I usually get filtered by framerate. Is it supposed to run at single digits in DosBox? Always made me feel that i am doing something wrong. And in the childhood, Pentium was to fast for the game.
Mass effect is a great series, 2 is the stand out and still a great game and imo a GOAT candidate. But the writing while functional and occasionaly fun, certainly isn't the best part of it.
Problem with modern RPGs, whether they're comedic or not about it, is their writing comes off as writers desperately begging the audience to take them seriously and acknowledge their lit major degrees. IE era games never really felt that way to me and were more trying to capture the tabletop group atmosphere where you had silly, serious and everything in between. Sometimes at the expense of tonal mood swings.
In my experience most RPGs today come off as pandering too hard to their audience. Every npc has to suck off your self-insert MC constantly with shitty romances shoved in your face and you deciding the fate of every little fricking thing in the universe.
it's been over a decade since i played it so i've forgotten almost all of the details. it's basically an epic level campaign that successfully gives you the feeling of being a folk hero engaged in mythic adventures.
Betrayal at Krondor, easy.
>Betrayal at Krondor
i've always wanted to play this but i'm a total zoomer. i know i would get filtered

Disco Elysium
this
it's ps:t, sometimes the normie answer is the correct answer
it literally never is
Normie answer would probably be Mass Effect.

>PS:T
>normie
Absolutely the frick not. Most people only pretend to have actually played it.
well torment is worse than numenera so no.
certainly a take
take off the nostalgia goggles and/or play it again it's quite immature compared to numenera
*strokes chin thoughtfully*
Stardew Valley
Wtf, there's writing in stardew valley?
Diablo. Gets the job done without pretentious, overdescriptive walls of text. Less is more.
>Less is more.
Almost every RPG needs this advice.
i think you just don't like the genre
You think the genre is something it's not.
no, that's you, otherwise you wouldn't be saying "almost all examples of this genre are doing it wrong"
the genre isn't doing it wrong, you just think it is something other than it actually is
This. Diablo is has the perfect tone and mood. Too bad they had to start throwing high fantasy shit and more detail in with the sequel.
Avernum
easily deus ex
Planescape: Torment.
Undertale. Toby fox is a furry and a genius.
Arcanum for me.
Wizardry 7
Wish more crpg's allowed you to create and share your own campaign, mods and host a server with it like Neverwinter Nights.
>no Underrail
The answer is Underrail
the expansion writing is really good
It’s Planescape: Torment
People wish it wasn’t, but it just is.
IWD/BG. I like traditional fantasy.
Even BG3 early access has a better writting than all your old shity game.
BG3 has mediocre writing, even for a crpg.

How so?
it's been over a decade since i played it so i've forgotten almost all of the details. it's basically an epic level campaign that successfully gives you the feeling of being a folk hero engaged in mythic adventures.
It has good character creation because you start almost at level 18 or so. And the story/characters/writing are decent. Otherwise it's awful.
Oh ok so it's just a Ganker meme. Thanks.
