You recall incorrectly. Even if you max out cold mastery and orb, the cold immunes are going to be stonewalling and distracting you long enough to get murdered by the insane hordes. Maybe you forgot about the resist penalties, and no, Malah's reward doesn't even come close to offsetting them. >with shit gear

I get what you mean but it's not entirely impossible, just time consuming. In the end, Sorceress can teleport and bypass a lot of the immunes, and the first wall is all the way in Travincal. Even then, what you really need is patience and decent cast rate, so you can deal with the immunes by cornering them inside a building and spamming telekinesis (so they can't cast hydra as much that shreds your merc) while your merc chips it down little by little even with average gear.
In general a blizz/orb+fire Sorceress can at that point farm the shit out of Hell Andy and Ancient Tunnels, while light sorc has Countess, Andy and Arcane Sanctuary (perhaps Pits as well). Chaos Sanctuary and Baal aren't the only hell farming spots in the end.
1.13 if you want mods
remaster if you just want the game to look and run well.
if you want mods go with PlugY at the very least.
some like POD and MedianXL are basically complete rewrites of the game, good if you already have 1000s of hours in normal D2 and want something different.
if you want a challenge, install the Shitfest mod. it multiplies mob spawns by 40x. you have to carve a path through monsters to actually be able to walk across the map. you'll kill so much shit that you'll be lv40 by the end of Act 1.
I detest seeing answers other than a private server of the original 1.13c or so. D2 is a multiplayer game, Battlenet has a waiting queue now, and D2R is paying for something that's been free to all since forever, on all kinds of servers with all kinds of QoL.

On the other hand, the resurrected version is honestly far better and overall it feels smoother to play and the graphics are surprisingly good to the point you don't need light mods as opposed to the frickery of Diablo 2
D2R is a very good remake and it brilliantly captures the feel, soul, art design of the originals which are things even Blizzard had fricked up in their other Diablo games. It was surprisingly good, up there with Resident Evil 2 and Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition.
and I usually hate remakes because they're either buggy and lazily done cashgrabs or they frick up the aesthetics of the original by simply using absurdly detailed textures and wonky models that lack the original style.

Play Diablo 2 Resurrected, offline you can change the difficulty on demand. Online you can make games private or public depending on if you wanna trade, group, want help, or to play alone. In the last difficulty a rare uber version of Diablo can spawn, if you need help with that again there are Discords where you just ask and someone will come help for a +1 in the Discord.
D1 atmosphere the game, slow challenging but satisfying with a few quality of life issues (devolutionX for the closest experience on a modern computer, Beelzbub changes a lot)
D2 its 1 but with more stuff, but 2 levels choke hold any builds for area attacks and another has loss of control annoying ass mobs so its good QoL, but honestly I like 1 better for its atmosphere and better level balance
D3 visually bland but after a million patches its Diablo by way of speed running and action, fun but not the same
D4 is D3 trying to be D2 but with with a mobile games engagement tactics, so you don't get the classic gameplay, you can't tell what shit is, and its a massively tedious step down from all of them

Eh, it was a product of it's time. You kind of had to be there to experience the genre defining when it happened. As far as I'm concerned, Mousepads maphack was mandatory. Not for the map/boss mods (though the mods were nice because frick fana FE manaburn dolls) but for the various QoL tweaks.

If you want easier and more forgiving game if you are a casul, play Resurrected or the latter patches.
