I've seen one other much smaller company have an obsession with sequels needing new gameplay too, and the unsustainability of that practice sunk two of their biggest series while producing a VR focused inferior sequel for their biggest one.

Gabe on the other hand is currently single-handedly holding PC-gaming together with Steam and can reject trends for not going public with Valve. When he croaks there either need to be someone with the same attitude (hopefully someone who wants to see Half-Life 3 happen), but most probably it's going to be some MBA who will put Valve up on Wall Street and the next day announce Steam is now a subscription service.
