The entire point about the Ministry of Purity is that they were doing good things, like successfully purging the Afflicted and mopping up the rampant gangs, but were going too far, like trying to purge the Tengu. In the end you don't actually dismantle the ministry, but just change out the leadership.

GW2 is the best "modern" MMO in terms of gameplay, despite the boon-stacking meta being kinda moronic. The combat just feels really good and there's a ridiculous amount of content. The game is P2W tho, same with WoW, Runescape, and every other game that lets you buy "tokens" or currency that can be exchanged for gold.

The bigger issues I find is mostly the monetization. Increasing amounts of exclusive cosmetics you have to buy with real money, not unlock through play. Often stacked atop subscriptions or other monetization. Lootboxes. Item malls. Gatcha bullshit. Its all just so frustrating. I'd gladly pay twice or even three times the standard subscription fee per month if it meant that I got ALL the in game content unlockable through play, not surcharge shit. But they wont' do that because too many zoomers have been habituated to mobile monetization tricks and will spend hundreds or thousands. Its just so sickening to see things evolve this way.

The first PVP focused MMO I've seen since Shadowbane that actually thinks about what it means to be PVP focused. World is split into "eternal kingdoms" where you can build housing/town/assets personally or as a guild whatever you wish , but only have basic resources. Other stuff is from Campaign Worlds, limited time worlds with different rules (some may be FFA outside your guild, others may be 2 faction, 3 faction etc) that are set up to play Game of Thrones shit where you capture , build and hold forts to extract wealth from the land at given areas, or siege existing ones. Each of these Campaign Worlds only lasts so long and then there are victors bonuses and a new one opens up so it isnt like one guild that gets big dick gear first can gank everyone until they get bored and quit. As an "eternal crow/spirit" you can level a bunch of different "vessels" (ie bodies, classes) on the same account which all share your same wealth etc. There's a lot to like here.

Ultima Online's Lord British was behind its development an old school spritual successor to UO. 3D, if you care about the RP part of MMORPG this is a game for you. Skill not class based, you can assign a certain amount of skills at a time in a deck but can eventually learn everything if you take the time. Lots of in depth RP stuff - all guards will be named "A City Guard" but if you hail them and ask their name, now it will say "Guard Preston" over their head or something. Keyword based typed or clicked interaction with NPCs. NON instanced player housing, very comprehensive. If you're not a massive graphics prostitute (I still dislike the lack of starter hairstyles etc) its worth a shot. .

You will never have the mystery or exploration of old MMOs back. Datamining, wikis, a focus on "endgame" content and dailies to keep retention rates up instead of horizontal content progression and bosses that could take players months to even find out how to spawn have killed MMOs. Themepark to the end and ride the progression circle. MMOs where you may never even reach level cap simply cannot exist anymore. Even maplestory lets you cap out in a few weeks now
Nobody cares about exploration in mmos, people just want others to exist around them so they can pretend they're having a social experience. It's why games that are mostly single player but have shared world elements have become more popular than classical mmos

I did. Nothing more thrilling than going into an area with mobs 50 levels above you and exploring. Modern MMOs just don't even let you zone into spaces like that before the story wants you to go there.

people say mmos are a product of their time but I argue that it hasn't been fully explored yet. if a mega conglomerate like disney decides to make a mmo for marvel or their toon shit they'll probably move the bar and it would attract more players than wow/14 at their peaks combined. also riot's mmo could be a disruptor as well.
