None if you ever read a book and have a real life. That's why it's unacceptable that 99% of them have shit gameplay
Yeah, I think this is the worst part of old games for me. Not the gameplay at all or “clunkiness,” quite the opposite they usually feel razor sharp and lean compared to modern games. It’s more so that I thought some retro games had a great story only to go back and realize how bad they were sometimes. Game stories in general just blow, almost without exception. The less there is the better, shmups get it right there.

Go watch some porn, Carmack.
I LOVE reading, but you have very clearly written just the first clichés that came your mind. As if editors weren't constantly publishing garbage made by talentless people because of 'inclusivity', as if they weren't looking for things with a broad appeal...
Looking at this thread, I cannot understand the extreme cynicism of people that demand Dostoevsky-tier plots in their games even though most probably they consume Netflix garbage, books aimed at teenagers... Could it be that you're adopting this attitude because your favorite brand doesn't tend to focus on storylines?
Exactly. How many of them do you think have actually red war and peace, how many do you think have even read a book since highschool? I bet the last book most of these fricks remember reading is the boxcart children, because they have boxed childlike minds.
>Inb4 "I read Harry Potter every year"
Kek, yeah, ok sweetheart

Both me btw
Story in videogames was always window dressing.
>what is ultima 4
Good video games have a gamey story that's conducive to gameplay and how the game is built. Not more, not less
Super Mario RPG
Also the best gameplay in any RPG.
I liked the story in Glory of Heracles IV
Looks tight. I've never heard of this series.
Often I find myself recommending an rpg to a friend only to be told multiple times how there is no point in playing it because "they've been spoiled about the ending/story".
This is idiotic, It's basically saying that a Game is worthless without It's story, while ignoring that a "game" is called that because, you know, it is something that you actually fricking "play".
>worth playing for the plot alone?
Just play Dragon Quest V, It's among the greatest SFC rpgs ever
A book story is a predetermined path that can be adjusted by the author. A game has to bend it's story around the player while trying to make a fun game. Just learn to appreciate a game's story as a game
Linda has a pretty fun plot, but I wouldn't say it's worth playing for the plot alone. It's the only JRPG I've ever played where the gameplay isn't a complete fricking chore. You've got to go around working out where the animals are, some have gimmicks involved like you have to wipe out all the mice in a cave during spring for sparrows to spawn in summer or something like that, and levelling up isn't always that useful, overkilling enemies turns them into gibs which are useless because you're trying to capture the animals for your ark, not kill them.
The whole 3 scenario system is a setup for this. At first you only have access to one part of the map, in the second scenario you're mostly confined to a different part, and in the third scenario you get the whole world to explore, and the strictest requirements for the ending because you've already played the tutorials. It's just really well planned out.
Phantasy Star IV. Nothing I played before or since has come close to the emotional impact this one had on me. I still miss the characters and world and everything.
>muh plot
The "plot" of an RPG has never been good.
What matters is the EXPERIENCE.
DUAL ORB 2. It has monster trucks and sniper rifles.
