I want to make a simple space RPG game with basic orbit simulation, a few star systems and explorable 2-d sidescrolling maps on the planets, a basic story with custom animated stop motion puppets and shit too. A few factions and named characters n shit. RPG maker VX is on sale for 90% off and i am tempted to buy it for 6.75 but i don't really understand the buzzwords on the site so if someone can help me out here. I know nothing of game design i really just want something to sink time into. I'm not looking for complex gameplay, mostly just dialogue and branching lines of story. A more interactive point-and-click experience.
Rpgm 2k3
Any particular reason? can it handle 720p resolution textures?
It's easiest to use IMHO.
Why don't you create a 1h demo and post it in the relevant platforms? If people like it, you can still switch engines.
i have tons of assets in the backlog many of which directly intended for this idea, many not, but there's no logic or consistency being broken so i feel like i have enough assets to atleast barebones decorate a basic map, specific assets, mostly stop motion puppets, i'd like to record and use as videos cause frick digital man, so i want something to support videos, like a comms screen or whatever.
will look it up
Buy VX "Ace", not VX
90% discount, anything else is a rip off.
yeah only 7 euro and looks about right for what i have in mind.
Unreal engine. it's free.
https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US
>free
there are royalties to be paid once you reach a certain amount of profit, so no, it is not in fact "free", on top of being overkill for a simple 2d rpg
Let's be real: for (You), you have no need to worry about it one day not being free.
i'm not looking for anything complicated
the scripting in unreal 5 is exceedingly intuitive and easy. easier than rpgmaker imo.
Rpgm is incredibly easy. Hard to believe that ue5 is easier.
If so, how bad are professional game developer? Like below meme tier apparently.
can't find anything about custom assets...
Pretty sure 2k3 allows for custom content
You can literally do whatever you want with 2k3. The only limit is how hard you want to cope about not being able to do it instead of just doing it.
man i am just reading what it says on the page i haven't yet bought it idk
What are you talking about? You can use custom assets in any RPG maker.
>RPG maker VX is on sale for 90% off
this thing is so old it's gonna run into compatibility issues
RPG Maker is essentially just a shitty asset flip platform but the problem is that scripts don't function as assets
they work like any scripting language works with problem solving in mind
there is no point in having 200 different variations of 'farming apples from trees' unlike having different graphical assets of trees and apples OR MOWED GRASS
form vs function or something
obligatory
?t=600
>large snake
>snake is normal-sized
>regular, non-large scorpion
>it's the size of a fricking snake
if you're not planning on selling it, then rpgm is a fine starting place to learn about making a video game. as long as you don't want any action elements, which will be pretty clunky unless you're the top 1% of the top 1% of the top 1% of japanese rm2k3 gods, action gameplay will be clunky.
if you are planning on selling your game idk what to tell you other than don't use rpgm but as a hobbyist tool it's fun. i'd recommend RMMV though
so what do i use if i want to sell?
You make a good game.
Seems to be pretty hard task these days
homie the best selling rpgm games were made with vx ace, even the offiicial rpgm website admits this
it's not like i need to sign some difficult to get contract or something to sell the game? i'm really not thinking of such a conplex idea, mostly i want an interactive story, that's it. A very stylized view into another world.
if you use vx ace, mv or mz, you don't need to sign shit to sell the game, you just make a game and publish it
based.
not really a dealbraker but i had the idea that the game itself employs non-standard (more traditional) conception of physical space like the map in picrel, so like in certain areas the whole frame rotates around an axis, like in a big square or something. Idk if that's something doable tho i'd be willing to concede on the rotating frame.
i have a very clear and simple vision.
>if you are planning on selling your game idk what to tell you other than don't use rpgm
Why?
