Idk I've only ever played gen 1 and 2. Gen 3 looks the best by far though.
I can't decide between gen 3/4/5.
Emerald because the battle frontier (even if gay sometimes) still is the best challenge in the series. That and I have a soft spot for pre-phys/special split.
Platinum is probably the best single player campaign+postgame in the series.
And I love Black and White for having the best story, as well as being able to have an entire region devoid of older pokemon until the postgame.

HGSS and Black 2 were it for me. I didn't care for Gen 3. Never played X/Y gen or the Switch shit.
Objectively Gen 4, but Gen 3 had the most soulful setting and Gen 2 was packed with the most content even if half of it was just a shitty copy-paste.
I don’t know, I’m stuck between Emerald and Platinum, Emerald is the one I always go back to the most, there’s just a level of replay in that one that makes me come back again and again and it’s so much fun, the region just feels fun and quintessential pokemon and the designs are just the best but Platinum just has the more heart felt pokemon journey, there’s just something about, it feels like the climax of pokémon, the region just has a more hert felt melancholic full of history feeling, I can’t really describe but it’s slower pace makes it less replay able than Emerald and the frontier isn’t as cool in my opinion, ehh, I’ll just say for me those two are the best

Legends Arceus is the only good mainline Pokemon game. The old games were good for the time, but don't hold up today and the other new games suck dick. There are plenty of good Pokemon spinoffs though.
