All "JRPGs" are trash and most of them are terrible games also but FFT is indeed a good start for accustoming oneself with Japanese fantasy games although it can be quite grindy and too on-the-rails.
My recommendation though is Valkyria Chronicles, because it has a little bit of everything that is usual in Japanese "RPG" game design; railroaded story with anime tropes, casualized Western systems, cringe characters, PSPcore aesthetic/mid to low budget, and a decent soundtrack.
>grindy
Grinding is optional in FFT if you don't play moronic. There are lots of rewards for it but you don't need to pursue them all autistically. The biggest pitfall for a western player is not switching classes or mixing it up at all based on some nebulous foolish idea that the point of the system is to find one build and stick with it for the whole game.
I think as a newbie Octopath Traveler is pretty decent. The story is not as cohesive as you want and it's basically a separate story for each party member you level and advance. But, the combat is very nice and the gfx are a great mix of old school and nuwave.
An old but classic is Golden Sun on GameBoy Advance. You can just run it on an emulator and it's amazing. It's actually known as the greatest RPG ever on GBA.
I also think Trails in the Sky ch1 is pretty dang good.
If the story is too slow for you within the first 8h you may want to try another game. It starts with a LOT of world building and character development. This is important for the later half of the game.
Depends on what they're after. Chrono Trigger is a good choice for a brisk and easy JRPG with lots of strong points but bad combat as is normal for the genre. SMT or Etrian are fine choices for something more gameplay focused, but if you want genuinely good combat in a Japanese RPG, you need to either go with an action RPG like Bloodborne or a doujin JRPG like Potato Flowers in Full Bloom.
Trails of Cold Steel
Final Fantasy Tactics
FF7 has an epic feel

Your friend is already moronic for trying "JRPGs, he will find FFT grindy.
>shitposting is all I know
>copes by seeing everything as shitposting
Your post was an attempt at banter that isn't funny and adds nothing to the conversation. Calling it shitposting is generous.
You must be genuinely autistic and paranoid. Take your medication.
I'll shove my medication up your ass, warpig
Good, that means you'll have to get close to my ass which makes it easier for me to shit on you. Come here and get your wonderful shitcake delight.
Trails in the Sky since it's a PC game

man. the gap between DQ and FF is incredible
Loaded question, why do you assume I hate that person?
I would recommend DUAL ORB II.
I think FF12 Zodiac Age is a good place to start. It has all the anime Jap bullshit and also what I think is a more CRPG combat system.
elden ring
SaGa is the most like a Western RPG, I'd say. Start with Scarlet Grace
Xenoblade chronicles series, especially X since it feels the most like a WRPG
Xenoblade or Final Fantasy
Valkyrie Profile 2 is the classic beyond all classics.
Romancing SaGa 2.

Wild Arms Alter Code F
Can't go wrong with a Wild West theme with some light sci-fi elements
