Nearly all white people actually have those. They're just subcutaneous until sun exposure flips them "on". Freckly people just have ones that show up on the surface level of their skin more easily. There's an interesting video showing how it looks with UV light here:

No it's not, your job as a translator is to make things make sense to whatever country you're localizing for, literal translation is stiff, confusing and lifeless and only an amateur would do that

I feel like "kiddy-lover" or something similar would be more in the same spirit of how the Japanse use "e-girlcon". Slightly more playful and less serious, but still definitely considered a bad thing. You won't hear "e-girlcon" in a news report about child abuse, for example.

They do use the loan-words "pedophile" and "child molester" in Japan, but idk if they have a more native word for the same concept.

People like you are why they just translate it to "pedophile" to play it safe. Just like you, there are plenty of people that will accuse them of some malicious ulterior motive if they try to find an accurate translation. No different from the people in this thread claiming there's some leftist agenda behind using the word "flawless" instead of "white" for skin.

I'm saying the two words are used differently in their respective languages. "Cradle-robber" would probably be another good one that I've heard people use before. It's obviously still a negative word with the same meaning, but not a stuff legal one like "pedophile". It's like the difference between translating something to "officer" versus "cop". It'll depend on what character is saying the word and how they're using it.

              wouldn't "girl-lover" fit more?
e-girlcon IS a gendered word after all, used for people who like e-girls (so, female girls)

Yeah, but if I heard the word "girl-lover", it would normally be a young boy saying it to accuse another young boy of being weird for liking girls.

Did you people both reply to the wrong post?

Anyway, the Japanese word for "pedophile" is 小児性愛者 or "shonen-seiai sha"
You can search for that term on Japanese news websites and get a shitload of articles using it. It's what would be the most one-to-one translation for "pedophile". If they were using the word "e-girlcon", it would look super unprofessional or creepy. "e-girlcon" is just a word that otaku/nerds use and normal young people would use to jokingly accuse each other of being creepy degenerates.

Exactly. When they say it, they're referring to a lack of blemishes on the skin. They're use of "white" when referring to skin is closer to "clear" in English.

Shiroi (白い) is an i-adjective describing something as the color white, it has NOTHING to do with "clear" or "blemishes"
I know it's hard to accept that brown is an ugly color, but it's an untold truth, whether people publicly admit it or not : /

You're correct, but the translator is aiming for something different than a literal "word for word" translation. This is the same reason there are a bajillion different English translations of the Bible, which is originally Hebrew, Greek, and some Aramaic. It's nice to have multiple translations of different types to compare and develop a better understanding of the original meaning.

For example, "white skin" would be a very word-for-word and literal translation. It communicates the individual word meanings well, even if it might sound like an odd phrasing for a native English speaker to use. "Fair skin" would be a good thought-for-thought translation, because it is used in English to mean "white skin" sometimes, but also carries the connotation of a complement on beauty. "Flawless skin" would be a paraphrase or functional equivalent because the reader no longer knows that the original word means "white" but probably has an easy time understanding that Yukari is giving a complement.

Unfortunately, in today's American infected world, you can't tell people they're white and have it be considered a compliment. It's either a racist compliment or an insult.

Western society is filled with white people and doesn't have an emphasis on "white skin". If anything the West is obsessed with Black folk and tanned skin, so this line wouldn't make sense.

Contrast to Japan, and most asian countries in general, where most people are "yellow" and there is the belief that "white skin" = beauty while "dark skin" = ugly. This is because traditionally only plebs had to work outside all day and get tanned skin whereas royalty and affluent people stayed inside and had access to beauty products so their skin was typically whiter.

Amerimutts hate whites so much they now hate anything with light skin since it reminds them of whites

Americans worship Black folk and black skin. Why do you think they would understand someone being "white" as praise?

So what’s the translation look like in some of your (third world) mother tongues? You thirdies are always crying about “American” translations but nobody ever posts how awful every other non English or Japanese localization is by comparison. It’s always full of dumb thirdie cultural references or removed to appease your religions altogether.

I can kind of understand why they did it. We don't compliment people on being white, because it's our default look. We maybe say something if someone comes back tanned, because that usually means they were on vacation, at the beach or generally outdoors and active. And even then we usually say tanned or pale, not brown or white tho.

Honestly, this line seems like it could just have been changed to what it was to sound more natural. But localizers do fear the word "white" as much as they fear character ages these days, so I can understand why you'd jump to the conclusion that it's censorship (and it very well could be).

      Anonymous

I don't even think it's a "fear" thing. I never hear anyone say, "Wow, your skin is so white!" as a complement, even when it's just us white people talking amongst family or something. It carries the same connotation as "pale" these days, so I would interpret someone saying, "You're so white!" as them thinking I look like I'm gonna pass out.

"You have such clear skin!" or "You have such fair skin!" would sound like more natural complements, so I think the localization is actually good.

        Anonymous

Yeah I agree. The English line sounds more natural which is why I think it might not be for censorship reasons. I have seen many examples that I couldn't defend though that were clearly some shithead going "Well this racist/sexist stuff won't fly here!" even if it's actually not.

Because calling someone pale at the beach is not a compliment in the states. Same reason why they don't directly translate saying someone has a small face. This is a really common edit to make in translation and has nothing to do with race.

There are so many shitty translations in the world but for some reason the only ones I ever see b***hed about are things like this where its actually a decent translation.

Like when everyone got assmad about translating キョドる as "sus" in that one anime when it eas literally a shortened, slang form of 挙動不審

Pretty much. I used to participate in them years ago and occasionally I'd have good discussions with people, but usually any rational explanation is either ignored or attacked. I remember one time seeing people say that kana only games are harder to read than games with kanji and I said that yeah, I remember having a phase like that too, but after you gain enough experience, kana only games—while not preferable—aren't hard anymore. Then I was told that I don't know Japanese and that kana only can never be easy.

Kanji ain't shit tbh. You just grind that out. The real language barrier is shit like their cracked out word order that doesn't even tell you the tense until the very end of a sentence or trying to figure out the metaphorical uses of 掛ける and 付ける or how often they use じゃない in positive sentences or fricking COUNTERS or having to learn enough social shit to understand when they say "yes" but actually mean "no".

i wish i could understand why they localize a character literally saying "senpai..." to "leader-san..."
do they think people understand honorifics enough to get adding -san to names, but they won't know what senpai means?

      Anonymous

They keep honorifics but change the name order around. Like Yukari will call Ken, "Ken-kun" in the English dub when what she actually says is Amada-kun. That already doesn't make any sense, but it gets funnier since that isn't even consistent because then they don't change the name order around for cases like when Mitsuru is talking to you, she will call you by your last name.

Regarding the leader and senpai thing, they use senpai in the dub text often to refer to characters so that also just doesn't make sense.

Honestly the whole script must have been done by like 5 different people that weren't on the same page or something, I really don't know what happened.

To the gays arguing about e-girlcon ITT, I have to wonder why the hell you guys aren't just reading the jp wikipedia page on it. Shit is fascinating.
There's an entire section talking about how it was acceptable because people normally married at teen years etc. shit that reads like the usual reasoning you'd see from a e-girlcon here.
It's also plain to see that they treat e-girlcon as separate from pedophilia or at least the term pedophilia isn't as super loaded as it is in english there since there's also a section that talks about psychiatric definitions for sexual attraction to that age range and it's where I learned they have a separate word for pedophilia in 小児性愛, which redirects to a wikipedia page called ペドフィリア that is separate from ロリタ・コンプレックス

All I know is if you read a story with the pedo tag on syosetu, you're likely in for some infant or toddler fricking in the story. At least up to about 6 years old or so. I guess the yellow hat is a big part of it.
After that is e-girlcon. Authors use the word pedo (or e-girlpedo/pedoe-girl) when they give warning about the kids being younger in the story too.
      Here's a good example
      https://novel18.syosetu.com/n3596ie/
      The beginning of the synopsis
      >*Contains cruel depictions, sexual depictions that go beyond e-girl and fall into the category of pedophilia. If you do not accept it, please back your browser.

That's the extent of my knowledge of how Japs use pedo and e-girlcon differently.
Actually no, I was reading a 2ch thread about a e-girlcon eroge from early 00s and they were arguing this difference between e-girlcon and pedophile in the thread come to think of it, I was kind of amazed. Or maybe they were arguing about whether e-girlcon applies to both 2D and 3D. Either way it was surprising to see them having the same arguments that you see on here as far back as 20 years ago.

Top would unironically have a different meaning/unintended idea in the west. Censorship is changing the original text to get rid of it's intended meaning. Something like getting rid of a joke aimed at trannies. When you change the original text because it would bring an idea the original didn't intend to, that's proper localization
"Flawless" is good enough imo but if you wanted it to be closer to pale and beautiful or something like that

      Anonymous

      >different meaning/unintended idea
No, the idea is exactly the same. That her pale, white skin is a desirable trait. The same is true in the West, which is why skin lightener is the most popular beauty product on the planet.

        Anonymous

        >exactly the same
It's bait/moronation but I'll play along. The idea is not the same. The japanese word they use, "shiroi" is just describing a color and has no relation to race. They have different words to describe white people/foreigners. The english word "white" could mean the color or it could mean white people. Even if it's obvious which meaning they were trying to use, using white could bring to mind the unintended UNUSED idea of of white people. Pale is the only word that would basically be exactly the same. Even though they're saying her skin is beautiful because it's lighter, they're not saying it in relation to white people (which they DO sometimes, but when they do they use words specifically for white people/foreigners) but just normal asian beauty standards/pure skin complexion

this is a proper translation though because culturally, its about desirable beautiful skin. in the west, people literally get tans which they believe look good. surely now you see the conflict with saying "your skin is so white and beautiful". Having white skin is not the same as having beautiful skin in the west because western people get tans purposefully

The OP translation is what you are asking for but you have been baited by OP into thinkkng otherwise because he tied it to a hot button issue. Any amount of translation from a langauge as distant fom English requires a level of interpretation or you will get gibberish.

The issue is that the woke left or whatever comes up with these absurd statements, but it's very hard to actually find good arguments against them.

        >You should rename the "master" branch to the "main" branch
"Renaming it will break stuff" is a pretty weak argument, and not really backed up by anything except for extreme outlier scenarios.

        >"Blacklist" and "whitelist" and problematic language, you should rename them to "denylist" and "allowlist".
Despite the former being well established terms, arguably, the latter terms are better, since they more clearly define what the things are. If you hear "allowlist" for the first time you can figure out what it means.

Basically, outside of the notion that these sorts of changes are clearly absurd, pointless, and don't actually fix anything, I personally haven't heard any concrete, empirical points against these sorts of changes. On the flip side, "these are very easy changes to make and don't hurt anyone" is largely a true statement, and for basically anyone sane it's easier to just cave in and make them, rather than obstinately standing up against them, since you'll immediately fall under suspicion once someone asks "why exactly are you so against doing this?"

I'd consider myself pretty liberal, and I think these sorts of things are moronic, I hate it whenever it happens, and I want everyone involved to just frick off forever. It's the same shit how every open source project apparently needs a code of conduct or whatever now.

          Anonymous

the problem is that the actual argument against it is "stop trying to sanitize language to satisfy your own white guilt/inferiority complex, you stupid fricking b***h". Like, that's it, that's the real argument, and it is impossible to debate it because they do not hold the same fundamental values as us and do not care about those principles at all. And they're the ones who are currently ascendant socially and politically, so just making that argument and telling them to frick off doesn't end well, so instead you have to try and hold the line with a bunch of weak, fake arguments in the face of their inane complaining.

There is no second meaning to '白'. It's inaccurate because there is nuance or a second meaning in the Japanese. It's inaccurate because of the meaning it has in English, which is that Caucasians are superior to other races. That's why it was changed. Anything else is pure cope. Feel free to think it was a good change or not, but don't lie to yourself. It was done to appease the sensibilities of westerners who cannot help themselves but view everything through a racial lens.

    Professional translator here

White doesn't mean shes literally white, like a white person white, it means that her skin is pale which is seen as a positive thing to have in Japan. But in western cultures calling someone "pale" is generally an insult so just taking the entire phrase of 白くてキレイ and just using the word "flawless" is not a bad decision at all

The confusion could stem from westerner's interpretation of what "white" means. It would be weird if yukari praised mitsuru for her race, especially given that they're the same race.

They should have used "beautifully pale" to ensure the the skin color praise is gotten across while also getting rid of the negative connotation of "pale".

This example may seem minor, and in most cases it would be, but the well has been poisoned so horrendously that to an extent I don't blame people speaking out. What about using "pure as snow" as a description?

        Anonymous

Not him but I already had a better replacement here

The confusion could stem from westerner's interpretation of what "white" means. It would be weird if yukari praised mitsuru for her race, especially given that they're the same race.

They should have used "beautifully pale" to ensure the the skin color praise is gotten across while also getting rid of the negative connotation of "pale".

It addresses the skin color, negative connotation of "pale", and does not have the potential racial connotation either.

The same deranged commies would complain about the implication that pale can be beautiful, racialize it. So you have the same problem on top of it sounding unnatural.

I did read that, but just tacking on the adjective doesn't really beat the pale allegations and makes it sound more like an underhanded, passive aggressive statement, or at the very least someone very socially awkward.

I bet if this was the exact line in the OP pic, people would still be b***hing that they added the word "snow" when "yuki" isn't present in the original and still be complaining that "white" isn't present when "shiroi" is. This thread is only halfway people arguing about accuracy anyway. There are definitely posters in here that just want the word white included because they just want something that could be interpreted as glorifying the "white race".

Adding snow as a word would be an understandable point of contention, but one that is just as if not more acceptable when applying the same rhetoric as this thread while including more of the original term's connotations. The rest of your post sounds more like inventing an enemy in your head to get mad at, and the opposite at least has actual precedent considering other lines in games talking positively about white skin have been outright flipped into insults. Accuracy via context is important, and I despise how awful jobs have caused people who know nothing to shit on the few examples that are actually well done, but the root cause are the ones abusing their position.

Nah, I'm pretty sure they just want the lines translated accurately. You know this is true because you'd never see the reverse here where people would want a line changed from the original meaning to something that glorifies the white race.

There's an entire section talking about how it was acceptable because people normally married at teen years etc. shit that reads like the usual reasoning you'd see from a e-girlcon here.
It's also plain to see that they treat e-girlcon as separate from pedophilia or at least the term pedophilia isn't as super loaded as it is in english there since there's also a section that talks about psychiatric definitions for sexual attraction to that age range and it's where I learned they have a separate word for pedophilia in 小児性愛, which redirects to a wikipedia page called ペドフィリア that is separate from ロリタ・コンプレックス

while I am normally on the side of total localizer death even I cannot fault them for this because the actual intent of the line(yukari compliments mitsuru's skin) is unchanged and you know full well that if they had directly translated it as "white" there would have been millions of morons complaining about it being racist, somehow. This is the same reason I give them a pass for replacing the troony with a crazy woman: it was unreasonable for me to expect them to keep it, so I accept them changing it to something neutral instead of replacing it with some woke horseshit as the best they could do. They could have replaced the line with yukari complimenting mitsuru's confidence or some other garbage on the grounds that having girls care about their appearance is sexist, and instead they kept it as close as they could without drawing a bunch of unnecessary heat. I am willing to forgive this and ultimately declare that this translation is far better than I expected it to be, and that if I want better quality then the impetus is on me to just learn Japanese.

Because white means pale in this context, not caucasian? Japanese people traditionally consider pale skin as a sing of wealth, because it means that you weren't out in the fields working.
The like "you skin is so pale and pretty" would sound super weird in English because in the west people like tanned skin. Calling someone pale is almost an insult, like telling them they look ill.

they should have used "fair" because that's the word actually used in english to refer to pale skin in a positive way.

Would they though? I don't think whiter skin is usually a desirable trait if you're already caucasian.
Nobody would complement a white person for being whiter that other white people, or at least I can't imagine it.
I do agree that obviously white people are generally considered more attractive than other races, but that's not the point.

              Anonymous

historically whiter skin was desirable on white women, with most old-timey makeup essentially being white powder. This is because there are only two attractive skin tones on white people: tanned and #FFFFFF, and being tanned was historically associated with being poor and having to be outside all the time so pure white was preferred. That's not the case anymore but having pure white skin on a girl is still desirable if they can't hold a tan, because the alternatives are red, freckly, or blotchy.

              Anonymous

There's literally a word for nice white skin, which we're talking about. But a teenager is likelier to say "white and pretty" instead of "fair" to mean the same thing.

It's neither attractive nor unattractive on its own. Most white Americans dunk on people for being super pale. I'm not that old, and all my friends growing up used to laugh about being "blinded" by looking at our pale blonde friend and I vividly remember kids complaining about how pale they were. Lots of white women still go out getting tans intentionally these days, even if that's less of a thing now that people are more aware of it causing cancer and making your skin age prematurely. This exists in the same society that has literary figures like Snow White and generally ranks Anglo features as "sexiest" or "most beautiful" since most people (and especially wealthy people that are healthy and famous) are white. Whiteness on its own, for most Americans, is just kind of a nothingburger.

Like if you complemented a white girl on how white her skin was, she would probably think you were a weirdo. A black girl would probably appreciate it if you were also black (since black people tend to talk a lot about how light/dark someone is), but probably think you're a skinhead nazi creeper with jungle fever if you said that and you were white.

"white and pretty" doesn't sound weird at all. no reason to change it to pale, because only the most brainrotted subhuman would interpret that as "caucasian and pretty."

          Just say you are ESL.

You didn't offer a single counterpoint moron.
He's right, just because westoids hear "white" and immediately think of caucasians doesn't mean that her describing the color of one girl's skin has anything to do with race.
The only ESLs here are you 'tards for thinking the posters in this thread are assuming the same. There's some very obvious nuance missed here in this discussion only if you're a third worlder, which you all are.

they should have used "fair" because that's the word actually used in english to refer to pale skin in a positive way.

definitely using "white and pretty" as an insult the next time an anon posts something unintelligible or awkwardly worded.

"White and pretty" is more accurate than "flawless" and more natural in this context than "fair and pretty."

Can someone provide 1 (one) scene in a western TV show or game where a character praises another's skin for being white?
Bear in mind we can find hundreds of examples of this in Japanese games alone.

You will literally not find it at all since whiteness is demonized in the west.

The thought process is if white is pretty, danger hairs will interpret it as black isn't pretty. It's literally just trying to prevent moronic racist white women from screeching about racism.

if you watch anime you might notice that when there's a scene where someone is eating a common comment is that "the flavor is mild." when you think about it that doesn't really make sense in an american context. it might even be considered an insult like saying it's not seasoned. most people are smart enough though to understand the context of the statement and intuit that it is a compliment and that nips must like bland food.

in the same way anyone with room temperature iq should be able to understand that yukari is making a compliment and that japs must like pale skin. the only reason this line was changed and the other example is not is because of political motivations.
