      always has been. Upgrading your weapons armor and leveling up too. Many won't admit they play these games with nothing more than self imposed challenges because they're actually not the hardest out there.

    Dark Souls games include a ton of systems that can be used to make the game easier. Be it magic, jolly cooperation, long distance weapons, throwing items, NPC summons, etc. The only real challenge is decifering how to access said systems.

      Both have an early history of making some great titles. Everyone falls off, and they didn't ask people to over hype them. Yea kojima is moronic when unchained but we gave him that privilege. Miyazaki seemingly didn't have many diverse ideas but some of what he's made has been great. We're the ones that keep asking for more, and it's ok if he doesn't really have more to give. I don't think that makes him a hack.

    not having a difficulty option is a red pill I want more games to take. GTA and From games, both very different, are both elevated by the approach. you can't just arbitrarily manipulate numbers without damaging the gameplay vision.

      Plenty of weapons deal ridiculous damage and stagger without much stat investment. Pyromancy only requires attunement investment and works for SL1 since the flame is all you have to upgrade. Soul sorcery is soul sorcery especially dark bead and the hidden broken spell aural decoy. Miracles are pretty strong especially the heals wrath of the gods and sunlight/moonlight blade. Havels armor exists but the havel ring and FaP ring allow for easy access to high poise the wolf ring too.

    Do the Mario (approach)

    50% of the game: Relatively easy to get to the final boss and reach the credits.
    Other 50%: Post-game content that is actually challenging, with some nice CBT at the end.

    both are valid approaches to making games, but each side acts as if the other is the better and sometimes only way, when both can coexist because everyone has an itch they need to scratch. casual and hardcore games are both fine and neither are inherently better and worse than another

    Different approaches benefit different games. That being said, I personally prefer the latter approach. It's not just true for hard games like Dark Souls adding more engagement and immersion, it also allows for easy games like Kirby to be comfy and lighthearted.
