Soundtracks aside (WLK's version of Katamari on the Rocks is awful compared to the original), WLK is vastly better. The original is basically a tech demo next to it.
WLK in almost every way. It's the perfect sequel - building on top of and polishing everything the system that Damacy created. But Damacy has some cool tunes and deserves credit for being the original.
The original, honestly. In WLK there are too many shitty objectives so it's less focused, there's less of a sense of progression, and the soundtrack is way worse. Both are good games though.
Soundtrack is objectively better in the first game.
No one involved in 1 knew what they were getting into at all or how special it was going to become, but put their souls into it anyway and produced one of the best soundtracks for a game which is also very tightly woven into the game's own fabric.
2 was never going to have a better soundtrack because now, everyone knew what Katamari Damashii represented, and were deliberately trying to make something that sounded like it. They failed, largely.

KD has some control and physics crap going on so you're prone to getting caught in the geometry and your katamari drained or you're crashing while just trying to move up the tiniest of ledges. You can't restart a mission either from the pause menu or retry once it's over, or check the contents of your katamari, or tell if you picked anything new up. Dashing also doesn't feel good either since you have to charge it, so it's really slow. After WLK it's hard to go back to it since it's mechanically inferior. Underwater rolling is hot shit though.
No, I didn't have any problems moving around in either game. The fact is there's just less bloat in the original compared to WLK, also KD makes better use of its level design and you can really feel the sense of progression by the time you've made it to the end and realized you've been rolling around on the same map the whole time. It's a great feeling that unfortunately isn't replicated in the sequel because "muh objectives".
The OST doesn't hold up as well in WLK either.

Rolling up the sun is a great feeling of progression. I remember trying to do it like a dozen times as a kid and just slowly and slowly getting closer each time.
The space level sucks as the final level of the game. The idea is good but it catches zero of the katamari feeling. It just tests if you have done enough missions.
Yeah, I kinda felt that way about WLK and the rest of the sequels in general. The fun of Katamari is starting out smaller than household objects and then finally getting to the point where you're a massive terrifying monstrosity leveling entire cities and there's no other game that embodies that feeling better than the original. Also less dialogue interruptions, a better soundtrack, and tighter level design elevates it above the rest too.
Depends how much you like the basic "roll a katamari x big in y minutes" stages versus more specific objectives. I still prefer WLK just for the stage variety.
I prefer the first game as someone who has only played the remasters. The soundtrack was so much better, and the second game's gimmick levels like the cow bear and the origami birds were genuinely awful to fully complete.
The first gam may be barebones, but it's perfect for what it is.
You can still buy and play Beautiful Katamari on Xbox platforms, Katamari Forever is mostly a collection of stages from previous games and I dunno if there's enough demand for the portable games.
I don't know if I'd say that Anon, Beautiful Katamari is pretty fun. Even if the gimmick of "make your katamari primarily out of X" wasn't especially good as a feature.

Yes. But anyone who says it's relaxing is a liar because it gets stressful once you're pushing for certain challenges.
Simply completing the stages is very easy, though. Especially in the first game, where I can't remember ever failing to at least reach the minimum size.

I did all Super Clears and got 100% Collection. It's not worth it if you're not having fun via the dopamine of succeeding against absolute bullshit like 100 animal friends in 50 seconds.

I'm glad I did the Cowbear first then went back to Taurus and Ursa Major which gave me much less trouble. Taurus incredibly so because as soon as I learned where the Holy Cow even was I got it on my first attempt. Cowbear took some foresight bullshit where I would sit there and scare everything on the racetrack to keep them all bunched up so the Cowbear was completely alone.
Shit wienerblocked me from my platinum trophy on Forever. I did it back in the fricking day on WLK, but didn't have the patience to do it a second time.
We Love Katamari is WAY better. Much more interesting stages, much more interesting challenges (except the stupid fricking cowbear stage), much better collision. The last main level (bird on an elephant) is easily the best in Katamari history.

It's very easy to set up, and there are plenty of written guides and tutorials on YouTube.
The way I went about this was buying a memory card pre-loaded with FMCB. Depending on what model of PS2 you have you can either stick a hard drive in there or play games over ethernet. You'll probably want to avoid playing games over USB if you can since it can't reach the same speeds as the disc drive can; it usually messes up load times and FMVs.

99.5% of remasters are worthless and are actually downgrades of the original unless your standards are so low that you consider any game with a higher resolution as "better". The other 0.5% could actually be considered as at least being on-par with the orignals, or in some cases better. Luckily the Katamari remasters are in the latter group, but I'm assuming you didn't even know that before being excited by it.
I actually emulated we love this time last year, as I gave up hope of us getting a remaster.
Its fine honestly, the only issues are native PS2 issues like the resolution and frame rate.

They are pretty much one game. Katamari Damacy offers the essential core experience of katamari so it's way better to start with it. But after you finish it you feel like they could have done a lot more with the concept and then you play WLK which offers tons of gimmick and thematic levels to satisfy this. But if you start with WLK you just get too many levels distracting from the core experience. The game has honestly tons of shit levels.
I have just a few issues with the WLK remaster I've noticed. >shitty and inconsistent draw distance issues. Most notably the duck present on the water levels >you have to switch to the king's memories to equip the new presents instead of having all the presents on one screen. I didn't realize the king's presents could even be equipped for cousins because of this. >pickup voices are the wrong pitch for some reason

This is the most underutilized genre. Halfway decent graphics, a little physics, destructability, and an m rating. Throw in a GTA style wanted system. You just might have another 10/10. If only I know how to program it.

Several others already said it, but We Love Katamari is the better game. They're both fantastic games, though. Very rarely does a game come around that is as good as these two were.
I really wish they would have gone to the trouble of remaking every 3D model in these games to be more in line with the new Prince and Cousin models for the remasters, but I get why they didn't.
I noticed WLK is a lot more intense than the first one, but lots of variety and you can replay the levels with different objectives. I didn't know you could do the Sumo level more than once. Soundtrack in the first is a lot more memorable.
I was actually surprised at how soon it ends the first one ends. It never goes crazy with world stages or galaxy stages, only that extra world level during credits. You also cant grow super big in most stages.

WLK has generally more diverse levels but the sense of progression in the original game is unmatched. That plus the original's superior soundtrack and the fact that the game isn't constantly going on about how it shouldn't even exist and it's an artistic deadend, the original is the better game.
I'm only familiar with WLK. I've been hearing some good ones in the music bundle for the remaster. gonna play some chill stages to listen through them all.

The guy makes toys. It just happens that the toy of rolling stuff up is inherently fun. Granted I spent about as much time on Noby Noby Boy due to the collaborative effort and seeing the new shit to play with as each planet was met. Thank frick they added the contribution multiplier late in the game so we actually got to make the round trip before the servers shut down.

Touch My Katamari Katamari Forever and Beautiful Katamari have the best replay value by far. Getting 120 points is fun and often challenging. Getting super clears is also fun in We <3 Katamari but the difficulty of seeing what levels you have super cleared makes it shittier.

BK mainly needs performance improvements, such as load times. I know playing it on Xbox One removes most, since I play it on that, but it can still be improved with an actual current gen remaster. Plus it needs QOL changes badly like autosaving.

We Love Katamari is the best. I didn't play the first until its PC port but I played lots of We Love Katamari. Me & My Katamari on PSP was pretty good. Touch My Katamari I know I played when it was new but I can't remember any of it, all these games kind of blur together.

Half the missions are bad in WLK and the king is absurdly obnoxious in that game consistently shoving a fat text box in your face in the middle of gameplay and always holding the same speech before and after every level. Katamari Damacy might not have that much content but at least it gives you the absolute core katamari experience each and every time and instead of being annoyed half the time after finishing a level you always come back greedy for more and since the game has actual progression unlike WLK it actually delivers and satisfies with each level.
You know in your heart that Damacy is the actually better game.

WLK in almost every way. It's the perfect sequel - building on top of and polishing everything the system that Damacy created. But Damacy has some cool tunes and deserves credit for being the original.

No one involved in 1 knew what they were getting into at all or how special it was going to become, but put their souls into it anyway and produced one of the best soundtracks for a game which is also very tightly woven into the game's own fabric.
2 was never going to have a better soundtrack because now, everyone knew what Katamari Damashii represented, and were deliberately trying to make something that sounded like it. They failed, largely.
Game is still better though. It's a shame really.

KD has some control and physics crap going on so you're prone to getting caught in the geometry and your katamari drained or you're crashing while just trying to move up the tiniest of ledges. You can't restart a mission either from the pause menu or retry once it's over, or check the contents of your katamari, or tell if you picked anything new up. Dashing also doesn't feel good either since you have to charge it, so it's really slow. After WLK it's hard to go back to it since it's mechanically inferior. Underwater rolling is hot shit though.
No, I didn't have any problems moving around in either game. The fact is there's just less bloat in the original compared to WLK, also KD makes better use of its level design and you can really feel the sense of progression by the time you've made it to the end and realized you've been rolling around on the same map the whole time. It's a great feeling that unfortunately isn't replicated in the sequel because "muh objectives".
The OST doesn't hold up as well in WLK either.

Rolling up the sun is a great feeling of progression. I remember trying to do it like a dozen times as a kid and just slowly and slowly getting closer each time.
The space level sucks as the final level of the game. The idea is good but it catches zero of the katamari feeling. It just tests if you have done enough missions.
Yeah, I kinda felt that way about WLK and the rest of the sequels in general. The fun of Katamari is starting out smaller than household objects and then finally getting to the point where you're a massive terrifying monstrosity leveling entire cities and there's no other game that embodies that feeling better than the original. Also less dialogue interruptions, a better soundtrack, and tighter level design elevates it above the rest too.
This is the only instance I know of a game being 10/10 and when the sequel comes out its an even better 10/10
Depends how much you like the basic "roll a katamari x big in y minutes" stages versus more specific objectives. I still prefer WLK just for the stage variety.

Yes. But anyone who says it's relaxing is a liar because it gets stressful once you're pushing for certain challenges.
Simply completing the stages is very easy, though. Especially in the first game, where I can't remember ever failing to at least reach the minimum size.

We Love Katamari is WAY better. Much more interesting stages, much more interesting challenges (except the stupid fricking cowbear stage), much better collision. The last main level (bird on an elephant) is easily the best in Katamari history.

It's very easy to set up, and there are plenty of written guides and tutorials on YouTube.
The way I went about this was buying a memory card pre-loaded with FMCB. Depending on what model of PS2 you have you can either stick a hard drive in there or play games over ethernet. You'll probably want to avoid playing games over USB if you can since it can't reach the same speeds as the disc drive can; it usually messes up load times and FMVs.
There was a Katamari game in development for the DS in 2005 but it was cancelled

99.5% of remasters are worthless and are actually downgrades of the original unless your standards are so low that you consider any game with a higher resolution as "better". The other 0.5% could actually be considered as at least being on-par with the orignals, or in some cases better. They are pretty much one game. Katamari Damacy offers the essential core experience of katamari so it's way better to start with it. But after you finish it you feel like they could have done a lot more with the concept and then you play WLK which offers tons of gimmick and thematic levels to satisfy this. But if you start with WLK you just get too many levels distracting from the core experience. The game has honestly tons of shit levels.

I have just a few issues with the WLK remaster I've noticed.

This is the most underutilized genre. Halfway decent graphics, a little physics, destructability, and an m rating. Throw in a GTA style wanted system. You just might have another 10/10. If only I know how to program it.

I noticed WLK is a lot more intense than the first one, but lots of variety and you can replay the levels with different objectives. I didn't know you could do the Sumo level more than once. Soundtrack in the first is a lot more memorable.
I was actually surprised at how soon it ends the first one ends. It never goes crazy with world stages or galaxy stages, only that extra world level during credits. You also cant grow super big in most stages.

It's pretty good, not as good as 1 and 2 but still good
WLK has generally more diverse levels but the sense of progression in the original game is unmatched. That plus the original's superior soundtrack and the fact that the game isn't constantly going on about how it shouldn't even exist and it's an artistic deadend, the original is the better game.

Subjective, but We <3 Katamari is my favorite. The gimmicks are fun (yes, even the excruciating ones) and definitely give the game some more legs

Takahashi Is a fricking hack who got lucky. Katamari deserves 50 billion sequels. The man invented an entire genre essentially and decided to walk out to make shitty “games” like noby noby boy.
The guy makes toys. It just happens that the toy of rolling stuff up is inherently fun. Granted I spent about as much time on Noby Noby Boy due to the collaborative effort and seeing the new shit to play with as each planet was met.
Thank frick they added the contribution multiplier late in the game so we actually got to make the round trip before the servers shut down.

Touch My Katamari Katamari Forever and Beautiful Katamari have the best replay value by far. Getting 120 points is fun and often challenging. Getting super clears is also fun in We <3 Katamari but the difficulty of seeing what levels you have super cleared makes it shittier.
is there like a hint system to know where cousins are in a stage? I had to do the racetrack level like 5 times to find just one, and I'm still missing one more. the silver lining is that I love this stage.

BK mainly needs performance improvements, such as load times. I know playing it on Xbox One removes most, since I play it on that, but it can still be improved with an actual current gen remaster. Plus it needs QOL changes badly like autosaving.

WLK is the worst in the series. The stages are all sad gimmicks and its a big downgrade from the first. Beautiful Katamari is probably the best in the series as it returned to and improved the first games formula, but it needs a remaster

We Love Katamari is the best. I didn't play the first until its PC port but I played lots of We Love Katamari. Me & My Katamari on PSP was pretty good. Touch My Katamari I know I played when it was new but I can't remember any of it, all these games kind of blur together.

Half the missions are bad in WLK and the king is absurdly obnoxious in that game consistently shoving a fat text box in your face in the middle of gameplay and always holding the same speech before and after every level. Katamari Damacy might not have that much content but at least it gives you the absolute core katamari experience each and every time and instead of being annoyed half the time after finishing a level you always come back greedy for more and since the game has actual progression unlike WLK it actually delivers and satisfies with each level.
You know in your heart that Damacy is the actually better game.
I'm still mad at how most of Touch's original levels are behind an absurdly tedious grind wall, or pay2unlock.
Any recommendation for Katamari fans? Something similar in spirit or design, not necessarily gameplay wise

Why do people shit on the post-WLK games so much? They're basically just more of the same and really fun. The only one I didn't care for much was Touch My Katamari.
Seems in general that people tend to understand that Keita Takahashi wasn't the director for those. Whether or not it being relevant it seems that they think they're inauthentic.
Are they really as good and soulful as the the first two? Not to overuse the buzzword, but I'm playing WLK and I already feel it's a bit more soulless —as in, it feels there's slightly less love was poured into it. If that makes sense. So I can only imagine it got worse with time.

i really wish i could like WLK because it's gorgeous and it's awesome being able to pick a cousin but it's an extremely frustrating game to git gud at and a lot of the music is just fricking annoying. the vibe of the game in general is pretty annoying. i hate when the king or pretty much anyone speaks
