start thinking in terms of eras.
NES and SNES are an era.
PS1 and PS2 are an era.
PS3, PS4, and PS5 are an era, and one that seems like it won't end any time soon.
yukari shrinking herself and climbing into reimu's butthole
CUTE!~
I know that I'll never sway the broader opinion.
But I really don't like the idea of "retro" being a relative term. Be it 20+ year old games. 30+ year old games. Or even anything below or above that. It being a relative term is an issue in itself.
The broader the term "retro" becomes, the less useful it becomes. And if the term ceases to become useful, then what's even the point?
I'd argue that it's already something of an issue now. But to highlight the issue further. Imagine that we're like 100+ years in the future. Imagine if only videogames after the year 2100 were considered to not be retro. And that retro videogames was -everything- prior to 2100.
What purpose would it serve to have a game from 1990 under the same phrase and banner as a game made in 2090? Could we expect those videogames to be in any way similar? Probably not.
If anything "retro" should just be frozen. And keep referring to the same era of videogames. And a new phrase should be used to describe the videogames that followed. With yet another phrase being coined to refer to the games that follows that era.
Instead of having retro encompass 90% of the complete history of videogames and then having the 10% that are recent stuff be not retro.
I think it can be both frozen and have a historical, fixed meaning. This exists in the art world - contemporary/modern art can mean "art being made right now", while both terms also refer to specific time periods that have already passed. This allows museums to advertise to moronic tourists (museum of "modern" art) while people who are actually discussing movements and eras have no problem understanding those words refer to a specific time period.
I am incapable of having sex
"Retro" as a period means to me the time before the NES, when gaming was mostly done on disparate home computers like the c64 or apple //e.
Date-setting "retro" makes no sense because games have at best been stagnant for 15 years and more often devolved.
7th gen onwards cannot be retro, because at that point, corporations realized that vidya was going to be bigger than all other mediums, and increased their influence on it. Corposlop cannot be retro.

Touhou?
Game developers want you to think stuff like the Wii and PS3 aren’t retro so they can justify re-releasing the games from that generation for full price with the only changes being slightly prettier graphics and maybe a minor addition or two. If they tried to charge sixty dollars for Kirby Super Star today they would have to add a ton of stuff and they’d still get shit, but when they rereleased Return to Dreamland with a few new bells and whistles and nobody complained.
anon, devs are already remastering ps4 games.
>If they tried to charge sixty dollars for Kirby Super Star today they would have to add a ton of stuff and they’d still get shit
Do you have brain damage anon everyone loved this shit.
And it was 40 bucks when it released.
If people who were born the same year when a console released are capable of holding jobs, it's retro.
Every console that released before the year 2000 is retro.
They have a different design philosophy attached to them and how they were made that is different to those on 6th generation consoles and after.
Basically everything before Horse Armor.
Horse Armor ushered in the current era.
Is it 10 years old or more? It's retro.
Under this definition the ps4 is about to become retro.
>Skyrim is simultaneously retro and not
To be fair almost all if not all remakes in the last 10 years would make the games simultaneously retro and not
The remakes at least change the game
Skyrim is just Skyrim
Hello Gankerhu friends
sit on my face
>"which console would you frick?" the thread
We're getting old.
Oldest of Gen Alpha is 13 years old
Isn't it 11 ?
Your mother
PSX, and anything before It, is retro
PS2 is borderline retro but not quite yet
Home consoles 5th gen and below
Portable consoles 7th gen and below
i have nostalgia for xbox 360 lan parties
Hell yeah frickin Left 4 Dead
Atari 2600. I started with that, so hearing someone call the PS3 "retro" feels weird.
If it's 1080i it ain't retro
A console only becomes retro 20 years after its last official release, meaning that the PS1 will be retro next year but the PS2 not until 2034. The DC, N64, and Saturn are all retro.
If I say it is retro, and no one else can say otherwise, then it is retro.
It's over, CELL!
