Honestly, probably Sunshine. I think it's still good, but I think there's a lot of nostalgia goggles for it. There's some truly shit levels in that game.
So Galaxy 2’s the game we’re all going to rally against like npcs now, huh? It gets moderate praise but apparently it’s the most overrated Mario game all of sudden
Odyssey. It's a one-and-done treasure hunt game with so many fricking transformation gimmicks. It's an amazing first playthrough but it has zero replay value. Even Sunshine I've replayed 3-4 times, but I stopped after a few hours when I was itching to play Odyssey again last year. It really suffers from having very little actual level design, instead going for a huge map with a billion moons everywhere. Dedicated challenge areas are way too fricking rare.
Althrough 64 and Sunshine have objectively far less content, it's just more fun to go through the smaller levels and get the 7-9 stars in each one. Each star feels like a segmented thought out exploration of that level, instead of 'ground pound this lump on the ground for a moon'-tier micro challenge which is 80% of Odyssey's design.
