Kieran was the most satisfying to defeat rival for me. And his character arc was good for Pokémon standards.
He was simultaneously infuriating and hilarious (in a pathetic way), made me look forward to every confrontation and how it would make him spiral down even further.
So? Hop had a complex cause his brother was Champ and he turned out to not live up to his expectations of becoming as good as him. Their motivations are different, but where Hop pussies out like "Aw bummer mate guess I'm no good at Pokémon battles and have to become a researcher haha", Kieran doubles down and becomes so obsessed with being better than the MC that he literally neglected everything else including eating properly. Hop's character arc was lukewarm at best, while Kieran's development actually felt interesting because things dramatically changed and it seemed like things were at stake.

They both had complexes and spiralled into despair because the MC beat their ass. The difference is that Hop just kinda gave up which is really boring. Kieran did what they tried with Hop but way better and more interesting.

the ones i like are wally, the whole gen 5 quartet, gladion, bede, and the kitakami siblings. i respect the og 2. every one else either dislike or think nothing of. nemona is just hop/hau with breasts.
Blue is a classic because realistically Red and Blue wouldn’t give a shit about each other if they weren’t neighbors, but they are, so by that circumstance they’re friends/rivals, which is pretty common in real life.
Also I like Shauna because she’s a cute girl, coded to like you, and technically a rival.

Look, I'd just rather my Rival be a dickhead who hates me rather than some gay who sucks my dick and acts like he or shit even has a chance at beating ke after I've been routinely wiping the floor with them. That little shit from Ssord & Shield was the worst.
Yeah, I miss butthole rivals. I think Barry did the friendly rival thing right by being less "friendly" and more "pushy" (quite literally). But I mostly like him because he actually has a good team which was quite rare for rivals at the time.

Brendan/May was a joke until ORAS. Wally is dogshit and barely counts as a rival. Gen 5 rivals are great as characters but have terrible teams (why the frick does Hugh have a monkey when it's not a gift in the sequel?). All Gen 6 rivals are bottom barrel. Hau is annoying as frick. Gen 8 rivals were forgettable because I barely remember playing Sword. Nemona is just femHau. Kieran is ok but he's rubbed me the wrong way since the start, and his pulled back hair is ugly.
