This. I fricking hate that microsoft came along and did the a/b/x/y backwards and forever made those button prompts confusing as frick. Every time I see one I have to try and remember whether it's nintendo or micro layout. They couldn't use different icons or at least keep them in consistent places?
>backwards
They put X and Y on the correct axis and A B in left-to-right alphabetical order like that should be tho?? shitendo is the one that had it backwards.
Why didn't they just use ABCD anyway? it's like they intentionally wanted things to end up confusing, although i largely blame PC devs for using XBOX buttons as standard when they shouldn't.
>PC devs for using XBOX buttons as standard
You realize until about 2007 PC gamepads were a complete mess, right?
AssCreed 1 had prompts like "Button 5" or "Button 0" and you had figure out what they were.
Basically this. PS layout is the only one that looks recognizable just by looking at it. Wish Xbox adopted something else rather than just reversing Nintendo layout.
As someone who pretty much only plays RPGs I love this layout
There's a controller by Retro Fighters which is similar to an Xbox controller but it's got that layout which I use since the D-pad on the GC controller is shit
this is the best thing nintendo ever did and they were moronic to get rid of it
Overrated. It's either a perfect layout or the absolute worst layout depending on the game. I'd rather have the more consistent standard diamond shape or the cool Sega 6 button layout over it.
>play Metroid prime on GC >have to press Y while holding A to shoot super missile >keep getting accidental X press turning into morphball instead
This literally never happened to me with any other controllers
How the frick are you accidentally hitting X in that scenario on a Gamecube controller of all things? It's the one controller with a button layout that should make hitting the wrong button in that scenario impossible.
Playstation, but it doesn't matter, only a moronic plays looking at the buttons, the last time I did it I was like 6-7 years old. I automatically translate they to "upper button" "right button" "left button" and "bottom button (kek)"
Because they would have started a trend that would lead to dual analog controls being dropped.
Having more than one analog stick was a brief novelty in 5th and 6th gen, but it was obvious that it couldn't really do all that much, you can use an analog stick to quickly move a character in a smooth circle, but there isn't an equivalent sales pitch for the right analog stick. Once gyro became feasible for controllers we should have just moved towards more face buttons or some other experimental features.
Have you noticed how console games have been the same slop for four generations?
That's because the controllers have been the same for four generations. Controller complexity is directly tied to gameplay complexity.
Have you ever actually used gyro? You need the right stick still for wider faster turns. Like "flicking" the mouse. You use the gyro for fine tuned honing in on your target, like "tracking" motions
Dropping the 6 button layout was always bizarre tbh. They had C and Z in the Maple device API as well as a 'D' button, some third party controllers had a C and Z that worked separately from the triggers and were even supported in certain games.
Pressing Z in SA1 makes the character stare at the player (can't find good video).
>ungodly expensive
I was pretty much at this point when looking for one but then thought frick it and got a picrel for £40 instead. Awkward layout but remapped it in x360ce so whatever.
[...]
[...]
Problem is, these are ungodly rare and expensive on the aftermarket. Plus I'd like the option for 2.4ghz like what 8bitdo's current NGCD pad is.
I have this controller. The d-pad is unusable and the square opening for the sticks is bizarre. But I've never seen another controller with this many individually mappable buttons.
Why the hell do Nintendo and Xbox controllers have to have different button placements for the ABXY buttons? Fricks with my muscle memory whenever I have to switch between them.
Well you see, it all goes back to the NES and Sega Genesis. The original Genesis controller has 'A' 'B' and 'C' listed from left to right. But the NES had the A button on the right because it was closer to the edge and therefore your thumb and so 'A' was to denote it as the primary button. Then when Street Fighter caught on Sega released the 6-button pad with 'X' 'Y' and 'Z' on the top row, again from left to right. So when Nintendo did the SNES they used X and Y from right to left, with L and R to compensate for the six total buttons needed for street fighter. Then we come to the Dreamcast which just cut off the C and Z buttons from the previous layout. Now Xbox was basically just the Dreamcast 2 (Windows NT kernel, focus on online functionality, memory card in the controller, everything). So Xbox copied the Dreamcast controller. That's why they appear mirrored on the y=-x axis
That is actually a good kwestion. I like the six button curved layout SEGA did, but I also prefer colored shapes to letters. One of them definitely has to be orange.
>a on the right when you have no right analog stick >a on the bottom when you do
You need to reach a asap, which is the reason why sony went from o for confirmation to x. The steam controllers layout was hilariously moronic
Have you noticed how console games have been the same slop for four generations?
That's because the controllers have been the same for four generations. Controller complexity is directly tied to gameplay complexity.
Having 6 face buttons available is nice, but what makes it really kino for games that don't use them all is having 3 buttons aligned horizontally per row.
>use latin script alphabet where every language that uses it is read left to right >nintendo puts them right to left because that's how nips read their own language >puts x on the y-axis and y on the x-axis
Yeah nah they fricked up and others fixed it. Plus shapes are way cooler than gay letters.
I was thinking the same thing, but I'll probably just end up soldering mechanical switches to a HORI Fighting Commander instead because it has shoulder and trigger buttons
[...]
Overrated. It's either a perfect layout or the absolute worst layout depending on the game. I'd rather have the more consistent standard diamond shape or the cool Sega 6 button layout over it.
>You can effectively get GameCube layout on any 6 button controller if you just ignore the two top corner buttons.
Why this isn't selectable in the fricking options is beyond me. They did this for Asian PS4s and it worked because games had binds to "accept" and "cancel" buttons and they automatically respected your choice. This should've been the case worldwide for PS5.
Now you've got fricked up controls in games like Ys X that were clearly designed with O for confirm in mind. It's like that on Switch, where A is confirm and B is jump, but on PS5 it's reversed with X for confirm and O for jump, it drives me crazy. Good that you can rebind the in-game controls in Ys, but the confirm/cancel is unchangeable. The solution I came up with was to change the controls in-game AND then use the accessibility settings to revert X and O.
Fricking unnecessarily complicated and nonsensical. And doesn't work/fricks up the controls for games that don't let you rebind the buttons.
If you need to look at the controller when playing anything but dreamcast games like sonic shuffle where you can use it to hide your cards you should quit gaming.
My dream is the buttons be labeled after directions N,E,S,W. When you use multi-platforms and you get a "X" flashing on the screen, I die the first time.
I don't give a frick, I just wish they were all completely different or completely identical. All 3 big boys have an X and they're all in different locations for frick's sake.
Why is Sony a colossal Black person and never made a PS3 (and beyond) official wired controller? I just can't play KH, DS, or emulated shit for the Onions box without using their controller. It feels so fricking weird and sinful.
Why tho?
The colors on the current Xbox buttons are practically non-distinct compared to the OG and 360 buttons, even moreso of you have some special edition controller.

>Axis
That doesn't matter for buttons, moron. You have sticks and a D-pad for that.
yeah it does Black person, no reason to use X and Y over Y Z if you aren't referring to axis.
If it was correct then it would be A B on top and X Y on bottom. We don't read bottom to top you moron.
Sega had been using A B C X Y Z since the 80s you bollocks. Microsoft was also using them in the 90s on their Sidewinder pads.
Why didn't they just use ABCD anyway? it's like they intentionally wanted things to end up confusing, although i largely blame PC devs for using XBOX buttons as standard when they shouldn't.
>PC devs for using XBOX buttons as standard

AssCreed 1 had prompts like "Button 5" or "Button 0" and you had figure out what they were.
Nintendo almost went ABCD with SNES. But that wouldn't have changed what sega did.
>we nearly had X and Y on the correct axes
bros...
Top right is ideal.
Nintendo's A and B make sense to me, but the X/Y placement is weird and I always confuse them when playing on the Switch.
Its because of how japanese is written
Basically this. PS layout is the only one that looks recognizable just by looking at it. Wish Xbox adopted something else rather than just reversing Nintendo layout.
Word. It's the perfect button layout in the perfect controller layout.
Agreed and I'm not a Sony fan in pretty much any way
Xbox 360 era
Can you handle my extremely quirky answer?
Nintendo, japanese play station
Terrible
As someone who pretty much only plays RPGs I love this layout
There's a controller by Retro Fighters which is similar to an Xbox controller but it's got that layout which I use since the D-pad on the GC controller is shit
This is ideal for playing jrpgs, shame the cube had so few.
Anyways, SNES had the best controller.
This layout with a nice clicky dpad would be perfect for me
Overrated. It's either a perfect layout or the absolute worst layout depending on the game. I'd rather have the more consistent standard diamond shape or the cool Sega 6 button layout over it.
You're right, it is nice for some games though, but i'd prefer a playstation style controller with 6 face buttons myself
>play Metroid prime on GC
>have to press Y while holding A to shoot super missile
>keep getting accidental X press turning into morphball instead
This literally never happened to me with any other controllers
How the frick are you accidentally hitting X in that scenario on a Gamecube controller of all things? It's the one controller with a button layout that should make hitting the wrong button in that scenario impossible.
because they put x lower than y when its usually the opposite on nintendo controllers. its fricked
ur dum
Have you considered not having ham fingers?
Very underrated face buttons but the rest of the controller is fricked up.
>c stick is weird
>no z2
>can't click thumb sticks
>no select
Playstation, but it doesn't matter, only a moronic plays looking at the buttons, the last time I did it I was like 6-7 years old. I automatically translate they to "upper button" "right button" "left button" and "bottom button (kek)"
those are all too shallow
why did they drop the extra 2 face buttons?
should have become standard, shit would be so handy to have
because it was more convenient to have those up
They just moved them to the shoulders
Because they would have started a trend that would lead to dual analog controls being dropped.
Having more than one analog stick was a brief novelty in 5th and 6th gen, but it was obvious that it couldn't really do all that much, you can use an analog stick to quickly move a character in a smooth circle, but there isn't an equivalent sales pitch for the right analog stick. This.

What's the difference between the Xbox and Dreamcast layouts?
Even is just the Saturn layout except B/W instead of C/Z.
There isn't. Xbox was like a successor to the Dreamcast.
Xbawks.
Colors.
The Dreamcast buttons have the letters molded into the plastic so if you play a game with button mashing you wind up with blistered fingertips.
As much as I loved my Dreamcast, the controller was like an attempt to do everything wrong. Short cord, uncomfortable grips, awful buttons.
I love the grips, but I understand it's polarizing. The main thing is I wish they didn't drop the 6-button layout.
The Duke will always reign supreme.
Needs more buttons.
i want this but I don't spend more than $15 on controllers
I had an imitation of that thing. Uncomfortable to the point it's unusable.
>ungodly expensive
I was pretty much at this point when looking for one but then thought frick it and got a picrel for £40 instead. Awkward layout but remapped it in x360ce so whatever.

Which ever (you) grew up with.
Xbox has the best trigger and bumper layout/names.though.
>Xbox has the best trigger and bumper layout/names
I think those are a bit confusing. It's like RT, RB then I just test which one is which
Black person, "bumper"? "Trigger"?
Also, RS, LS "right/left stick" what? Directions or buttons?
Snoy's intuitive name convention L1, 2 and 3 >>>> everything else.
Still better than the fricking LZ/RZ shit nintendo does. L1/2 is definitely the way to go though, yeah.
Oh yeah, real intuitive.
L1- top
L2-top
L3- click the thumb stick
It's not, and you know you're coping
If you weren't a diaper shitting zoomer you'd get it.
Left 1st added bumper button
Left 2nd added bumper button
Left 3rd added button.
Weird cause you don't seem to remember when ps3 came out.
There were jokes and memes about the mysteriously placed L3 R3.
Because they were unintuitive
l3 and r3 were on the ds1 homosexual zoomer
Ok. Point still stands
Babby's 1st console was the ps3?
The dualshock ONE had already l3/r3 dumb nuts.
What's with the sony fanboys that can't recognize other consoles and experiences exist.
Reminds me of folk that can't imagine having skipped breakfast
söystation logos were literally designed for morons
>diamond formation
umm no thanks sweaty.
feast your eyes on some REAL bullshit
>top row is left to right
>bottom row is right to left
I think they actually just mirrored the 4 and 6
>bullshit
Imperium Romanum forever you barbarian
Using roman numerals is kino but
Its JUMP AND PRESS THE CIRCLE BUTTON, not JUMP AND PRESS THE B/A BUTTON, so the answer is clear to me.
this
>FOYN
You mean OYFN
FNOY
>not using your feet
MCDONALDS!
homie DEY ALL CHINESE
no idea how old that pasta is at this point and I dont want to know
enter.
I always thought having ABXY was terrible and unintuitive, why not have it ordered like ABCD or WYXZ
That's basically what SNK and SEGA did.
You're tasked with adding two extra buttons to the PS layout to make it equivalent to ABCXYZ.
What shapes and colors do you add?
That is actually a good kwestion. I like the six button curved layout SEGA did, but I also prefer colored shapes to letters. One of them definitely has to be orange.
yellow plus, dark red minus
I will not elaborate further
+ and - like in one of the prototyped. And playstation face buttons don't have distinctive colours anymore.
I like the idea of re-incorporating the +/- buttons from the prototype PS1 controller.
Color 2 is hot ngl.
>Xhe needs letters on colorized buttons to know what to press
colors help your brain remember button placement onscreen so you don't have to look at the controller
imagine doing any rhythm or combo based game without colored inputs, its just bad game design
just realized your nta, enjoy the (you), this is for
>letter on colorized buttons
sorry but I'm a switchchad, i don't know what are you talking about
Take play stations shapes
Flip them so triangle and circle are closer to the player
Give them Xbox’s colours
This is ideal and I don’t know why no one besides me ever mentions this
You can tell Sega's were just them being contrarianhomosexuals to Nintendo.
Anyways, Nintendo's remains as the superior layout
They all have the same layout
No moron they were literally fixing Nintendo's mistake.
>a on the right when you have no right analog stick
>a on the bottom when you do
You need to reach a asap, which is the reason why sony went from o for confirmation to x. The steam controllers layout was hilariously moronic
For men Xbox for soys ps
Six button layouts are fricking gay. Stop with this shitty meme. Most fighters don’t even need six face buttons.
Nah you're gay.
Have you noticed how console games have been the same slop for four generations?
That's because the controllers have been the same for four generations. Controller complexity is directly tied to gameplay complexity.
>Only the arcade had good games
Now that's what I call a boomer
that is not what he said and yet it is true anyways.
Having 6 face buttons available is nice, but what makes it really kino for games that don't use them all is having 3 buttons aligned horizontally per row.
Nintendo's original ABXY configuration, every other one is a shitty copycat.
>use latin script alphabet where every language that uses it is read left to right
>nintendo puts them right to left because that's how nips read their own language
>puts x on the y-axis and y on the x-axis
Yeah nah they fricked up and others fixed it. Plus shapes are way cooler than gay letters.
Yeah, how did that work for Segay, Microshit and Soiny?
Don’t does the same shit as Nintendo with the shapes in the wrong place and pink is too similar of a colour to red
>shapes in the wrong place
explain further.
>pink is too similar of a colour to red
Yeah kinda agree on that.
Ecks should be where circle is no closest to the player. So if these two are switching places then so should triangle and square.
accurate ps controller btw
Needs more face buttons for the proper fightan experience.
best? i can tell you that nintendo is the worst
all their games frick up your muscle memory, i hate nintendo
>He needs colorized shapes to know what to press
>he
its everyone, humanoids (and even primates) recognise and process shapes faster than letters.
>t. Skill issue snoy
"He" means any unknown person. Unless you are some woke pussy who uses the singular they.
this is the best thing nintendo ever did and they were moronic to get rid of it
This was a pain in the ass for fighting games tho (yeah it's perfect for melee, but you know, real fighting games...)
it was kino for zelda, only thing better would be 6 face buttons
If 8bitdo made a version of this with 6 face buttons it'd be my favorite fightpad.
I'm pretty sure SNK licensed a 6 button version of the control for the PS2.
k yeah they did
There was a USB version for the PS3 too
Problem is, these are ungodly rare and expensive on the aftermarket. Plus I'd like the option for 2.4ghz like what 8bitdo's current NGCD pad is.
I was thinking the same thing, but I'll probably just end up soldering mechanical switches to a HORI Fighting Commander instead because it has shoulder and trigger buttons
>You can effectively get GameCube layout on any 6 button controller if you just ignore the two top corner buttons.
Purely for the ambiguity created by Microsoft and Nintendo using the same naming convention in a different layout, Sony wins.
I always liked how universal the symbols are, pleasing geometric autism.
I grew up on the SNES, but xbox makes the most sense
>X button on X axis
>Y Button on Y axis
Fixed
change blue and green to orange and pink and you'd be right. only trannies like cool colors.
>using the only color scheme that isn't set in stone as the color scheme you're basing the whole thing around
Worst thing about Sony is that I have a hard time going back to X as confirm instead of O from only playing slant games with the controller
Why this isn't selectable in the fricking options is beyond me. They did this for Asian PS4s and it worked because games had binds to "accept" and "cancel" buttons and they automatically respected your choice. This should've been the case worldwide for PS5.

Fricking unnecessarily complicated and nonsensical. And doesn't work/fricks up the controls for games that don't let you rebind the buttons.
I liked the N64 buttons. But the SNES was also great
the goat
>Real Sega ones
yes
>Retro-shit versions
no
Playstation
I don't know which is the best but Nintendo is by far the worst.
If you need to look at the controller when playing anything but dreamcast games like sonic shuffle where you can use it to hide your cards you should quit gaming.
i win
How do you hold it, with your dick?
Dreamcast will always be #1
upper left
Xbox 360 controller + charging instead of batteries + good d-pad = perfection
Playstation is the most iconic and memorable one
The only layout that make sense
>They need colors, shapes and letters to know what to press...
pfff... the amount of skill issue and fikthy casuals ITT
Circle is one line
X is two lines
Triangle 3
And Square 4
Plus it uses unique colors
True Perfection
how the frick is a circle 2 lines
My dream is the buttons be labeled after directions N,E,S,W. When you use multi-platforms and you get a "X" flashing on the screen, I die the first time.
After Tekken I've just started referring them as 1, 2, 3 and 4.
I will never forgive them for opting for Digital controllers on the Playstation Classic instead of Dualshocks. We were this close to USB Dualshocks.
what the frick do you mean by that? all modern wireless controllers also run USB, idiot
Anyone who is anyone knows of the ballache getting dickshit controllers to function on Windows.
Xbox would be perfect with one small change
Why tho?
The colors on the current Xbox buttons are practically non-distinct compared to the OG and 360 buttons, even moreso of you have some special edition controller.
The letters are what matter.
all are the same except switch which has fricked button locations.
