Never played Half Life. I was going to play 1 & 2 but I see there's many games under the franchise on Steam. Which ones are worth playing?

try 1 and if you like that then play the expansions. if you don't like 1 then change to 2 if you like that then play the expansions for that
Wait til there's a sale on the collection. Then play HL1 and its expansions, then HL2 and its expansions. That's an order!
This one is affordable. Does this cover all the playworthy games in the series?
Yes. The only other entries are Lost Coast which is free, and Half-Life: Decay which is PlayStation-Exclusive.
get rid of half life source and team fortress classic and you are good
excuse my moronation i didnt see that it was a bundle and thought you were all of them seperately
What is source? I will give it a run through even if it's mediocre just for the lore. Should I play source after HL1 or..?
HL1, OpFor, 2, Ep1+2. Blue Shift is okay but it seems too similar to 1 for me
It's just 1 on the source engine
source is regular half-life 1 but on source engine. It is genuinely inferior experience to the original with tons of glitches and weird choices and i dont understand why they did it other than to "show off" source engine

half-life 1, blue shift, opposing force, half-life 2, episodes, hunt down the freeman
play uplink
then play PS2 half life
then play ps2 decay
then opfor
skip blue shift
play half life 2 but only the original collectors edition
skip episode 1
skip episode 2
play black mesa if you are bored to death
>uplink
God this game is so fricking good. Not the HL whatever, but the leet haxing game. Even the music is perfect.
beat HL1 then play as much of Blue Shift as you want, if you don't finish it move into Opposing Force, which is really fricking good. after that obviously playthrough HL2, Episode 1 and 2 all in order. then it's really just fanmade mods after that. Theres a remake for HL1 called Black Mesa, there's a few story driven mods for HL1 and 2 that are essentially just "more half life" but the most interesting mods are the horror ones. Like Cry of Fear, Afraid of Monsters and there's a few others that i forget.
I think this is the chronology I'll follow while playing considering reviews in this thread.
glad i could help anon
The order of the goldsrc games doesn't matter too much. They happen simultaneously in the chronology. 2 and the episodes are linearly told and happen after the goldsrc games. Alyx exists to patch up the canon after Marc Laidlaw leaked an ending he was sure was never going to happen and references the end of episode 2, so it's last.
>order doesn't matter
I see... Gonna get started on 1 and expansions now. I don't know why it took me this long to finally play this game. I used to watch my friends older bro play it when I was a kid. I was too busy having esex on WoW.
Release order is the safest. In this case the stories only cross paths as passing references that you will understand in context eventually anyway.

play hl1
play hl2 and episodes
try opfor but its way overrated
look into the other stuff if you want more
alternatively any HL1 stuff can be played for free on Sven co op but it's not a true HL1 experience due to multplayer and the rebalancing that goes along with it
>try opfor but its way overrated
fight me right now you homosexual
terrible taste having motherfricker
I'll put you in the ground and throw bugs at your corpse
new weapons and enemies are cool but its boring and the level design is honestly worse than blue shift and vanilla
also the squad AI is laughable
black mesa
blue shift
opposing force

Food analogy: Half-Life is the manga. Black Mesa is the anime with references that you wont understand because it was made for people that read the mango.
It appears the containment system has completely failed.
Half-Life
Half-Life: Opposing Force
Half-Life: Blue Shift
Half-Life 2
Half-Life 2 Episode One
Half-Life 2 Episode Two
There's your order
>half life 1 (not source, the original)
>blue shift
>opposing force
>2
>episode 1
>episode 2
>black mesa
Play them all in order, then play Black Mesa, and please don't play the source version of HL1. Now, go, and please play them all on the hardest difficulty.
I won't be playing source, maybe in a year or two as a replay I will. Of course hard mode all day, I'm not 12 anymore. Hopefully this game is a challenge.
Half Life 1, Half Life Opposing Force, Half Life Blue Shift
Then you move onto the second series.
Half Life 2, Half Life 2 Episode One, Half Life Two Episode Two
Also, play Black Mesa after you're entirely done. Redone Half-Life in Source engine and is really good but a whole lot different from the original.
What does the G in Gman stand for?
The G stands for Gamer.
Gordon
Gay man
All of them, in release order.
Yes, that includes the original 1998 Half-Life 1.
Avoid the "Source" de-make, and do not play Black Mesa before finishing rest of the series.
