Cope. Unless you’re making money off of music then it’s a waste. Learn a valuable skill like carpentry or shooting.

Cope. You will never justify time wasted on carpentry, economically it's more logical to just buy furniture
You will never shoot anyone outside designated ranges which is just videogames for men with small penises.

              >it's cheaper to buy meat at the store
The cheapest way to buy meat per lb is order an animal directly from a farm and have it butchered. Hunting is a similar story depending on which animal you're shooting. That's especially true if you aren't some city slicker who has to go to a meme hunting resort. If you know how to butcher, it's even cheaper.

There's zero chance hunting saves money unless you live innawoods. The time it takes you to drive to the range is the time I made enough money to buy a dozen steaks.

Actual hunter here. First of all, it depends what you're hunting, trapping, foraging.

With hunting there is a big initial investment, for camo, firearms, ammo, other stuff you may need, but after that all you really pay for is a tag.

With a whitetail deer, which is the most popular animal in America to hunt, You'll get about 50lbs of meat for Roughly 50$ if you include ammo, the gas to drive somewhere to go hunting unless you already live there like me, and a tag.

Obviously there are cheap hunts and expensive hunts. If you're flying on a bushplane to go into Alaska and kill a Caribou during the great Caribou migration, that'll cost you more than if you trap or hunt bunny rabbits in your back yard with a .22LR or bow & arrow

This is correct. Of course the purpose of any patrician hobby should not be to "save money", that almost by definition makes it not patrician.

It's not about cost, it's about learning a skill in the event things go bad and also hearing the scream of an animal as you exact your will over it

                >No amount of prepping will save you from a nuclear holocaust

Why the frick are we talking about a "nuclear holocaust"?
Let's just say the dollar completely collapses and we can't keep cutting limitless checks to feed brown people, law enforcement is overwhelmed and it's hard to get food. Watts riots, George Floyd nonsense, covid-level shortages everywhere as mass looting and a lack of law enforcement have basically made getting shit dangerous to impossible.

Then sitting on a farm, many miles from urban youth, with plenty of food in the cellar and chickens I'm raising, nice bustling garden is pretty nice.

Nuke-wise, under 500 or even 2,000 warheads hitting the US large parts of the country are going to be untouched or minimally affected. If you're not within or right next to a major city or military base you're not going to be vaporized. Then it'd mostly be a matter of staying inside a radiation-protected area with filtered air for a few days to weeks to avoid fallout. Radiation from an atomic blast drops off dramatically both as a function of distance from the blast epicenter and time.

You can adjust for larger bombs today, but point is you can have a massive nuclear strike that kills hundreds of millions of people but doesn't touch you if you're just a bit away from really big targets.

The time it takes to build a shed/shack, buy the materials is really not that much. Like 8 hours? Maybe an extra hour or so for painting, which if its treated lumber you won't have to anyways. Plus it feels great to work with your hands and build something good and sturdy.

I wouldn't consider it a hobby as much as "DIY" in and of itself is a hobby. I take pride in my home, and don't mind having it finely tuned, Shit breaks, I fix it. I see something I can do that can increase sweat equity, I do it to make more money on the eventual sale. We see something that we want to change and process improve if you will--then I'll improve upon it and do a project. What I particularly enjoy is burning calories while customizing my home or fixing my home and having it work as intended, nothing better than having my lawn mowed, a bunch of shit on the honey-do list checked off, fixing something that was busted for a few days, and enjoying a nice meal with the family after a nice shower. I guess I just like being busy and productive. Carpentry can be helpful, as can plumbing skills, and painting skills, and landscaping/gardening skills when you are talking about the meta.

homie, I actually do carpentry as a hobby. It's good in the sense I can do simple home repairs, but I am waaaaaaay net negative on $, even after rebuilding a deck and a porch in my house.

You know how much wood costs? Are you stealing from construction sites? Stock 2x4x88 are $5 each. Plywood is like $30 a sheet. Forget if you want nicer wood like oak or cedar you will be paying $15+ a beam.

What are you cutting that wood with anon? Are you really using a skil saw on some horses? Even that will cost you $150+. Of course you are using a table saw which start at $300. You probably habe a miter saw too for those angle cuts. Another $400. Then there's drills, clamps (corner clamp costs $40), nail guns....... You did know you need at least two different nail guns right anon?

Wow this hobby really makes me a lot of money. So glad I never learned how to play an instrument. Then I'd have to buy one and derive pleasure from it for years. What a money sink

Yeah most hobbies have a vocal minority of ubernerds. Blame lies on the nerds not the hobbies themselves though. A lot of "hobbies" are really just a very niche type of consoomption. Watches for example, hardly anyone is building custom watches, hacking them, restoring them etc. it's mostly people just buying watches and talking about how much they want to buy whatever tudor/rolex they can't get on the list for.

IMO hobbies are healthy and beneficial if you have a goal in mind. If not then you're kind of just dicking around and missing out on some life gainz.
              >play guitar? make a goal to play "insert song" from memory
              >ham radio? make a goal to make a contact with a ham from "insert continent"
              >firearms? I want to shoot a sub moa group at 150yds with "insert rifle" from the bench
If you can't define an actionable goal then it's not a hobby, just consoomption.

Actionable goals are preferred, are all actionable goals desirable? I think it kind of still gets weird at some point.

Like using a radio to reach people in 7 continents? Like you know, that's kind of cool.

Every country? Every state? City? I dunno man. Exactly where it gets weird I won't say precisely, there's a range ift "well I think it's weird but I'm glad you're working hard at something that keeps you busy" but there's some point it still gets really truly weird.

A worthwhile hobby would be to “learn piano”. You’ll never totally “master” the piano (you’ll probably never be the best piano player in the world). But the pursuit of perfection is about the journey, not the destination. In order to make progress, you set goals, which gives you the dopamine you crave as you attain these goals and master new pieces of piano music. It’s something that can last a lifetime if you find that you love it.

I know, but it’s still statistically possible to be the best piano player in the world (if all the best players all died spontaneously or something). But yeah if you like piano music and the idea of playing it, you should learn how to play, even if you’ll never be the best player in the world. If it makes you happy that’s all that matters

Kek. Based Jim. I wonder how I could get into that hobby.

In fact, theremay be yet another kind of temporal anticipation, implying notthe clicks for clips but the climax of clips: cases in which the jerking off viewer tries to ‘synchronize’ his orgasm with a cum shot in the clip. I can offer no empirical data on this phenomenon, but anecdotal evidence from a couple of porn users I have talked to indicates that it is rather common. In this case the parallel ejaculations constitute a kind of double closure: the diegetic climax ending the mini-narrative within the clip; and the climax of the jerking off viewer in front of the screen.

If we combine this desire for ‘synchronization’ with the aforementioned search for the new, better and more satisfying clip, we end up with an interesting scenario. Since every search comes to its end when the porn consumer finally and for whatever reasons chooses his last clip, the thrilling anticipation of the search disappears, while suddenly a new kind of thrill erupts. Will the clip end with an ejaculation? And will the cum shot be a satisfying one?

Even if there is a quantitative dominance of cum-shot clips on Internet sites like YouPorn, obviously not every clip contains an ejaculation, let alone a satisfying one. Now, for the ‘synchronizing’ user the time line of the clip that was (at least temporarily) deemed satisfying enough will move inexorably from left to right. Since for him this clip can only be the last one if it turns out reasonably satisfying and it will be satisfying only when it ends with a cum shot, he will hope for a suspension of time the closer the timeline approaches its end so that a cum shot can still fit in the remaining time slot. But the more he hopes for this suspension of time and the arrival of the cum shot, the denser and more intense his time experience will be. This specific phenomenology of time is not unlike the one we know from scenes of suspense (for the phenomenology of time in two types of suspense, see Hanich 2010a).

Do you work in an office? Because I think the people who price you out of you being their friends might have different tastes.

I work from home. I hunt, fish, and garden during working hours. I'm in IT Security which basically means I work 2 hours a day, go to 1 meeting for daily stand up, and bullshit everything. No one actually does any work or knows what they're doing. I used to work really hard but I kinda capped my salary at 135,000$/year. I realized if I put on mousejiggle and caffiene and sign into Teams on my personal PC I always stay green. I get my work done, and my boss does the same thing. No one cares. Millenials getting into management was the best thing to ever happen. No one has to drive in, no one does bullshit busy work anymore.

Either way, I made a change and tried to become the chad I wanted to be in life. I play with my kids, take them outside every day weather permitting. Wife and I cook home cooked meals, we both head to the gym. Typically after they go to bed we read books or frick, occaisionally watch a movie, or do projects around the house. We bought a fixer upper for 220,000$ and right now its valued at half a million. We also own 80 acres in a rural part of my state so that takes a bit of time and maintenance as well. My goal is to raise outdoor kids in an inside world, and hunt, fish, and garden my family into living off the land as much as possible. Its impossible to be 100%, but goal is around 85%.

Either way, video games are a waste of time, especially the ones you don't play with others. I can understand doing them every so often like a board game with friends.

Ideally the interactive aspect will add to the experience in ways linear media cannot. Unfortunately a lot of videogames defect to using smoke and mirrors to merely make the player feel as if their choices matter when they don't which supports what you're saying, but for a good videogame that really shouldn't be the case.
If you're actually asking that and are a nonfiction reader, try the book "Hamlet on the Holodeck". It explains the value of interactive media far better than I can.

I actually make around 1,000,000 a year and work as a professional actor. It could be more but I hardly do any work since most of the time I'm not actually at a shoot. My big break was talking to an exec I randomly met in an elevator when I overheard him saying he played the latest triple A release which I also played. Now I own multiple beach front properties and have a harem of women with around 15 or so kids total- all of them go to expensive private schools and love their papa.
Reading your thing... Like major OOF. Should have played videogames. Just yesterday I met a manager for a bigger company while playing an online shooter, we were both like the highest rank and us fragging together created a bond in between us. He's now offering me to work with his company which will earn me something like 5M a year, but I dunno I'm not so poor I need that kind of thing. I might actually have to work like an average of 4 days a month instead of my current 3 days a month, but he is offering an exclusive entrance pass to Epistien Island's spiritual successor so there's that.

I'm just trying to paint a picture of why something like learning to play a guitar at 34 or spending 3 hours on MarioKart is a massive waste of time for me. I could care less what you people think of me. From what I've gathered, most people here are autistic fatsos living with their mom in their 30s. I'm just here to try to help you guys while I'm bored in this meeting.

You clearly need to come to Ganker to brag about your life when you start going on and on about your salary and home value and all that shit in completely unrelated threads. Keep pretending like your life isn’t empty though. Sorry your work from home life has clearly made you not have any friends outside of your wife and kids

I wasn't bragging. I don't make that much money. In fact I'm embarrassed I make so little. I'm the poorest one out of my friends. As far as the home, I was encouraging other anons to get into Ganker as a hobby and pouring some sweat equity into their home

Unless they're european, in which case they're probably butthurt since they'll never own a home unless they inherit it and have to live in a 'flat' their entire lives.

In practical terms, yes. Humanity has abundance of specialists in virtually every field willing to lend their services for affordable price. It's much better to spend money on skilled labor than to waste time learning it yourself, then waste time doing it yourself, so you can save up and spend money on goyslop and goytertainment

They're all a waste of time but other than survival and procreation that's pretty much all there is to life. You could argue that reading classical literature improves your intellectual ability (if only superficially) that can potentially benefit you. Lifting has obvious benefits to an extent.

Drinking, smoking, and porn aren’t hobbies lol. Listening to music makes you cultured and more interesting, along with learning an instrument; this is coming from a guy who only knows pop songs and gets laughed at when I don’t know the trendy artists and don’t get invited to venues (+social points). Also learning an instrument is great as you can pass it on to your kid.

I would also disagree on your carpentry statement as it is very expensive hobby, some tools are expensive and the price of lumber is way too high nowadays.

Shooting is alright, not really that interesting as anyone can do it.

A hobby that makes you interesting and helps with gains are usually sports related. I recommend snowboarding and surfing for social and physical gains, and basketball or football - basketball very easy to make friends through pick up. Also golf for later life as most men over 30 start golf who are rich and successful - good for networking.

    >listening to music and reading are bad hobbies
what the hell is wrong with people

first, delineate hobbies, habits, and addictions. i think that video games or board games as a hobby can be healthy, video games as a habit/addiction is unhealthy. drinking can be a hobby, and is probably not a good hobby, but is a terrible habit; same with smoking. weed tends to become a hobby with those who make it a habit. Ganker is a much a habit for all of us here, clearly. other social media is the same.
as a note, somehow music and books made the list of bad habits, but youtube/films didn't. my guess? you got filtered by rainbow 6 and instead just want to watch jack reacher and shooter over and over between new milsurp EDC videos.

OP doesn't understand intrinsic rewards, just extrinsic carrots dangled in front of him to keep him continuously sacrificing his effort/time/joy to keep Mr. Shekelstein free to pursue his own 'pointless' hobbies.
Money is a means to an end, and I just use it to get me more stuff that is intrinsically rewarding. Yes it feels nice getting more, but that's just because all progress feels good. If you start classifying things with intrinsic enjoyment as a 'waste of time' your brain follows suit and you literally lose the ability to enjoy them at all. These bitter, resentful people reach retirement after years of striving and suffering and then succumb to boredom and existential despair after a few years as they don't know what to do with themselves.
Enjoying things is a skill, and it needs to be practiced continuously or be lost.

Absolutely moronic and KYS. There is plenty of fiction that teaches you about life, how to be a man, how to act, the importance of courage, camaraderie, how to think about death, etc. A lot of the greatest pieces of literature are not essays.

    >Consolation of Philosophy
    >Divine Comedy
    >The Death of Ivan Ilyich
    >Macbeth

        >Normal people just do things they enjoy and also spend time with their friends.
Normal people just get drunk with a group of people they are acquainted with and claim these people are their friends and not just an excuse to use alcohol to forget their problems.

The issue is a lot of lonely guys have this weird perception that they are missing out on what they think male friendships should be. They seem to think having friends is some hollywood comedy flick borderline homosexual bromance type thing or an anime big brother friend relationship.

They are emotional leeches, believe me I've tried to befriend these types of guys before and they always end up being fricking weirdos who get passive aggressive and start hating you when you shut down their "deep" conversations about how they are still butthurt about being an outcast in high school or whatever.

        >I can’t believe people need to be told that learning a fricking instrument or READING is ok as a hobby.

Everyone who needs to talk about their hobby, especially not to people engaged in their hobby is seeking validation for their hobby.

playing an instrument and being into music in general is god-tier

    >cheap as frick to get into (but scales up well with income if you need to fill a void through wanton consooming)
    >whether you're a sperg or a social butterfly, it's a great conduit for socializing (but being an schizoid shut-in is fine too)
    >let's you connect with your feelings and express yourself on an axis separate from verbal language
    >if you're rabbinically-inclined you can have lots of fun trading gear shalom
    >or you can learn to fix shit and be hands-on if that's your roll
    >you're not bound by externalities, you can partake in it pretty much anywhere and at any time. frick, if you're autistic enough you can use audiation or solfege to compose in your head no instruments required.

    and most important of all

I'm learning Gwyn's theme on classic guitar, it's so beautiful
Imagine being so autistic learning stuff like this feels useless because it doesn't produce israeli green pieces of paper

Liberal Black folk/Euros in here afraid of shooting. It is your job as a free American male to own and be proficient with modern weaponry.

Everyone on Ganker saying "Black person" in every thread, meanwhile they are renting in some shithole Black person city so they be victims of the BLM murders when the Great Depression 2.0 finally drops.

Be fit, be good at shooting, and be self-reliant.

What's the most physically demanding gun to operate? I'm talking forearm, shoulder, back gains. I want something that less strong men would literally injure themselves using.

    >I don't really like music. Like its okay, but I usually listen to podcasts or talk radio or drive in silence. I don't exactly put it on when I'm cooking or something. I like it like to pull out emotions. I don't mind it in a movie

That being said most instruments are not Ganker activities. Most of us were playing sports while you were a band geek. I don't care if you play instruments, but there are definitely more fit hobbies. I never really got it tbh, IDK, I guess I just don't like music enough to go and try and play a guitar. I've just always used that free time to make money or workout or play sports

    instruments
Learning instruments improves your motor skills, memory, and is a great social activity for you to hang out with other musicians and make music together.
