For story - Blizzard RTS, Homeworld, C&C/Red Alert. But just in terms of a good time, Age of Empires 4, Mythology, Dawn of War, COmpany of Heroes, there are lots. Although many usually have a bad mission or two.
I personally pick Age of Mythology for best campaign (Fall of the Trident).
Following Arkantos in his journey throughout ancient yurop and dealing with different mythological beasts is a treat. It's like one of those epics that you read in the greeks or eddas.
This, Fall of the Trident was great as a full romp, shit's got 32 scenarios and somewhat refreshing compared to most games having civ or faction-specific campaigns of 5-10 each. New Atlantis had some moments, but could've used a few more scenarios to space it out.
That said, AoE II ones had their moments. The entire Dawn of the Dukes DLC for DE is probably one of its best, playing out like a full narrative when played chronologically.
I hate 4x games. It's like they combined some RTS games with sims. You need a tutorial just to understand what everything on the screen, every icon represents or does before you can go into the mechanics proper. And you also don't seem to haveuch control over resources. Like every area/country has infinite resources, not like in classic RTS games where you can fight for resource nodes and cut the enemy off.
Shill on them.
The thing brood war had going for it was the superior vibes, aesthetic and story
Gameplay-wise WoL blows it the frick out, all the missions are varied and fun and not being able to max out every upgrade means your upgrade choices matter a lot more
i fricking despise starcraft 2's campaign, it's basically an rpg-rts hybrid. i fricking hate rts hybrids, give me a god damn full rts. even worse are those horrendous grand strategy RTS where 99% of the gameplay is repeating the same levels, like those dawn of war expansions. the only bad parts of the original starcraft were the joke rpg levels but they end so quickly it doesn't really matter
The only good parts of original starcraft campaign levels were the rpg ones so we have opposite taste
I hated the campaign so much I cheated infinite resources to myself so I could see the story which is what I actually cared about, sc2 fixed all the bullshit that made sc1 so fricking annoying to play
Campaign as in missions? Starcraft 2 Wings of Liberty, there isn't much that comes close to the variety of missions, and there's loads of modded campaigns now, the two sequels have good campaigns but they aren't quite as good and the story becomes lolzberg
Campaign as in story? Maybe Warcraft 3, a bit harder to pick to be honest, maybe og starcraft, maybe Homeworld, maybe Age of Mythology, I seem to remember the story of Dawn of War being very good too
It's between starcraft and command and conquer. Because sc2 story was shit(the Terran campaign is decent). Command and conquer is a lot of fun and the live action actors give it a unique spin.
The china AOM was dogshit for a lot of reasons but they had so much potential to do a kino campaign where you're a general serving an emperor who lost the mandate of heaven and you get a choice of whether or not to try and topple him yourself or stay loyal to the bitter end.
It has a good story, but that's because they took heavy inspiration from Black Company books.
Lots of good recommendations here I see, that's good since I'm looking for RTS to play right now. Tried some more obscure ones like Knightshift but it turned out to be pure garbage.
Milk based economy, crazy. Also, it has rpg portion, not just rts.
The problem with Knightshift was not RPG elements, even if they fricked up pace for most of time, imagine starting RTS game and spending first few hours slowly killing wolves with one dude, all while getting back and forth healing spot because wolves hunts in packs lol. True killer was how AI and pathfinding was fricked up greatly, resulting in your own units forming incoherent mess each time they encounter enemy, going into all directions and blocking each other, dying quickly. I gave up at some point simply because of that.
>Sc2 is the pinnacle of rts
That would be broodwar. SC2 is the pinnacle of polished rts. It runs buttery smooth, looks great, has a plethora of modes, AI is very good, and also it has lots of chat/friend features. However, its not as good esport as Broodwar, it kinda lacks the visual clarity, and only Wings of Liberty is a good campaign. The other 2 suck ass.

I agree that esports is cancer, but I still think Broodwar is a better game than SC2 despite being less polished. Its grim aesthetics, its banging soundtrack and the campaign are way better than SC2. SC2 is a very good RTS but a bad broodwar sequel
Age of Empire 2 DE for sure win in terms of quantify and scope. Even without any dlc you get 24 5 to 6 missions long campaigns and 15 standalone scenarios. All ranging from decent to really good. I haven't played all, but my favorite so far are Barbarossa, Babur, Francisco de Almeida, Genghis Khan and Kotyan Khan. People say that Dawn of the Dukes campaigns (Algirdas and Kestutis, Jadwiga and Jan Zizka) are the best, but I haven't finished them yet.
Insofar I haven't been big on the Victors and Vanquished scenarios. Nearly the entire selection are less conventional which in itself isn't too bad, but at least three of the Viking ones are virtually the same shit and two of them didn't even have a proper fail state, while a lot of them also make you start with peanuts and possibly have to rely on discovering Gaia units.
It felt very fresh after sitting through some that were an absolute goddamn slog first thing (like holy frick, don't play this DLC chronologically). Starting in debt, having to hold the line from invading Celts and Franks with the tension of the imminent Saxon betrayal you must be prepared for, preserving old Roman structures that are better than what you can build - pretty fun defense scenario. Perhaps the only one that felt tempting to replay. Need to blast through the rest but I'm suspecting it's not going to get too much better.
Red alert 2 is overrated on music, Hell March and Grinder are so fricking incredible that people apply that to the rest of the very very mediocre ost, if the whole ost had bangers instead of just those two then it would be a different story
I liked Warzone 2100
You start out as cybernetic supermen out to recover from nuclear war (and fight over cans of dogfood) and end up nearly destroying the Earth again once you find out what really caused the apocalypse
I played it as well. Pretty fun game despite some problems, dumb AI especially. But the best campaign? Well, maybe if you care for the atmosphere the most because the game has this cool dark fantasy vibe that's honestly the best part of it.

Speaking of. It's a lot of bullshit that EA double the price of the C&C steam collection out of nowhere after a month. Not that I would buy it anyway, but now for sure I won't.
>Speaking of. It's a lot of bullshit that EA double the price of the C&C steam collection out of nowhere after a month. Not that I would buy it anyway, but now for sure I won't.
Way to make a non issue out of fricking nothing for yourself.
People who wanted it already bought it.
In 3 they give the horde 2 leaders, the experienced one is wc2 style kill em all and the inexperienced one just wants to save his people, also you should really go get a pirated version and play wc3+frozen throne it's amazing
NTA but Blizzard forced all legal versions to downgrade to "Reforged", even if you don't have it linked, it will attempt to download it when you try to run it.
Explain Reforged? Sounds shady that they'd try to get rid of an original version.

Reforged is name for WC3 "remaster" version and textbook example how to NOT make remastered versions. It was outsourced to Asia (south-east Asia if I recall correctly), resulted in absolutely awful graphics that somehow look worse than original (like fricked up shadows) and resemble those cheap MMOs from 2000s, fricked up performance, new bugs and removed some online functionality (they apparently restored it but I'm not sure, I no longer care). All while forcing all existing owners to downgrade and removing original from store. If you happen to have CD version, you can try to go around that but otherwise pirate is your own option.

Not that guy, but if you have the original WC3, the Battlenet Updater will pretty much delete it and replace it the Reforged version.
Reforged has the old look of Warcraft 3 as a "retro mode" along the new remastered look. Now, since it has been ported to a new engine, retro warcraft 3 colors look worse than its original counterpart due to the hdr implementation, it has new bugs, online ladder still is broken, and you are stuck with a 30 something gigs of bloat if you havent bought the reforged version to unlock the remastered graphics.
The original one is around 2 gigabytes in size.
Thanks to reforged my WC3 copy got useless, and I had to find a pirated version to play it again properly. The best version for me is the 1.31.1 version of the original WC3. It supports every resolution, and increased refresh rate

They did the same with diablo 2 and starcraft. The best version for all those games is still the original with some mods to fix stuff that aged poorly.

Brood war, yes, but I think diablo 2, not.
When it comes to broodwar, the original version is free(even though it looks a bit shittier that the original) and the remastered graphics look actually decent because the original artists were involved.
Diablo2 and diablo 2 remastered are separate entities. I play the official copy of the original Diablo 2 and so far, no problems. I think its good that Diablo 2 has never been a part of the new Battle.net

Because Bobby wanted a cheap cash grab they could monetize as another live service with a cash shop selling skins etc so they decided to pull wc3 from its grave , outsourced all the work to malaysian sweatshops who left it broken and unfinished and raped the corpse, the 0.6/10 rating it has is too generous I can't think of a bigger sin in vidya besides EA shutting down Westwood and pivoting command&conquer to mobileshit
NTA but Blizzard forced all legal versions to downgrade to "Reforged", even if you don't have it linked, it will attempt to download it when you try to run it.
said blizzard will intentionally brick your game and remove features if you attempt to buy it and play it legitimately, meaning piracy is the only way you can play the game as god intended before they retroactively ruined it
Original wc3 is a solid 8/10 and frozen throne i would give a 10/10 though I am very biased
I'm not actually sure since I haven't needed to pirate vidya in forever but I'm sure some googling will point you in the right direction, especially given how badly they fricked up the game with the forced remaster
Wings of Liberty has the best single player campaign as far as gameplay goes, but as far as story goes probably Tiberian Sun, still waiting to replay it on open RA, I don't expect to see it by the end of this decade, who knows what happened to that project.
I want to buy the Warwind IP and make a new one.
Lots of good recommendations here I see, that's good since I'm looking for RTS to play right now. Tried some more obscure ones like Knightshift but it turned out to be pure garbage.
aah Polanie II, the "Warcraft 3 killer" (kek), i've just beat it a couple of days before.
To be fair this game has a lot of charm and soul in polish, from units voicelines to the setting with slavic gods, i believe those were changed for international release, making it much more generic. >campaign
2nd was salvagable because it actually included more RTS elements, while 1st and 3rd were snorefests, basically Mirko + 9 dudes each mission.
The story is the most cliche forgetable shit ever. >RTS
after the campaign i thought i could have some fun challenge by playing RTS against multiple hard CPUs, but the AI is pure garbage. You can immediately rush their cows, as long as you don't get in range of enemy woodcutters they won't do anything about it. >RPG
suprisingly good and very fun in multiplayer, i'm currently playing the story scenarios with a friend. One annoyance, some cutscenes can only be initiated and seen by one player (the one who talks to the npc first). Not like the story is any good, but still, if you have someone willing to play with, RPG mode is pretty fun.
Question probably invoking a lot of rage but, in my subjective opinion:
>first Spell force is fun combination of RPG and RTS but can drag a lot due to massive battles and forced RPG sections >second game is hated by fans of first but more balanced and more fun, RPG elements got toned down >third game is hated by fans of 2 and 1 and somewhat fricked up on balance and difficulty (most later missions ends up as massive slaughterhouse due to massive enemy spawn rate) but I still enjoyed it, more than first but less than second game >expansions for third are supposed to be better balanced but they also force GPU to run on 100% all the time so I never played it beyond first level due to overheating GPU, so cannot say
I greatly enjoyed the story of spell force 3, the first expansion retroactively ruins it though, never played the second expansion but that seemed fairly good.
For me it is Command and Conquer 3. I love me some cheesy live action cutscenes and I liked how all 3 campaigns tied together to form a cohesive story rather than how in other cnc games the campaigns all have contradicting endings.
I have a question for Red Alert 3 players. I skipped through the cutscenes and found that in Allied and Japan cutscenes, they both have a sexy end where the girls dress in something sexy for the commander, the soviet campaign doesn't seem to have this. WTF WHY?
Warcraft 4
It's on a new world, there's a WoW DLC with some cataclysm and a bunch of homies just leave azeroth and all the gay shit behind. But they bring too much gay shit, like orcs, so the wars are back on.
It's focused on single player campaign experience, it's about building new kingdoms on the new world
There are seasonal co-op events as Blizzard loves money, a persistent world map where players conquer more land for their faction based on battles fought
Because less multiplayer = less need for balance, the factions can operate wildly different ie. Undead corpse-based economy, Elf faction needs to set up food supply farms but also mana wells.
It's still salvageable, warcraft 4 could still happen, it could still be good
I still cannot believe they fumbled WC3 Reforged so hard. The campaign is actually good so just smoothing it out to a modern UI, updating cutscenes and models is all they needed. Instead they frick up the visual design, don't even fully re-do the campaign cutscenes and even made some of them worse than a 20 year old game.
20 years doesn't really matter when you're comparing two prime Blizzard studios vs 30 pajeets in malaysia with one diversity hire in california co-ordinating over Zoom.
It matters when you had VV redo Diablo 2 and outside of the outcry about female jawline its an immaculate re-release of D2. They put out a survey about a re-reboot, but I would hope they see the massive red flag of trying to sell it a second time if its not a free upgrade for Reforged owners
>Act of War refuse to launch on Win10
damn, i was thinking about playing that again.
High Treason can go frick itself though, that expansion was some unadulterated bullshit.
>Act of War refuse to launch on Win10

Age of empires 4 is just good if you really like that documentary format.
There is barely any characters talking for "the story"

It's between starcraft and command and conquer. Because sc2 story was shit(the Terran campaign is decent). Command and conquer is a lot of fun and the live action actors give it a unique spin.
WC3 hero system was pretty good for singleplayer
The china AOM was dogshit for a lot of reasons but they had so much potential to do a kino campaign where you're a general serving an emperor who lost the mandate of heaven and you get a choice of whether or not to try and topple him yourself or stay loyal to the bitter end.
More tactics than strategy but Myth: The Fallen Lords was 90s ludokino of the highest order.
This game is shit as is Myth 2.
There's no accounting for (bad) taste.
It has a good story, but that's because they took heavy inspiration from Black Company books.
I gave up at some point simply because of that.
dawn of war 1 base-game story was great and my favorite. homeworld 1 is probably 2nd place. i've never played wc3 though.
SC2 campaign has best gameplay and systems, story is not good though. Sc2 is the pinnacle of rts
For me, the best campain goes to these 3 games: Red Alert 2, Warcraft 3,Age of Mythology
Frick off with esport. That killed RTS. Finally going away with the 8/12 group limit is what make SC2 a polished RTS.
I agree that esports is cancer, but I still think Broodwar is a better game than SC2 despite being less polished. Its grim aesthetics, its banging soundtrack and the campaign are way better than SC2. SC2 is a very good RTS but a bad broodwar sequel
>campaign better than sc2
Once again the brood war campaign was fricking dogshit garbage, only the story was good
Age of Empire 2 DE for sure win in terms of quantify and scope.
Best one I've done so far is Vortigern, fun, challenging and a gimmick that doesn't overstay its welcome

The only one I really remember fondly is Red Alert 2

>expansions for third are supposed to be better balanced but they also force GPU to run on 100% all the time so I never played it beyond first level due to overheating GPU, so cannot say
I loved spell force 2. The story, the factions, loved it.

Thanks chan.
>Command and Conquer 3
No such thing
Frick off, CnC 3 is great.
Stop posting fanfics.
have a nice day, moron.
Did you fail pre-school? Study your numbers.
C&C ended at Tiberian Sun and RA2.
Kane's Wraith was good. Stop being a b***h with no taste. 4 is the one you're looking for.
>Kane's Wraith was
no 🙂
>"muh Tiberian Sun"gay
Way to out yourself. 3>1>2>>>>>>>4.
You mean Command and Conquer 4
I have a question for Red Alert 3 players. I skipped through the cutscenes and found that in Allied and Japan cutscenes, they both have a sexy end where the girls dress in something sexy for the commander, the soviet campaign doesn't seem to have this. WTF WHY?
To be Russian is to suffer
There was nothing good about WC3 story.
even the lowest low of WC2 far surpassed WC3's highest high.
Do you enjoy being wrong on purpose?
wc3 marked the death of rts
deal schweatie
Ok boomer
WC2 had almost no story, it's just some small text dump followed by a normal game. The story could have just been in the CD manual.
I liked Spellforce Order of Dawn and Dawn of War Dark Crusade
Play Mental Omega mod for RA2, it has looong campaigns with intricate gameplay.
It's still salvageable, warcraft 4 could still happen, it could still be good
For me? It's age of mythology
I'm a huge sucker for mythology though
Frick you, I liked it.
WC3 I think, RA2 and a bunch of other C&C games had pretty good campaigns as well.
cant play old RTS after sc2, starcraft 2 is UI, hotkey scheme and pathifinding is so good going back to old rts is painful
I really felt that when I tried to play age of empires 2 again, even nostalgia couldn't hold me in
I still cannot believe they fumbled WC3 Reforged so hard.
NTA but I'm still salty over how they removed that one guy head from icon and replaced with some ugly female-like being.
It matters when you had VV redo Diablo 2 and outside of the outcry about female jawline its an immaculate re-release of D2. They put out a survey about a re-reboot, but I would hope they see the massive red flag of trying to sell it a second time if its not a free upgrade for Reforged owners
>Populous
These were the days.
Also Populous? The Beginning is much more of a RTS. Also has some mods and fan campaigns to this day.
>Act of War refuse to launch on Win10
>Knightshift turns out to be crap
Fug. I'm running out of RTS options in my backlog.
Still have Ancestors Legacy, CoH 2 and Iron Harvest on Steam/GOG backlog, are these worth giving a try?
>Act of War refuse to launch on Win10
damn, i was thinking about playing that again.
High Treason can go frick itself though, that expansion was some unadulterated bullshit.
Try it anyway, maybe my version is fricked.
Doesn't the GoG version of act of war still work on win10? I think it's only the steam version that doesn't work
Like I said - no idea, I'm working with what I have.
>never played it but remember years ago friend saying its great
>saw recently theres fan made open source remake/remaster
opinions on this game?
