Neither the map nor the running shoes are essential. You can easily complete the game without either, and the original let you do that.

Also the game rewards you for exploring by giving you optional items. Whereas the remake just gives you everything every time, just for walking along a straight path. And you have to take the same path every time, no taking on the gym before Sprout Tower. It's like you're on rails.

This is my only real gripe with HG/SS. Legendarys are legendary because you seek them out and earn the fight, not because the story says they're legendary then hands them to you on a silver platter. Hated this in crystal too with Suicune.

Pretty sure you can still choose to ignore Suicune and move on with the plot, while HG/SS literally won't let you into Kanto until Ho-Oh/Lugia is at least encountered.
Its true that you can skip the fight, but the story still presents you an easy opportunity to catch something that is supposed to be legendary. Gen 1 gets it right by having you explore areas that are just there to find these pokemon. Crystal just says "Here's a Suicune if you want it." It detracts from the whole legendary status.

Crystal is no different from G/S there, you get the Clear Bell from beating the Radio Tower just like you get the Rainbow/Silver Wing in G/S, and fight him in the same place as Ho-oh.

From what I've read looking into them, Polished Crystal and Soul Crystal are just full of nu-gen garbage and even go so far as to remove original pokemon to add in nu-gen pokemon so you can safely disregard them. Crystal Ultimate and Crystal Legacy seem like they're trying to be kosher but Ultimate's changelog is a fricking wall of text so I don't know if I missed any crap.
i'm a crystal clear shill, that game ruined vanilla titles for me and i really don't spring for rom hacks the overwhelming majority of the time
frick all those ones that add later gen pokemon, fakemon, or try and create new full regions
if crystal clear maintained the original e4 cast with different teams, the game would be a 10/10 for me; as it stands though it's still a 9 in terms of pokemon games

Are there any GSC romhacks that add Hoenn and Sinnoh? The first 4 regions are the Japanese ones, and the only games I consider canon, plus the best part of GSC is that they managed to fit Kanto. So the obvious thing to do is add 2 more regions that fit thematically, and Gen IV evolutions fit too (Magmortar, Electivire, Yanmega, etc).
Also, HGSS was garbage trash. Compare the aesthetics of Johto at night, with the GBC pallette, to HGSS. They also removed the female player model from Crystal, who had one of the best designs, and replaced her with some ugly moron c**t with a mushroom for a hat. The music was awful too. Anyone that likes HGSS over the originals should be spayed and neutered to prevent spreading their useless genes.

The forced old man map tour takes at least twice that long alone. It's long in the original too, but not forced on you.
