Tropico 5 and are worse for many reasons, chief among which is how they change the radius-based building of Tropico 4 to a tile system.
Where in Tropico 4 you can place little gardens and trees or small buildings in any gap, meaning that any space inbetween your roads can be useful, both a creative piece and something which provides gameplay benefit.
Tropico 5 and 6 are based in tiles, so if you have any space which is under 1 tile in size, you can't use it. It will be an ugly spot of grass in the middle of your city.
Also the campaign mode in Tropico 4 is great, fantastic even, and the same cannot be said for 5. And 6 doesn't even have a campaign
No, because the buildings weren't based on the tiles, you had buildings which were way smaller than one tile, buildings which were not evenly split by tiles, it meant that the tile system didn't limit the creativity in building
3 and 4 where on a grid for buildings and roads, but the tiles where much smaller so that you had a mot more freedom to place and of course decor was free place. 5 and 6 brought the hard tile placement.
5>6>4
Haven’t played 3, but 4 is basically an updated 3. 5 was by far the worst, because of their moronic decision to reduce building diversity by making more expensive buildings of the same kind just more efficient upgrades. That meant you had to build shopping malls, cathedrals and hospitals to replace your grocery stores, churches and clinics.
6 doesn’t have that issue, but it basically removed all possibility of losing the game, removed gender-exclusive jobs, had shit logistics, actually removed content from the game, when it cut many interesting constitution options (in the preview you were able to only have native-born, land-owning men voting, because it was divided between more categories, but in the game you only have 3 options, equal voting rights, male-only, only rich). But it expanded the eras and added factions back in, which is cool. But it‘s impossible to have huge revolts now, because they limited the amount of rebel units that can spawn at the same time.
They're some great city building games with a great aesthetic.
4 is the best one since it has the best city building mechanics with more customization in decoration and it has a great single player campaign
Love 4.
Love shitting on the ecologists, Penultimo being at his pieck of being an asslicker corrupt sidekick, having Father Nick around being both a lovable priest and a corrupt drunktard, having resonable non corrupt communists, corrupt capitalists that makes me rich by all means necessary, and shitting on the european union and the chinise.
I fricking love this shit.
Tropico 4 is also the most funny Tropico by far.
The characters are great. Both the story ones like Marco Moreno and Keith Preston, and the ones which appear in game like the faction leaders and foreign ambassadors.
Sunny Flowers and Penultimo make the best duo for the radio, the TNT radio station being a highlight of the game
Now that the thread isn't about to 404 I'll elaborate >Largest OST >Actually handles the eras system well via soil degradation, making diplomacy more difficult as eras progress, opening up new industrial production chains and introducing new factions. Higher eras give more rewards but have more things that can go wrong >Largest maps in the series >Most transportation and infrastructure options in the series >Better combat mechanics than basically any other game. Foreign invasions are no longer game over, troops are relatively slow to re-deploy in the larger maps requiring them to be spread out >Campaign is merely OK but revisiting the same maps in new eras was a cool gimmick >Has multiplayer (even if no one cared about it) >Actually has mod tools >Prettiest looking game in the series
The economy is still kinda easy and I do wish the edicts hadn't been cut back as much, but on the whole it's the biggest and therefore the best. Kinda like how Dawn of War: Soulstorm added 2 OK/10 factions and a rehash of the main campaign but was still the best by virtue of having the most content. Tropico 6 isn't going to be a radical change for anyone who's played the rest, but I think it's the got the best handling of large islands, eras and combat alongside a ton of different structures. As such going back to 3 or even 4 feels like a step back
The most important thing about 6 is they FINALLY figured out that people might want to rebind keys.
I love 4, but it's stupid that I've got to run a script when I launch it to rebind certain keys so it plays like something made in the last 15 years.
1 is probably the real best tropico. It actually requires you to spread out and tske care of your people and the politics are actually really brutal and meaningful.
5 and 6 are trash. For some reason they are changing the game to some shitty pseudo RTS where you are evil genius that steals landmarks. The game is supposed to be a city builder that plays like a tycoon game where politics actually matter. The new games are just complet ass.
The landmarks are a meme though, they just provide benefits that are largely useless (aside from one or two that are admittedly busted). Having political factions get more/less butthurt by building certain things is a good idea, but between faction demands and the tax cut edict being OP it unfortunately doesn't impact the game that much.
Tropico 3 is the best by far, people just don't mention it because they're zoomers who started with 4.
4's second best, 5th isn't bad but it doesn't compare, never played 6.
6 is basically a better version of 5, but I've yet to see anyone who disliked 5 and thinks 6 redeemed the series. I say this as someone who likes all of the games (including 6). As for T3 I agree it's a classic, 4 is where the satire started to die on it's ass and I think it basically set the stage for 5 & 6 being the way they are - for better or worse.
>4 is where the satire started to die on it's ass
What do you mean, Tropico 4 is way more funny. It has more characters and a full story based campaign mode.
Though the DLC of Tropico 4 did see the satire change into more of a James Bond supervillain thing with the Modern Times DLC and the Superhero extra mission
Yeah that's basically what I mean, T3 has you doing missions for literal fruit corporations and the metaphorical tongue is embedded in the cheek for basically everything. T4 is where all the whacky side characters, zany antagonists and Presidente becoming essentially a demi-God start taking root. It's not even an issue with T4 really, just a trend that started there and hasn't died down to the point that in T6 Presidente is saving the entire world, time travelling and dealing with super villains on a regular basis.

Does 1 hold up at all to modern standards? Sounds pretty interesting, but if it's clunky and unwieldy by today's standards then it's not really worth all the pain of getting into.
Depends what you mean by "modern standards" to be honest. Tropico 3 was a faithful soft reboot and so playing T1 isn't that much of a stretch, but you'll be consulting the Almanac much more often and there's a higher initial difficulty curve. These days the bigger turn-offs are probably the low default resolution and non-3D graphics. If you're curious just torrent the GoG version and give the first mission a whirl as it's a small download.
Tropico 1 is the most difficult city builder, it's probably the most pure Tropico game.
However it's not that fun since it controls like ass and is quite difficult.
Tropico 2 is a pirate themed game, which is neat. The only game to take a new direction in setting.
Tropico 3 is the best by far, people just don't mention it because they're zoomers who started with 4.
4's second best, 5th isn't bad but it doesn't compare, never played 6.
Tropico 4 is like literally just 3 with a few new features and a campaign mode.
It could have been a DLC, but that would have made less money.
Personally, I think the campaign mode alone made it worth it, but yeah it was a copy of 3.
Not that it matters now, no one is going to like 100% every Tropico game in order and feel ripped off
Tropico 3 just has less features than 4 though.
And it lacks a campaign mode.
Sure Tropico 4 is just a repackaged 3 with only a few additions.
I think the advertized mechanics were the ministry building which barely does anything, the secondary powers in diplomacy - which is another small change, and the campaign mode. The last one is a big thing though.
Tropico works perfectly with a campaign, since the most fun parts of the game are the beginning, so a campaign mode allows the player to have the fun and then move on to a different storyline.
Yes and no. You get sent to an island that has it's own story but there are reoccurring characters and themes throught the missions and of course many missions have events or limitations that you have to manage.

What's wrong with 5 and 6 then?
5 is dumbed down
9 better than 10

It was still a tile system, just many more tiles and not casualized to shit

agree but it was the only one I really played, was a little easy from what I remember
This, but i added all the music from 3, for max banana republic comf
also this, 3 had the best music by FRICKING FAR.
6 is a close second. while they don't have tracks with many vocals in them it's still a fricking banger and still feels like Tropico.
Though 1 is also still great, I kind of like the more softer, relaxed style of it than the high energy mamba of modern tropico but each their own.
5>6>4

You used the greater than/less than symbols wrong.

This is the less than symbol.

Who?
never heard of these games before but they sound kino
They are.
they're a lot of fun
it's a city builder game with less focus on pure autistic efficiency and more focus on doing goofy shit just to see what happens
They're some great city building games with a great aesthetic.

Tropico 4 is my go-to midwinter game

Has anyone played 1 or 2? I never see them mentioned.
2 is fun and very unique but not very deep and gets super repetitive a few hours in. The music is great as usual.
1 is probably the real best tropico. It actually requires you to spread out and tske care of your people and the politics are actually really brutal and meaningful.

Have you seen the new sprocket factory?
I wonder why it's so heavily guarded.
Have you tried the new Tropico Pop, it has no natural ingredients and is made entirely in the new chemical plant
Yeah that's basically what I mean, T3 has you doing missions for literal fruit corporations and the metaphorical tongue is embedded in the cheek for basically everything. Have 4 never played it
I have 4 with all the DLC. Can't remember where I got it from but I'm sure I never paid for it.
The whole game with all DLC a few years back was on sale for like 1 dollar
Had to look into it.
got it from some bundle for $1.99 five years ago.
Yep, that's what it was.
It was like 99% off, and it was under 1 buck if you didn't buy the DLC.
Tropico needs trains
I just want a Tropico but set in modern Africa this time. The potential is here.
Tropico 3 is the best by far, people just don't mention it because they're zoomers who started with 4.
4's second best, 5th isn't bad but it doesn't compare, never played 6.
this. Tropico 3+expension, and Tropico 4 and after feel completly useless. Even visually.
4 is basically a lazy copy of 3. They simply reuse most of the building models. But 3 was indeed fantastic, so it isn't too bad.
Tropico 4 is like literally just 3 with a few new features and a campaign mode.

What do you even do in a campaign? Is there some sort of storyline?
Yeah there is a storyline.
It's pretty alright.
The missions all change the gameplay, some more than others.
huh neat, guess I'll give 4 a try then
Yes and no. You get sent to an island that has it's own story but there are reoccurring characters and themes throught the missions and of course many missions have events or limitations that you have to manage.

Some of the best jokes in the series are hidden in the Tropico 4 campaign
the radio in 3 absolute power remain the best.
i like the quotes in that game
>PRESIDENTE, THIS IS AN EMERGENCY someone is stealing money from the treasury, AND IT ISN'T US!
