as a guy who has played both WoW and FFXIV, I don't see how its even controversial that WoW has better enviroments. Duskwood was made two decades ago and it blows everything in FFXIV out of the water. Not just in how it looks, but how its designed,with multi-level crypts as a mini dungeon crawl. Around mists of pandaria the zone design went to shit. In terms of gear, however, wow looks okay in classic at the latest and already looks like shit in TBC (giant glowy crystal pauldrons xF).
In terms of homosexualry, WoW is basically bioware tier at this point. It was also never based. I don't even remember anything about the dumb plot except everyone and everything is incredibly gay. FFXIV is pretty inconsistant / retconned between xpacs, but each xpac taken as its own work is pretty damn good.
Both games have extremely homosexual players though.

Yeah, I've never played WoW. XI and XIV have been my main MMOs since each of them came out. But every time I see a WoW zone I get very interested. I get urges to play the game just to go walk around the world and explore. Luckily I know it's otherwise garbage so I won't do that, but if XIV could take anything from WoW it would be the world design. I want to be able to walk across all of Eorzea, not just small segments of it.
Came here to say this, when I started playing XIV I was disappointed by how the zones look. The cities are alright but the environments are barebones. Also it's noticeable in comparison how WoW also has set color schemes for everything whereas XIV has this grayish semi-realistic look.

There's a very clear lack of being told to frick off by the devs, if Zodiark trancers can maintain an 850+ page forum thread complaining endlessly about how a pivotal character isn't evil then I think it's pretty safe to say the Final Fantasy forums don't railroad you into keeping negativity out of the dojo
XIV has more by virtue of having more players overall but you can just not go to Limsa and not interact with anyone outside of your own vetted friend group.
WoW is developed by trannies and the only way to avoid them is to simply not play the game at all.
I dunno how bad WoW has gotten since I unsubbed but my first experience when I made the mistake of visiting FF's Balmung I was greeted with some gays in Ul'dah's chat talking about transitioning.
Having said that, they seem to be contained in some servers. I've been playing in Diabolos for a year and save the occassional troony from other server promoting his degenerate house parties in Limsa Lominsa, I've yet to see people being openly gays be it in the world map, dungeons or high level cities like Sharlayan.
Helps that I actually play the game though.

True. PTR and its consequences have been a disaster for WoW. And they're not even worth anything because Blizzard rarely if ever does anything useful with the information they get from PTR testing. It's just glorified early access at this point/part of the "hype machine" with the datamining

WoW looks like a pathetic children's game, but it at least does it well. XIV is going for realism but looks like it was made in 2004 and has some of the most embarrassing texture qualities I've seen in any game in decades.

Yeah, but that's not what I mean. I mean the lighting in general. XI has that soft, ethereal PS2 lighting with shadows and highlights painted into the textures. XIV's lighting is more advanced and can look beautiful at times but at other times it makes your character look like they're a ghoul or made of plastic. 1.0 was a disaster graphically speaking, cause it was too ambitious for a massive game such as an MMO. The tech wasn't there yet, and it's well known that XIV's graphical evolution has been trampled for being on console.
Still, I love what XI is able to communicate with its graphics and it doesn't have that graphic powercreep that wow has, even though after remaking everything after Cataclysm

Feeling pretty good about how the shrine came about, the stone ceiling is flagstone lofts so I figured I might as well build some stuff "upstairs" too. Since I can lift from below, I decided to make a dining area for lalafells by sinking everything around 4 inches (added cushion seating for tall people). Need to think of something to cover the built in light as well as the two mossy areas from oriental waterflows below.
I always dislike lowered ceilings because they make camera control utter arse when you're inside. You can make interiors that look great on screenshots but for hanging out with friends vanilla ceilings are the best.

It's because those zones were created first, then they wrote a story to exist within those zones. Expansion zones write a story first and then create zones to act as set pieces for cutscenes.

That's very reductive, not that I expected much more from you. Generally if you RP with someone more than once you chat a bit out of character and learn things about each other. Or you just trade discords and see the "she/her :trans:" in their profile.

I'm a newbie to MMOs (I only play xiv) and although wow looks dated, it has that sort of ageless soulful feel to it, like the environments in Jak and Daxter. In XIV, the ARR areas look beaitiful but it starts to become more and more dull as you move to HW and SB.

WoW has way better zones. Far more foliage, doodads, treasures, enemy activity, etc. But to XIV's credit they are overhauling textures, foliage, lighting, doodads, etc in 7.0 which shows they have an extremely long term plan for the game. Needs to be seen.
They're both dated but in different ways. FFXIV has kept the same art style since the start but the technical graphics have changed with the level of detail and lighting of the different areas between new and old even with the engine being updated.
WoW's graphics are considerably more dated due to the heavy art style changes over time where you can can definitely tell the general design aesthetic and philosophy has changed over time with the technology.
So FFXIV is dated in its own way due to the general aesthetics being the same since launch for characters while WoW is more dated in a classical sense.
FFXIV is also a 13 year old game that draws from the modern FF aesthetics while WoW is a 19 year old game that draws from Warcraft 1-3. WoW takes a much larger leap in aesthetics while FFXIV is still Modern Final Fantasy.
TLDR:FF has more technical dating while WoW has style dating because FFXIV has the exact same aesthetics while WoW has had major art style shifts.
Mind you, I'd posit that XIV's graphics remaining fairly consistent in terms of fidelity over the years will be a boon now that they're planning to overhaul it.
Imagine if it had been dramatically upgraded every expansion like with WoW and now they had to juggle that difference and try to create parity. Nightmare.
As another anon already stated: it's the XIV overworld that is the worst in most cases.
The dungeons are actually pretty good, and I think it has to do with the fact that they have persistent lighting. They don't need a day-night cycle, they just need to look good in the one moment they're stuck in, and they do.

Agreed. XIV does offer many more unique animations while WoW just has the same like 3 or 4. I think XIV rarely recycles animations for abilities. This also applies to mounted positions. XIV has sidesaddle, standing perched on the mount, hanging from the side of the mount, holding reins with one hand, etc.

Surprisingly yeah XIV only very, VERY rarely recycles animations for non-job actions, and some of them are upcycled animations from jobs to begin with like Reprisal being a Dark Knight action when it was first introduced.

You can find anything in the balmung quicksand. You won't find me there though. Even if I were there, my character is pretty vanilla by futa standards.
If you want a lore-friendly tribal male suncat name it's the only option besides a 'Wyrmblood' esque epithet or doing a soft versiom of vieras' city name system which none of the NPCs do.
You can't be a Nunh and an adventurer/away from a Big 26 single letter tribe for significant periods of time at the same time, you'll be replaced as if you were challenged and triumphed over. If you need it in coomer terms, Tia's who leave the tribe's lands can get more pussy anyway. And even within the tribes Nunhs are almost never leaders.

XIV has the exact same social issues as WoW except the player base acts more gay and faux-nice.
The only decent, truly social experiences I've had in modern mmos were in GW2, Albion, and Classic WoW, and that's because they all actually force you to rely on other people frequently, unlike XIV and retail WoW where you can essentially solo everything outside of literal endgame content.

No one is actually "nice" in XIV. Real niceness is like people helping you kill an elite or do a quest, and both retail WoW and XIV are so simple and easy that it never necessitates that kind of vulnerability or cooperation. They're just zoomer solo games with coop raids.

XIV might have higher res textures and some higher poly models, but the actual environmental design and shit is much worse than WoW. This is to say nothing about the other parts of the games, but it's true.
XIV has some legitimately abhorrent-looking places like the Ruby Sea, Garlemald, and Ala Mhigo that pale in comparison to the enviroments in Battle for Azeroth or Legion, let alone Dragonlands. Compared to GW2 or ESO, they look even worse. I'd go so far as to say the enviromental design in XIV is its weakest aspect.

FFXIV beats WoW in both graphical fidelity and style, although style is subject to one's own personal taste. With FFXIV 7.0 the graphical fidelity will be improved upon, not sure if WoW has ever had or will ever have the same treatment, I only played it a short while a few years ago, and from looking at recent footage it looks no different than it did back then.
WoW only ever updated the characters across the board and sometimes updates an old npc model for a new expansion (like gnolls) that they then backport. Besides that, it's a gradual improvement only to newer stuff, so new zones look better each expansion (though they tend to plateau a lot more lately) while 10 year old zones look way different.
Maybe one day they'll do a major overhaul by using new assets and planting them in old stuff.
It's pretty insane how much of a difference just different lighting and material makes if you look at 1.0 vs 2.0. And that's just one of may upgrades 7.0 will see.

as a guy who has played both WoW and FFXIV, I don't see how its even controversial that WoW has better enviroments. Duskwood was made two decades ago and it blows everything in FFXIV out of the water. Not just in how it looks, but how its designed,with multi-level crypts as a mini dungeon crawl. Around mists of pandaria the zone design went to shit. In terms of gear, however, wow looks okay in classic at the latest and already looks like shit in TBC (giant glowy crystal pauldrons xF).
In terms of homosexualry, WoW is basically bioware tier at this point. It was also never based. I don't even remember anything about the dumb plot except everyone and everything is incredibly gay. FFXIV is pretty inconsistant / retconned between xpacs, but each xpac taken as its own work is pretty damn good.

Yeah, I've never played WoW. XI and XIV have been my main MMOs since each of them came out. But every time I see a WoW zone I get very interested. I get urges to play the game just to go walk around the world and explore. Luckily I know it's otherwise garbage so I won't do that, but if XIV could take anything from WoW it would be the world design. I want to be able to walk across all of Eorzea, not just small segments of it.

Came here to say this, when I started playing XIV I was disappointed by how the zones look. The cities are alright but the environments are barebones. Also it's noticeable in comparison how WoW also has set color schemes for everything whereas XIV has this grayish semi-realistic look.
I like the weather conditions in FFXIV though.

I dunno how bad WoW has gotten since I unsubbed but my first experience when I made the mistake of visiting FF's Balmung I was greeted with some gays in Ul'dah's chat talking about transitioning.
Having said that, they seem to be contained in some servers. I've been playing in Diabolos for a year and save the occassional troony from other server promoting his degenerate house parties in Limsa Lominsa, I've yet to see people being openly gays be it in the world map, dungeons or high level cities like Sharlayan.

Need to think of something to cover the built in light as well as the two mossy areas from oriental waterflows below.
I always dislike lowered ceilings because they make camera control utter arse when you're inside. You can make interiors that look great on screenshots but for hanging out with friends vanilla ceilings are the best.
the ceiling isn't lowered, the floor is raised. Pendant wall light seems to be one of the better buys in terms of light output per furnishing slot.

It's because those zones were created first, then they wrote a story to exist within those zones. Expansion zones write a story first and then create zones to act as set pieces for cutscenes.

WoW has way better zones. Far more foliage, doodads, treasures, enemy activity, etc. But to XIV's credit they are overhauling textures, foliage, lighting, doodads, etc in 7.0 which shows they have an extremely long term plan for the game. Needs to be seen.
Did Yoshida say if they planned to show the graphics overhaul at the first fanfest? I think us Americans deserve the first taste of the meal, as such.
They're both dated but in different ways. FFXIV has kept the same art style since the start but the technical graphics have changed with the level of detail and lighting of the different areas between new and old even with the engine being updated.
WoW's graphics are considerably more dated due to the heavy art style changes over time where you can can definitely tell the general design aesthetic and philosophy has changed over time with the technology.
So FFXIV is dated in its own way due to the general aesthetics being the same since launch for characters while WoW is more dated in a classical sense.
FFXIV is also a 13 year old game that draws from the modern FF aesthetics while WoW is a 19 year old game that draws from Warcraft 1-3. WoW takes a much larger leap in aesthetics while FFXIV is still Modern Final Fantasy.
TLDR:FF has more technical dating while WoW has style dating because FFXIV has the exact same aesthetics while WoW has had major art style shifts.
Mind you, I'd posit that XIV's graphics remaining fairly consistent in terms of fidelity over the years will be a boon now that they're planning to overhaul it.
Imagine if it had been dramatically upgraded every expansion like with WoW and now they had to juggle that difference and try to create parity. Nightmare.

The dungeons are actually pretty good, and I think it has to do with the fact that they have persistent lighting. They don't need a day-night cycle, they just need to look good in the one moment they're stuck in, and they do.

Agreed. XIV does offer many more unique animations while WoW just has the same like 3 or 4. I think XIV rarely recycles animations for abilities. This also applies to mounted positions. XIV has sidesaddle, standing perched on the mount, hanging from the side of the mount, holding reins with one hand, etc.
He was being very glib about how excited he was to show off the graphics update soon at Fanfest, or something like that.
Surprisingly yeah XIV only very, VERY rarely recycles animations for non-job actions, and some of them are upcycled animations from jobs to begin with like Reprisal being a Dark Knight action when it was first introduced.

If you want a lore-friendly tribal male suncat name it's the only option besides a 'Wyrmblood' esque epithet or doing a soft versiom of vieras' city name system which none of the NPCs do.
You can't be a Nunh and an adventurer/away from a Big 26 single letter tribe for significant periods of time at the same time, you'll be replaced as if you were challenged and triumphed over. If you need it in coomer terms, Tia's who leave the tribe's lands can get more pussy anyway. And even within the tribes Nunhs are almost never leaders.

I've played xiv for about 6 years and I've never interacted with other players deeper than surface level.
XIV has the exact same social issues as WoW except the player base acts more gay and faux-nice.
The only decent, truly social experiences I've had in modern mmos were in GW2, Albion, and Classic WoW, and that's because they all actually force you to rely on other people frequently, unlike XIV and retail WoW where you can essentially solo everything outside of literal endgame content.

XIV might have higher res textures and some higher poly models, but the actual environmental design and shit is much worse than WoW. This is to say nothing about the other parts of the games, but it's true.
XIV has some legitimately abhorrent-looking places like the Ruby Sea, Garlemald, and Ala Mhigo that pale in comparison to the enviroments in Battle for Azeroth or Legion, let alone Dragonlands. Compared to GW2 or ESO, they look even worse. I'd go so far as to say the enviromental design in XIV is its weakest aspect.

FFXIV beats WoW in both graphical fidelity and style, although style is subject to one's own personal taste. With FFXIV 7.0 the graphical fidelity will be improved upon, not sure if WoW has ever had or will ever have the same treatment, I only played it a short while a few years ago, and from looking at recent footage it looks no different than it did back then.
WoW only ever updated the characters across the board and sometimes updates an old npc model for a new expansion (like gnolls) that they then backport. Besides that, it's a gradual improvement only to newer stuff, so new zones look better each expansion (though they tend to plateau a lot more lately) while 10 year old zones look way different.
Maybe one day they'll do a major overhaul by using new assets and planting them in old stuff.
It's pretty insane how much of a difference just different lighting and material makes if you look at 1.0 vs 2.0. And that's just one of may upgrades 7.0 will see.
