These 3 and V and VII are the 5 must plays

  3. 11 months ago

IV, VI, VII and IX are the most beloved games by the most fans, and the ones I could easily recommend to anyone.
Out of those, I'd say 7 is a safe bet for a beginner. It was a huge phenomenon back in the days, and it's still very enjoyable, atmospheric and even comfy game. The gameplay-mechanisms are simple enough for rookies to get into, but hard enough to master, keeping the experienced players interested. There's also tons of optional side quests, minigames, etc.

After that, choose your poison. Since the stories and worlds are (usually) not connected in any way, you can pretty much shoot blind. Different things appeal to different people, and that's also why there's so much arguments about various titles in the series.

I for example really liked the FF XIII trilogy as a whole, but I know that many bash it as the worst blunder of the millennium and death of the series.

The ones I would personally recommend skipping are the NES originals (1-3) and the MMOs (11 & 14). I also wasn't too fond of VIII and XII.

      Anonymous

13 was alright, LR was shit but 13-2 was extremely enjoyable for me. The capturing monsters for your party gimmick was a lot of fun and just in general the best combat.

      Anonymous

14's story, considering that the main plot they had been building from the start has ended on the lastest expansion, was honestly one of the best FF storylines I've played and I would highly recommend it to any fans of teh series and newcomers alike. I absolutetly hate MMOs and the only reason why I decided to play were because so many people told me the story was good. Honestly 14 feels more like a single player game that you can co-op. You can even do the main story dungeons and some of the side quest dungeons with npcs instead of other players if you want.

        Anonymous

        This is correct

        I never thought I’d prefer anything to 7 until I played 14

They had a poll in japan recently for the 35th anniversary asking people about their favourite game, character and soundtrack. 14 was number 1 for favourite game, and one of the characters from 14 was the most popular character which is huge considering how much japs love cloud and sephiroth.

          Anonymous

It's a shame they forgot the actual gameplay in 14. It's a non-stop barrage of cutscenes and YE OLDE TIMEY TEXT MARATHONS.

If you didn't play these games when they came out then don't bother. You have to have patience for these games, which boomers no longer have and zoomers never had in the first place.
There is a lot of waiting, a lot of dialog, there is a lot of filler. Not saying its bad but its not for the fried dopamine receptors you most likely have.

Pixel remasters for 1,2,3, and 5.
SNES version for 6. (for the sheer number of QoL romhacks)
    FF7 original and Remake
FF8 PC. Download the mod that makes drawing magic not a 30 minute chore every battle
FF9 PC with the Moguri mod
FF10 on whatever, it really doesn't matter
    FF12 Zodiac International release
You can probably skip XV if you get really burned out at this point. It's massively flawed, in some ways more than FFXIII but it's something to experience just to show how incompetent Square was in its development and how it shaped FF16 to be a movie hack and slash.

I just got finished 4 pixel remaster a few hours ago, I shit you not. Frick that game. The story is a messy hodgepodge of shitty and cliched ideas thrown together at random, gameplay is a step down from 3 and the final boss sucks balls. >I don't really like the "every character is X class and you can barely change their playstyle" format.
in 1 and the rerelease of 12 you pick them at the start and they don't change, but you can pick whatever ones you want
In 3, 5 and Tactics you can freely switch classes between battles when you have them unlocked
In 10-2, 13 and 13-2 you can change classes in mid battle as often as you feel like it.
in 2, 7, 8, and 10 there are no character classes and a character's stats and abilities are determined by something else(a system that differs in each game) that essentially allows you to do whatever you want with anyone.
in 4, 6 and 9 characters have fixed classes that you can't really modify or do anything about

      Anonymous

I really like 5's system because you can level up a class, learn the skills from it and use those skills on another class. So you can create hybrid classes, like a Ninja with Time Magic spells or a Dragoon with Beastmaster skills. It's really neat

I'd say that is more of a error of the player not realizing what the system gives them to work with (Not just Card Autism, but item drops and just plain buying shit to refine) and accidentelly baiting perfectionists autists to NEED to have 100 of a spell that isn't even that good junction material NOW.

VIIIs biggest asset and flaw is basically the same in that it is a clusterfrick that basically works against what will be your first instincts, like giving the SEED salary instead of money after battle (But battles still influence how the Salary Rank is evaluated) and the Fire Cavern test being a test of judgement (So you don't want too much time left when you finish it after setting the time limit, because that means you misjudged how fast you could do it).

Tactics supposedly is great but I couldn't get past the moronic vibe of the characters. 11 is an MMO. 12 is good. 13 seemed ok but I only played a little. 14 is an MMO. 15 has the most annoying combat, looks cool at first but it's really just hold dodge. Crisis core was good. I hear type zero or whatever is good. Hyped franchise because people are, overwhelmingly, basic.

Terranigma was on the SNES and is basically exactly the kind of game the FFs would have been if they hadn't been JRPGs. If they were Atari games maybe you'd have a point, but they weren't.

Because I'm not a homosexual that pretends it's the best game ever when it was a sloppily rewritten shitshow with poor-at-best-translations from an already garbage script. The gameplay is bad because you're better off *not* engaging with the gameplay. That said, Disc 1 is pretty good, shame it's bad from there. Dollet is pure kino, but it's telling when a game peaks an hour in. 8 contrarians are usually Spanish people that think they're identifying with the 'masculine' Squall, completely misreading his spastically written manchild schizoid personality as something to be desired.

This is a completely ridiculous claim on an anonymous imageboard. No, you saying that some guy is defending 8 and therefore must be a Hispanic is not conclusive proof of that guy actually being a spic
Carry on, I won't respond to your shitshow of a post anymore, I just hate cognitive biases

I've been on FF forums for 20 years. For about 10 of those, it was always Spanish speakers that were raving about how epic 8 is, whilst everyone else called it trash. So, you're either hablas espansol, or zoomers are as moronic as Spanish people. Because this 'ff8 is amazing' trend has certainly not been the consensus from the beginning.

I say Spanish but I also mean Argentines and BRs.

That's why the pixel remasters exist dude, they fix some of the tedium associated with the original games. Playing FF3 for the first time was a blast. FF1 was really fun as well - and I used mods to restore the NES difficulty. Making your party from scratch and naming your characters after your friends goes a long way.

Yes. Take it from me, I spent like two and a half months playing through the series' first ten entries in their original formats, save for some patches for I, II, and III for improved fan translations and being able to move faster.

It's been an incredible experience and it's made me appreciate how Final Fantasy's secret sauce is changing up the world and characters for each installment, including the combat system. You won't like some as much as others, sure, but it's necessary for the series to not get stale like Dragon Quest did.

alright homosexual, listen here I'm not even gunna read the thread, I'll just post the SUPERIOR way to play the BEST Final Fantasy games.

PSP version of 1 - Has the most content and the best balance.
I honestly can't remember if the PSP version of 2 has Reverse/Rebirth, so I'm going to recommend the GBA version. Do your research, and play the PSP version if it does.
Unironically the Pixel remaster of III if you wanna play this game.
Arguably GBA version of 4. The post-game is good here. The DS/3D version is also servicable. Don't bother with TAY
GBA version of V. If you want some spice, play the Four Job Fiesta version, but I would recommend Vanilla.
GBA version of VI with the sound patch. No questions here, every other release is ASS
Any version of VII that has the cheat mode. You'll want to speed up the game a bit in some parts, and I won't judge you if you use the fill limit break cheat/no encounters either.
STEAM VERSION OF VIII. You have access to the pocketstation content. This may seem small and trivial, and it is, but the extra stuff is nice.
OG PS1 VERSION OF IX, ON A PS1. I guess you can play the steam/ps4 version if you want the cheats, but I'm no b***h
OG PS2 VERSION OF X. All the remakes removed the S O U L. Play the Steam version if you can't otherwise. Skipping cutscenes is necessary if you're a casual who dies to a certain zombie inflicting boss.
If you really want to, Play Horizons for XI. Their server is populated enough you can get a semi-realistic experience of XI without paying a sub.
Any Zodiac age for XII. It's at this point different versions don't make much difference, but just make sure you play Zodiac age, and not the vanilla PS2.
XIII, XIII-2, and LR have gamepass/Steam releases. XIII isn't as bad as its made out to be, XIII-2 improves on all the good in the first, and LR has me conflicted, but isn't a god awful game.
Play the trial of XIV if you want. It goes up to Heavensward and they've made the game NPCable mostly

      Literally just
      >play the version of every game that I, a late gen 5 to early gen 6 gamer, played
Anyone that recommends a version of FF1 with mana bars can be completely discarded. The game mechanics only function with spell slots, allowing mages to spam infinite cures and eventually infinite fira during later dungeons completely trivializes the experience. Red mages in particular have literally no fricking downside because high level spells arent worth casting anyway on the mana bar system.

        Anonymous

        >The game mechanics only function with spell slots
This. Going back and playing the NES version made it way more fun. The floating castle being a space station was also a cool twist that just gets straight up removed in later versions of the game.
        >allowing mages to spam infinite cures and eventually infinite fira during later dungeons completely trivializes the experience
You must have meant firaga because you get items that let you spam level 2 spells infinitely. The whole limited inventory slots thing actually gives monks a really good use: carrying an array of magic items because they don't need to equip anything. You can go into the final dungeon being able to cast heal or fire 2/lightning 2 for free up to 3 times every turn.

Reminder if you play a version of FF that wasn't the original release, you completely miss what made people enjoy that individual entry in the first place. It's still fun to see reimaginations of older games reworked in different ways, but if you're trying to see what made the series popular in the first place, you should be playing the original versions.

This is why I'm going through the series in release order, it gives me a greater appreciation for how the series evolved. For example, I love how Yang the monk's claws are handled in IV compared to III - in III equipping anything on a monk removes his unarmed attack bonus which is pretty much always better than the bonus from the equipped claw, which makes them pointless. In IV Yang's claws convey no attack bonus but have elements attached to them so you equip them based on what you are encountering.

This is how I feel about Dragon Quest. Dragon Quest is a very iterative series, so it makes sense for each game to be a logical evolution in technology from the previous. To be fair they tried to do this with the DQ1-5 remakes, but 4 PS1 isn't in English yet and 5 PS2 looks a bit goofy.

6 is def the next one I'll play after 16. As for 7 probably partly because it's so hyped I'm being a bit contrarian by putting it off, part of it though is the characters/ setting don't grab me as much as the others do. There are exceptions but I usually prefer more typical fantasy settings to scifi.

The whole world is an experiment set up by the gods that's all about war. E.g. people forget anyone that dies so that they can go right back to fighting. Canonically, the same events play out over and over again so things only make sense with the revelations from the end of the game. Dragon's Dogma did it better.

      >many of the characters are slow and unweildy, but if you want them to still be useful you have to play as them
      >very few combat options
      >no aerial combat or jumping outside of the Jump ability which takes up an entire attack slot
      >plot involves a general that acts like a toddler whenever class 0 is brought up and intentionally self sabotages purely out of jealousy
      >plot involves drama surrounding characters forcibly having their memory removed that wouldn't be a problem if they didn't have their memories removed

7 is the only one with any real cultural impact, and it's pretty good by JRPG standards. Ambitious story, decent pacing, good art design with plenty of variety, good music. It's the best option (original version, not the "remake" that's really a shitty sequel).

Ignore everyone claiming 9 is good for beginners. 9 is mostly nostalgia bait, aimed at people who were annoyed by 8 making too many changes, and it's painfully slow.

All 17 year olds are cringe. This is just fact friend.
When you realise the voice-over is Tidus in his mature state reflecting back on things, you appreciate the changes in his character more. You can't start with a top tier bro hero. Then there's no growth.

Only now I realized that 7, 8 and 9 play with the MC having amnesia/memory problems. 6 too had Terra being mind controlled at start and her finding her true origin later

i dont know i think its ok and totally in character. i even like him actually. both character and voice. that scene is really not bad in context.

8 took it one step further by doing the moronic orphanage 'oh wowsers we were all together as kids!' spiel. That was one of the single dumbest plot points in the entire series.

Fwiw I didn't play the original, I played the pixel remaster of 2, but still. At no point in that game did I have to grind or do anything esceptionally out of the ordinary from any other FF game beyond being encouraged to use magic more often to level it up which was based and kino.

shame that the story only makes sense if you have Rinoa in your party all the time, and i really mean all the time with Squall

And to OP and anyone who wants to get into the series, you can start pretty much everywhere except 11 14 and 2. 11 and 14 are mmos so the gameplay is vastly different, 2 is the odd one out of the series thanks to its leveling system which some love some hate so i would avoid that as a starting point. All the rest have pretty much the same core mechanics, with the exception of 8 and 12 where in 8 leveling isnt a good thing since enemies scale based on your average party level and 12 is basically singleplayer mmo which is more fun then it sounds. Not going to argue which one is the best one to start, in the end they all play pretty much the same, level up, kill shit, get gear, magic etc and progress the story.

              >you've never touched a book, have you?

Because you clearly have no idea what a story or setting is if you think that 8 is equivocal to all others in the series. It's a mess.

Final Fantasy 7: A soldier reunites with his childhood sweetheart to join the terrorist group Avalanche in opposing the megacorporation Shinra using Final Fantasy Oil. All goes awry when they find out that Shinra was experimenting on a space parasite superweapon, and the re-emergence of Cloud's once-idol-turned-rival who had thought to have been dead for years...

Final Fantasy 9: A thief and his crew are hired by the regent of a princess to kidnap her and lead her away from her genocidal mother. Twists begin to emerge when it turns out the mother was only trying to steal her mystical powers, the Eidolons, in order to wage her wars. Little did she know, she was being manipulated by a super-weapon envoy from another realm, secretly plotting to steal away their entire planet...

Wait, what about 8? Where's he? Oh he's in the corner.
Final Fantasy 8: It's a story about these two mercenaries who are rivals, but they're also amnesiacs, and then they end up opposed to one another in a war after a series of political missions go wrong. The enemy army is being led by a sorceress who turns out to be the mother of the entire crew's amnesiac past possessed by a super space witch from the future who is trying to kompress time because she got really mad at existence and went crazy at the singularity. You've apparently lost this battle millions of times and are stuck in a time loop slowly being helped by another space witch who is also your half-sister because remember the orphanage thing? But don't worry, you'll have plenty of time to experience this moronic story as they find ex-machina after ex-machina to protract this dumb fricking story over 4 discs when it should have ended in 1.

You're being disingenuous and I can write similar bullshit about FF7 and FF9 while writing FF8 as the most interesting thing.

Final Fantasy 8: A mercenary is stuck in an eldritch horror timeloop held hostage by an eternal time war where a witch tries to possess your childhood friend with time travel powers to send herself even farther into the past to take full control over the universe to end this eldritch time loop and put people out of their suffering. You are there to try and stop this to both save your childhood friend as well as to give humanity a hope in this screwed up universe.

I don't even want to waste my time writing about FF7 and 9 but you could easily make it sound convoluted as frick with Zack, memory transplants and a prostitute selling flowers if you really want to.

Point is that FF8 by far has the most interesting setting, concept and story.

Final Fantasy 7: let’s run around aimlessly for 20 hours because oops I forgot everything that happened 5 years ago when the electric company put ghosts in my blood. Tifa could have cleared this whole thing up on disc one but chose not to because ???? Now fight a guy that died five years ago but maybe not and now he’s a god because he ate a lot of ghost energy or maybe it’s a space monster pretending to be him idk this translation is shit

Final Fantasy 9: oops I forgot I’m a space monkey sent to destroy earth and also garnet forgot about the summoner village she came from and also a guy on my home planet is stealing the ghost energy to bring his planet back to life and there’s another space monkey that’s mad he’s gonna die and it’s actually a thoughtful examination of the existential struggle with- *BOOM BOOM CRASH* SUDDENLY NECRON. Also the castle is a giant robot

Final Fantasy 8: you’re part of a military organization created to fight against sorceresses. You fight sorceresses and the final boss is a really powerful sorceress.

Ok you got me here I do say that but only because I legitimately believe that. No I don't like FF8 merely to be contrarian I legitimately liked it better than FF7 and FF9 when it came out and I still think it's one of the best if not the best FF out there.

Yes I'm one of those people that measure the quality of something by its best parts instead of on average. A game that is a 8/10 on average and consistently 8/10 is just a 8/10 for me. A game that is 6/10 consistently but has peaks and moments where it becomes a 10/10 is a 9/10 for me. Final Fantasy 8 was that. While FF7 and FF9 were way more generic, took fewer risks and lacked the general soul that FF8 had.

                >What was it that really aroused you about 8?
It was a story that was grander than life. It isn't just about saving yourself, your loved ones or even humanity. It's about the nature of existence itself, the universe itself being in an eldritch catch-22 timeloop that neither party wants to have happen. Both the protagonist and antagonist realize this is a bad thing and are suffering but they both have different ideas of how to end things. The villain isn't actually evil and essentially just wants to commit suicide to stop the cycle and let everyone just "rest" while the protagonist just wants to protect his loved ones and can't let go of it all and wants to find a way to continue existing without the timeloop.

It's just so much more tragic and unique of a story. FF8 has no villains essentially it's just a story about everyone being in a shitty situation they don't want to be in but not able to get out of it without conflict.

It's cathartic, kino even. Combined with the great card game, amazing soundtrack and best atmosphere of any Final Fantasy Game it is just the best experience if you ask me.

That the combat has some flaws and the story has some plotholes doesn't diminish from the above mentioned points being 10/10 for me.

The antagonist is a sorceress with big boobs and cleavage. And there's some sexual tension between the MC and her, especially as she wants to possess your girlfriend. There's this mommydom dynamic going on as a theme throughout the game and I love it.

It's interesting but it's not even a cohesive world. It's like someone randomly threw sci-fi assets together and called it a day. Triple Triad is cool, but it is unfortunately 'the game'. If you do well with cards, you win. It's a dumb system.

FF8 is hurt by its dull as frick intro. Every FF game has very explosive intro but FF8 has you in....SCHOOL doing boring school shit.

        Anonymous

FF8's intro is fine, except it gives players too much control too early. This slows down the pace massively, because you go exploring the school trying to find shit. Then, it lets you into the world map really early. The fire cavern test doesn't really give you a reasonable indicator: with choices as low as 10m and as high as 40m, the player will likely conclude they are about to undergo a major challenge. What do people do when they expect to face a challenge? They will aim to level up a bit, which actively punishes you in FF8. It's really bad at sign posting what it wants the player to do.

If you know all of this, and you blitz through it, the opening is fine. As much as I shit on 8, I find Dollet to unironically be one of the high points of the series, and was quite disappointed when the game didn't follow suit with it. At all.

1 - Good, comfy, get to pick your jobs. Overaching plot doesn't exist, it's like a set of adventures just for fun.
2 - Awful gameplay, story is kind of interesting but not worth it.
3 - First half is pretty good and well paced, slows down towards the end and becomes a bit of a slog.
4 - Excellent pacing, good gameplay, rare Final Fantasy that is just solid without any major flaws. Story is a bit silly, but fun with enjoyable characters.
5 - Good if you like swapping jobs and grinding, mediocre otherwise.
    6 - Masterpiece
    Chrono Trigger - Masterpiece
    7 - Masterpiece
    Tactics - Masterpiece
8 - Almost as bad as 2, level scaling breaks the game. Plot is nonsensical.
9 - Great atmosphere and characters, plot is 10/10 for disc 1 then it goes off the rails, gameplay is exceptionally slow and clunky.
    10 - Very good, fantastic.
    11 - I never played it.
12 - Love or hate I guess, style randomly copies Star Wars episode 1 which I always found strange.
13 - Not very good but at least it's playable.
    14 - Masterpiece.
15 - Not to my taste, but at least it's playable.

FFX was amazing because it had a beautiful tragic romance, and X-2 makes a mockery of the entire thing. If it's any help, in the they then retcon FFX into FF7, and wrote an epilogue story where Tidus kicks a blitzball, which turns out to be a landmine, and blows up.

      >Ok you got me here
You aren't a teenager anymore. Grow out of this shit.

Always makes me laugh how people expect so much out of FFVIIR now that le expectations are subverted and anything can happen not realising the dude responsible for that shit is at the wheel.

It's very campy girl power action. It's not super bad but it did make me cringe even though I was real weeabo. Compared to the more bitter sweet atmo of FFX, FFX-2 is pretty silly

Why is Final Fantasy 7 so popular? I legitimately consider it the worst entry in the series. It meanders on and on and on, isn't that interesting and gets incoherent in the 2nd half. Why the frick did 7 get so much fricking attention and praise and so many fricking spin-offs?

You should give 10 a try. it's my favorite in the entire series, but I also know people who really don't care for it.
You either love it or hate it for a multitude of reasons. I played it like 10 years after release so it's not nostalgia goggles either.

The first ten are all great, with IV through IX being the peak. After that it's more controversial, but they're still fun from what I've played. XI and XIV are good MMOs and XII is pretty good.

IV, VI, and VII are my favorites.

  178. 11 months ago

VI, VII, IX, and X are all great and easy to get into
I, III, IV, V, and VIII when you've refined your pallete a bit more and gotten used the series' common tropes and systems
XII, XIII, and XV if you're willing to put up with some mediocrity
    Don't play II, it's terrible.
