If someone on this board vehemently defends megas chances are you are speaking with someone under 25 who grew up with Kalos.
If someone on this board vehemently shits on megas chances are you speaking with someone under 25 who grew up with Unova.

If someone on this board vehemently assumes anyone with an opinion is younger than them chances are you are speaking with someone over the age of 30 who still browses this place because he’s a manchild that can’t let go of a series from his childhood, despite not enjoying it anymore.

Zillenial here. I’m under 25 and played Kalos when I was 13.
I hated it back then and I hated it now, but I had the advantage of being able to play the earlier games from before my time to compare them. I was 12 playing B2W2 and thought the 3DS was kinda gay

Granted, the main reason why I hated gen6 were the hideous overworld models.
The big-headed chibi characters looked convincing enough in 2D but don’t translate at all to this style. I don’t understand why this isn’t just as rightfully derided as the soulless chibis in BD/SP

          >I don’t understand why this isn’t just as rightfully derided as the soulless chibis in BD/SP
They are proportional enough to not be play-mobil tier.
Gen 6's character models were higher fidelity than Gen 7's in battles anyway.

They still look like bootleg Nendoroids that barely emote. The little frowny faces they draw on them during dramatic scenes are comical as hell

          Anonymous

Because it was going from pixel chibis to model chibis and was more appropriate for the 3DS hardware.
BDSP is going from proportional character models to bad model chibis that are regressive to the already underwhelming art direction for SwSh given the switches power.

A pokemon becoming a super saiyan and being able to compete in the meta is objectively cool compare that with
    >z-moves-You do a stupid dance. The pokemon doesn’t even change. And it’s a single move
    >gigantmax: Pokemon becomes a parade float, the special of-max moves are often worse than the generic one unless your CHARIZARD
    >tera: sissy crown
    >regional: the actual Pokémon gets nothing, you just found it has an off colored cousin, completely pointless
The only thing that compares is game freak just buffing that pokemon directly (like Torkoal getting Drought) but that’s almost never happens

regionals were cool but they fricked them up immediately after Alola.
Alolan forms (for the most part) felt roughly equals with their Kanto counterparts, the same cannot be said for regionals with exclusive evolutions like Obstagoon or Cursola that basically let the originals sink further into irrelavence.
And now we got regionals in all but name with convergents and paradoxes which have dex numbers and just bloat everything.

japs. super sayian kind of dragonball transformations.

it's a concept everybody likes but nearly nobody understands. It is not just a temporary evolution or "le cooler transformation". It has a very specific sense, super sayian 2/3 kind especially of overcoming the already set limits.

Aesthetics of Mega Evolution are similar to Burst Mode from Digimon Savers - something already fully evolved breaks past its limits through friendship, and gets an extra transformation that changes only minor details but overflows with power.

Closest I've seen aesthetics-wise to Gigantamax was in the first Shaman King anime. First it introduced the idea of high-level shamans transforming their partner spirits into kaiju-sized "Giant Oversouls". Then near the ending the villain empowers some of his followers with "Super-Giant Oversoul" forms to delay the heroes - they all look weird and exaggerated (e.g. a giant knight with a lance is now a giant lance with limbs), and one of them explodes and dies from being unable to control his new power.

It also appeals to the, i don't know, 2 pokemon players that understood the pokémon lore?

As do all the other powerups. Gigamax more than all the others since it's literally "pokemon becoming real pokemon"

In that sense. Megaevolution does this too, so megaevolved pokemon indeed become "realer" pokemon, however its an energy so strong that they cant handle that it kills them quickly

The same reason that shonen use that, it is a simple and visual way to show an improvement in a character.

Now add to that the sale of merchandise, if you had at least one figure or any item of your favorite character, now there is the temptation to buy an alternate version of it.

It seems like lazy writing to me, but I can't deny its success with the masses and the money it represents.

Battle gimmicks, or Phenomena as GF/TPC calls them, are filled with these tropes seen in anime and other Japanese media, especially those in Pokémon's target demographic.
    >Mega Evolution = Shonen super mode transformations
    >Z-Moves = Super moves
    >Dynamax = Make my monster grow
    >Terastal = Magical girl transformations

If you like shonenshit like DBZ or Naruto, pokemon getting a super form with the power of friendship is just cool, simple as. Wish they restricted Mega Evolution to mons you had max friendship AND affection with so it'd take even a little effort instead of just breaking the campaign outright.

Yeah because it doesn’t use the power of friendship it uses a space rock

They followed the pretty obvious playground thought process of "But what if Mewthree WAS real? What if Charizard COULD evolve" and ran with it. It really sucks that GF just removes things arbitrarily though but Terra and mega evolutions as a combo sounds unfun and busted.
