ps1 easy. Its the only distinct art style. The rest look generic

Lot of versions of a dull and forgettable protagonist.

Man the remake art was bad all around.

God, I hate the remake art so much, I wish it had a mod just to remove them.
It doesn't look so offensive on a vacum, but when you put they all together it just looks like they copy pasted the same template and drew the characters over the same line art.
      It's painful generic and inexpressive.

I'm not even a fan of the original art either but it was just so pointless. I don't get why they do shit like this. I just can't wrap my head around the idea that anyone could possibly prefer this. It's just so bland. So safe.

Remake Rena looks cute and funny.

OG Rena will always be the best. She actually looks like the teenager she's supposed to be, unlike the remake where they made her a fricking e-girl.
Although some of Anamnesis' Rena skins were pretty good. But quality varied wildly with the different artists.

Or you could just be a normalhomosexual shrieking "Nostalgia!" at anyone who dares prefers something older.

But I'll humor you for a bit, I can easily see why someone would prefer the original artwork to the remakes, notice the way the fabric of her clothes is depicted as bunching and creasing in the original artwork? How there's actual use of shading to contrast with the use of color as opposed to the flat shaded pastel geneeic artwork of the remake? The implied personality shown with the oversized kneesocks (?) and pose (the demure remake pose doesn't suit the character at all).

What's really funny is that the artist didn't want to bother with the fabric of her kneesocks so just gave her form fitting leggings like Celine.

Now care to share with the class why you think the Remake artist is superior?

I don't even like SO2's character artwork compared to other games of it's era but it's vastly superior to the remakes artwork.

Manga 1999 is best for a younger version and Ananmesis (2016) on the second row would be best for her a few years older.

I played Star Ocean 2 when it first came out and I thought her original design was a bit odd. Didn't match how I felt she appeared in the game. Felt the remake was still a downgrade though. Star Ocean anime was ridiculous but a lot of fun and I am still mad they never did Energy Nede arc. Haven't played or seen any of the others.

EX was its own weird thing, felt very Slayers-influenced. I liked it a lot.

There's actually a bunch of drama CDs for EX that cover some Energy Nede stuff, but only sporadically, like the first fight they win against one of the wise men.

        Manga without a doubt
Wish they got the artist for the remakes

I'm surprised the dub still holds up
Funny knowing Claude is voiced by Ed

Remember in Star Ocean, when after you travel to the past and Ilia asks Roddick to get her new clothes that won't draw attention?
And then in the remake she still asks for new clothes but then decides to keep wearing her uniform anyway because the devs were too half-assed to draw new sprites/portraits?
God I fricking hate the remakes.

What is this character's personality like?
In the original artwork, she has spunky, confident 90s heroine energy. In the rest she looks demure. Which is it?

      What personality?

      Anonymous

It's a little of both, actually. And it partially depends on whether you're playing as her or as Claude. Overall she's more in the spunky, confident category but when she's alone with the stoic childhood friend Dias she's more demure. And in Claude's story her PAs with him are a bit more demure as well.
But she beats the shit out of a bandit leader with her fists to save some dude in a warehouse so she's not a helpess maiden.

        >beats the shit out of a bandit leader with her fists to save some dude in a warehouse so she's not a helpess maiden.
I really hate that her fist damage falls off around the halfway point. It really tickled me that the "healer girl" could also cast fist for significant damage.

Sounds like a gear/skill issue. Rena can make the Kaiser Knuckles (1100 ATK) and Empresia (1220 ATK). Or if you don't have access to Customize yet, she can equip the Sorceress Knuckles (1000 ATK) and Rune Full Moon (900 ATK) which both can be acquired from the Treasure Chest/Fill-Up/Fountain Card/Lien items.
Then give her things like Berserk Ring, Meteor Ring, The Armband of Kali, and max out her Kitchen Knife, Functionality, and Scientific Ability
