>kalos
half are decent to good, the other half are completely forgettable >paldea
all outright bad except for larry who ranks among the best in the series
>Kanto
Should get a pass because it's the vintage iconic classic, but early gen Gym Leaders rely on the anime / Pokemon Adventure to give them personality. Not Kanto tho, because of the Fame Checker in FRLG giving us lore and personality for the Leaders.
>Johto
Gets memed on for its low level curve and not all Johto Leaders using Johto Pokemon. Pokemon Adventure gave the leaders a lot personality in this era. HGSS also expanded upon the Fame Checker giving us more info on them.
>Hoenn
The base Ruby/Sapphire have the Pokenav info on the leaders which was cool, but Emerald gave us our first dose of Leader rematch. Pioneer in giving the Gym Leaders personality with just the games. Very charming. This also begins that trend of "early Rock leader" which becomes such a stereotype of Leaders.
>Sinnoh
Did some cute things like having a Father & Son Gym Leader duo, a rivalry between Volkner and Flint, Fantina being a contest star, etc. Platinum expanded upon the Gym Leader rematch. The leaders are found outside their Gyms and interacting with the player, but they do not affect the plot with Team Galactic in any meaningful way. That Jasmine cameo is the first of many (see Unova and Alola) helping hands to other regions.
>Unova
The Gym Leaders feel the most alive in this gen. They interact with you every step of the way in Game Freak's attempt at a more 'complex' story. Lots of neat interactions that require memory link. The Gym Leaders are heavily involved with the plot with Team Plasma. Pokemon World Tournament is the ultimate culmination of Gym Leader rematches.
I like how Sabrina appears as a movie star (did she retire as a Gym Leader between Johto and now likrematch.
>Kalos
Empty. The passion from the past games is gone. There is that post-game mansion near the egg route that serves as a Gym Leader rematch area. There are some lore tidbits about the Gyms, but the Leaders really do feel lifeless. Korina is the only recurring Gym Leader iirc.

There is that post-game bar when you're done all the game's content that serves as a Gym Leader rematch area, and they couldn't even include it in the original release of the game. The leaders are found outside their Gyms and interacting with the player, but they do not affect the plot with Team Flare in any meaningful way. That Kimono girls reference with Valerie is the first of many (see Unova and Alola) helping hands to other regions.
Tbh I don't like Sinnoh gym leaders that much. They're about even with Kalos for me. On the Gym Leader rematch comparison: Dumb member exclusive house in Frontier island > Dumb mansion next to Daycare.
I didn't know that about Olympia. That's hella cool. She went from the most forgettable to pretty cool.
I like Korina roller derby girl design a lot, but Korina's Mega tutorial was so forced tho.
I think the Valerie being a Kimono girl is big a stretch, unless it's outright hinted at ingame (maybe saying she's from Johto or something).
>I think the Valerie being a Kimono girl is big a stretch, unless it's outright hinted at ingame (maybe saying she's from Johto or something).
She literally states in Masters that she isn't one of the Kimono Girls, she does however confirms that she is from Johto
Alexa is the older sister of the first gym wh lives in town and explains the mansion if I recall. She had more lore in the anime then the games with sadly how barebones most gamee character relations are. It's basically Roxie and her dad sort of deal.
>Volkner is the only recurring Gym Leader iirc
Nah, Roark teaches you how the Underground works
Crasher Wake has a mini subplot about Being joke mentor
>Alola
The Trial Captains are all cute and serve their role in the story well enough. They are kind of regulated to their own islands though and don't really interact with the plot much. I actually don't remember if the non-Elite 4 Trial Captains do anything past the second island because these games are so boring to play through again lol
>Galar
Bro I didn't even finish my Sword version. Game is so dull, but I didn't start it until after Legends Arceus and it's hard to play Sword after playing a good Pokemon game.
That being said, the Leaders are really cool and have a lot of personality. Especially the later Gyms; Pierre the Dark gym and the Fairy Grandma who kidnaps that kid with the white hair perm. Great characters. Rihanna seems cool too.
>Paldea
The best set of gym leaders since Unova/Sinnoh honestly. I really like the school classes expanding on the Grass gym. And the Water gym being a goof.
There isn't a central antagonist to stop in Paldea (the Paradox pokemon being invasive species is very subtle if only 1 of them escaped Area Zero). But Larry is the goat.
>I actually don't remember if the non-Elite 4 Trial Captains do anything past the second island because these games are so boring to play through again lol
Nanu and Hapu have pretty relevant roles in the stories of both games actually, and they're the most interesting ones of the 4 imo
yeah him, he's really cool, and he also ties to the UB capture quest in the postgame of Sun and Moon. He worked with the international police in the past to hunt down and capture fugitive UBs, alongside Looker and an unnamed person that was meant to be bait, but because of Looker's hesitation to attack the pokémon the person died. After that Nanu retired from the International Police and became the jaded person that we know now.
That I remember from my only completed playthrough of Sun.
>I think the Valerie being a Kimono girl is big a stretch, unless it's outright hinted at ingame (maybe saying she's from Johto or something).
She literally states in Masters that she isn't one of the Kimono Girls, she does however confirms that she is from Johto
I forgot Pokemon Masters was a thing. I bet there is a lot of lore in that gacha game. That is cool info that she is a reference to the original Kimono Girls. I saw that theory as "she wears kimonos" + "she uses an Eeveelution as her ace"

I know it's >gacha and people meme on it because they have stockholm syndrome and can't quit, but as someone who loves the human characters and just started it this year it's been loads of fun. The characterizations and dialogue are spot on, the oc chars are pretty likable, and you can tell there are people working on the game who genuinely have some passion for it. Not to mention alt outfits and fanservice interactions.
You don't even have to play, just look up which events your faves are in and watch on youtube.
She remind me of Creamy Mami so she is my favorite Paldean Gym Leader.
Paldea isn't that bad with the leaders, them all having beef with Geeta for various reasons is funny. It's actually pretty funny when you put 2-and-2 together and realize that Grusha states they lose the Leader position if they no-show on the inspection and then some like Brassius basically say the gonna reschedule Geeta so they can talk/battle (you) before getting the correction that (you) are doing the inspection.
Honestly the biggest issue with the Paldea League is Poppy being a E4 member as a toddler kinda stretching it even with ages of Twins and Pre-Schooler Trainers and Geeta being Geeta making almost everyone in the region look worse by default of being "under" them rather then actual issues with their own characterizations.
Honestly it is hard to put them as whole set because most gens have some really good Gym Leaders and a stinker, on average though it would be Alola cause they don't have Gym Leaders lol.
"OMG, He's Literally ME" more or less. You can like Larry all you want, but he and his "I hate my job and my boss" salaryman schtick is incredibly Normalgay. he ain't the Normal-type Specialist for nothing after all.
Why would a gym leader have the gimmick before it's introduced? You aren't very smart. Also imagine the same game having rematches and they still don't use the stupidly OP gimmick, that would be even wackier.
Really? I actually disagree, the first couple gym leaders using a gimmick you don't initially have access to would be a nice teaser, and make it that much more satisfying when you earn the ability to use it in game.
I don't really fully agree with that assessment, the SPORTS theming does make them have a bit duller visual design (By virtue of the uniforms) overall, but honestly between the cards and the Star Tournament pre-battle banter about their various doubles combinations and doubling as the "E4" i think they actually have quite a lot of shit that showcases them in the games proper.
Paldea is carried entirely by Katy and maybe Larry.
Kalos is stronger as a while.
They're both way better than the shit Galar gym leaders >B-but muh Brown Youmu.
Going to have to give it to Gen 6 out of the ones I've played. Versus Gen 9, I'd say that Larry, Brassius and Iono are standouts. I'd probably like Tulip more if she didn't have all of that stuff about smells. Water gym leader is decent, but he stands in the shadow of Wake, so he didn't have much of a chance. Whereas with Gen VI, only Korrina is memorable.
True, but it's still memorable enough, which is what I want from a Gym Leader. Plus, she had the only smart use of making a non-electric pokemon electric type.
-- Kalos > Viola: good bug lady > Rock guy: even look at the image I have no recollection of his existence > Fairy girl: great design > Ice guy: feels like we have 10 of those > Corrina: nothing personal, but she forced me to use a Lucario and that's unforgivable > Psychic lady: amazing design. Should become an Elite 4 if Z ever happens > Grass guy: cool. I like the giant scissors > Clemont: nice.
-- Paldea > Katy: best bug lady > Brassius: unique, but also uninteresting > Iono: good > Larry: Larry > Kofu: r. Kalos' Ice guy (but slightly better) > Ryme: she is cool, frick off > Tulip: step on me! > Grusha: meh, but I guess good design
I think it's that bramble-belt-turned-into-the-smallest-whip that bothers me.
As a whip, it looks lame because there's always just a bit unraveled even though it would look cool if it was longer. As a belt it's just ugly useless like those decorative belst from Kingdom Hearts or Digimon.
SWSH may be complete shit, but it was clearly the game the Gym Leaders were designed to be more interesting due to Master Sex.
It's probably the best group of leaders.

I mean you could virtually just compare most Gym Leaders to trainer classes as a "promoted" version of one. So Candice is just one of many in that regard.
Paldea has the worst single gym leader, Grusha. He's just a fricking insulting, slanderous parody of me. I thoroughly despise Grusha and want to prosecute Nintendo for slandering me by creating him.
Sinnoh has the most unmemorable literal who gym leaders on par with Galar and Paldea to an extent. At least with Paldea I can remember Grusha for being a femboy, Iono for the moronic Vtumor gimmick and Larry for being Giga BASED. I literally can't name a singe gym leader from Shittnoh or gACKlar. Also Sinnoh has to have the most unmemorable e4 cast ever (probably on par with Kalos).
Why are these guys getting a pass by everyone in the thread? Zero to limited presence in their games outside of their gyms, very few strong personalities, and designs that seem basic even compared to Gens 1 and 2.
>Roxanne
she's a teacher >Norman
player's dad >Flannery
insecure about being a gym leader >Twins
memorable double battle >Wallace
becomes champion
Can't remember if Brawly, Wattson, and Winona did anything interesting but I don't dislike them.
Also in gen 3 most of them benefit from memorable towns like Fortree and Sootopolis.
Probably because people consider them the "Baseline" along with Kanto (Because Gen 1), they are like milk and toast, people may not consider them as particularly stand out, but they also don't have giant turd in their roster or behavior that could turn people off.
Plus you know, DAD and the first Double Battle Gym leaders, so it ain't like they don't got anything going for them as a whole. I like Wattson.
They are pretty terrible, but having Winona means one sole grace while Sinnoh doesn’t have any.
If the thread was asking for the two worst groups, most people would be mentioning it
Johto. Despite the memes and nostalgia; it's mostly the girls remembered and the guys somewhat.
I say this because it contains Chuck and no one likes Chuck because you just remembered him now and are gonna type and defend him.
Chuck is a literal nothing Gym Leader that he was excluded in the Pokemon Masters Johto event where all Gym leaders run to stop Team Rocket, only getting a name appearance and then a model later on; but you still cannot roll for him and when you can he will be 5* waste because Masters doesn't add to the 3* pool anymore.
Kanto's gym leaders are remembered only for the anime
Johto's gym leaders are remembered because of HGSS
Hoenn's gym leaders are remembered because of the roms/fangames and Emerald
Sinnoh's gym leaders are remembered because of the nostalgia around Sinnoh's lore
Unova's gym leaders are remembered only because of the gap years between BW and BW2
Kalos' gym leaders are remembered only when someone says that Kalos' gym leaders are the most forgettable gym leaders
Galar's gym leaders are remembered because of the gym leader ost and for the memes
Paldea's gym leaders are remembered only for the memes
>Kalos' gym leaders are remembered only when someone says that Kalos' gym leaders are the most forgettable gym leaders
Give Kalos some justice. The ashnime did them right. >Galar's gym leaders are remembered because of the gym leader ost and for the memes >Paldea's gym leaders are remembered only for the memes
Anything that reeks for the meme audience is automatically soulless. If you are a meme you can't be taken seriously.
Ask someone how Sinnoh’s gym leaders are more memorable than XY’s and they won’t be able to give you an actual answer beyond “uhhh they existed in more games”
Every one of Sinnoh's Gym Leaders exist outside of their Gyms, having scenes that establish additional characterization and interacting with other characters in the story. Platinum and HGSS both added even more scenes developing them further.
The majority of the Kalos League exists as PNGs you talk to once.
Please explain your standard of "memorable" that doesn't consider "seeing them more and learning more about them than having one conversation during their Gym Battle"
I can't see it being any Elite Four other than Kalos. But generally the Elite Four has always been kind of sucky because you mostly just meet them when you battle them, and the game's mostly over after that. That's why Gen IX actually has one of the strongest, with the weakest link being the kid. I didn't play 7 or 8 though, so maybe one of them is worse than Kalos.
Sinnoh's E4 only really has Flint, but Flint had the most presence of an E4 member outside of their room at that point in the series. Unless you count Lance, but he was champion by GSC.
Clemont, Korrina, Ramos, Wulfric, Viola, Valerie, Grant are all memorable designs. The only forgettable one is the psych negress, but even then she had a cool gym concept. Half of these got a lot of justice thanks to the anime for me though
Now , Paldea loses to me for the fact that has 2 middle agers that aren't even "cool" (like clay, wulfric, nanu or pryce)
And on top of that, *ono . That shit doesn't reeks anything more than "We want the vtuber audience" . Frick that shit.
Worst is Galar followed by Sinnoh then Kalos. Galar has the most boring roster because the game puts all its energy telling us about Leon’s unbeatable CHARIZARD
Sinnoh’s is just leaves no impression
Kalos’s is mostly forgettable but is saved by Valerie
Dishonorable mention goes to Johto for being kneecaped by West Kanto syndrome and Crystal not fixing that even though every other third version fixed gym leader teams. However the leaders themselves are interestingly written (by pokemon standards) even Chuck the most forgettable at least did that thing with the rock. And the phone calls and meeting’s really add a lot.
Also the HGSS at least gave them respectable teals in the rematches.
>Galar has the most boring roster because the game puts all its energy telling us about Leon’s unbeatable CHARIZARD
This is a fricking absurd conclusion to reach no matter how much you hate Gen 8. The League Cards aloe puts it's cast heads and shoulders above every other gen's in terms of characterization
Kalos why are you even asking?
at least XY's look good
grusha>>>>>>>>the rest

Sadly, this. Corrina is good, but the rest are fricking meh.

Kalos has the worst and most forgettable gym leaders. They have what? 3 Pokemon each at most? Truly the worst gen.
XY and it's not even close. Boring, nonexistant personalities just like every other set, but now with shitty fights too.
Sinnoh's gym leaders are so forgettable OP couldn't even include it on the image.
larry clears but imo gen 9's are way worse than gen 6's otherwise

Sinnoh without Platinum would've deserved a mention too.
Kinnoh won
Shartlos lost
>Sinnoh has to have the most unmemorable e4 cast ever
Flint's existence disproves that. Him alone beats Hoenn.
Why are these guys getting a pass by everyone in the thread? Zero to limited presence in their games outside of their gyms, very few strong personalities, and designs that seem basic even compared to Gens 1 and 2.
>Roxanne
she's a teacher
>Norman
player's dad
>Flannery
insecure about being a gym leader
>Twins
memorable double battle
>Wallace
becomes champion
Can't remember if Brawly, Wattson, and Winona did anything interesting but I don't dislike them.
Also in gen 3 most of them benefit from memorable towns like Fortree and Sootopolis.
Wattson had a small thing involving the power plant didn't he?
Probably because people consider them the "Baseline" along with Kanto (Because Gen 1), they are like milk and toast, people may not consider them as particularly stand out, but they also don't have giant turd in their roster or behavior that could turn people off.
Plus you know, DAD and the first Double Battle Gym leaders, so it ain't like they don't got anything going for them as a whole. I like Wattson.
I really like the porn animation where Flanery gets fricked by futa Hilda
They are pretty terrible, but having Winona means one sole grace while Sinnoh doesn’t have any.
If the thread was asking for the two worst groups, most people would be mentioning it
Sinnoh has Candice
I like Chuck he has a Poliwrath. But it can't be Johto when every Johto gym leader there is iconic aside from Chuck and Pryce.
Pryce had pretty cool redesign in HGSS
I liked when he wore summer clothes because he enjoyed the cold. gave him more personality.
>Galar's gym leaders are remembered because of the gym leader ost and for the memes
>Paldea's gym leaders are remembered only for the memes
Anything that reeks for the meme audience is automatically soulless. If you are a meme you can't be taken seriously.
Clearly a tie between Kalos and Sinnoh.
Kalos no question
The only ones I even remember are Korrina and the blonde kid and thats mostly because they got screen time in the anime
Whoever says Sinnoh should visit a psychologist. I mean this seriously and objectively.
Ask someone how Sinnoh’s gym leaders are more memorable than XY’s and they won’t be able to give you an actual answer beyond “uhhh they existed in more games”
Gardenia is sexo
Simple as.
Every one of Sinnoh's Gym Leaders exist outside of their Gyms, having scenes that establish additional characterization and interacting with other characters in the story. Platinum and HGSS both added even more scenes developing them further.
The majority of the Kalos League exists as PNGs you talk to once.
sorry my standards are a bit higher than “a character’s sprite existed outside of the gym this one time therefore they are better”
Please explain your standard of "memorable" that doesn't consider "seeing them more and learning more about them than having one conversation during their Gym Battle"
Alola, I don't even remember a gym leader
They don't even have them
It's strange there is a debate even going on when it's objectively Kalos.
Because Sinnoh’s gym leaders exist.
1>3>5>4>2>9>6
I don't have a ranking for Gen 8's gyms since I never played it. I'd probably put it between 2 and 9 though.
its cucklos without question. even game freak tries to forget the mistake that was Gen VI
How can Sinnoh’s be bad when it has Maylene, Crasher Wake, and Byron?
I like Fantina and Volkner too
Anti Sinnoh gays once again proving to be mentally ill
Larry is a chad
Which region has the worst Elite Four, /vp/?
Kalos or Sinnoh and it's not particularly close.
That said, Elite 4s didn't really get "good" in terms of characterization until Gen 7.
gen 4
>Which region has the worst Elite Four, /vp/?
also Kalos
XY is basically a 3D tech demo
Hoenns E4 kinda sucks too.
Flint is more memorable than 80-90% of gen 1-6 E4
>XY is basically a 3D tech demo
that's somehow better than gen 4 and 5
kys kalostroon
please let me know why I can berry farm in the "tech demo" but I can't in gen 5
O KALOSPERM
I can't see it being any Elite Four other than Kalos. But generally the Elite Four has always been kind of sucky because you mostly just meet them when you battle them, and the game's mostly over after that. That's why Gen IX actually has one of the strongest, with the weakest link being the kid. I didn't play 7 or 8 though, so maybe one of them is worse than Kalos.
Sinnoh's E4 has some charm, the lack of overt gimmicks makes them feel like tough motherfrickers who fought their way to the top.
Sinnoh's E4 only really has Flint, but Flint had the most presence of an E4 member outside of their room at that point in the series. Unless you count Lance, but he was champion by GSC.
Lorelei had some presence in FRLG
>the lack of overt gimmicks makes them feel like tough motherfrickers who fought their way to the top.
too bad the only hard one was Lucian
Sword and Shield didn't even have an elite 4, it was just rematches and a KAAANTOOOOO shilling champ, should that not make them the worst?
Also, Alola's E4 is three people you fought already and some girl from an area they didn't get to put into the game in time
Galar by virtue of technically not having one.
I can't even remember any of Kalos's gym leaders except the autist with the helmet
>Sinnoh’s is just leaves no impression
They're all pretty memorable aside from maybe Byron or Volkner. But even Byron has the link in with Roark.
How is Minato not memorable?
He's always just been stuck as the gym leader that was overshadowed by everything that just happened in the plot for me.
Volkner is like a top 3 most popular male gym leader
Johto, barely any of them uses Johtomons
