I used to play it with all the other weird kids in the arcade at the pictures. The home versions were a bit pants, though, so I never bothered with them.

Grew up playing along with some of the best players in the US at the time. Was never on their level but being around d them really forced me tot somewhat 'git gud'

      >tfw players were mocked for holding onto the bars back in those days. Now with how much the culture has changed I'm the one who looks weird for not holding onto the bar.

PS2 JP Extreme was hands down the best and still holds up today.

Those DDR anons who have a Round1 in their city are truly blessed.

      >tfw a Round1 opened up a location in my hometown a year after I moved out of state.

      It's not fair bros...

PS2 era was perfectly fine and hinged almost entirely on the quality of your pad.

Played shit tons of DDR and Stepmania back in the day. Look back pretty fondly at it.
I also had that Xbox exclusive dance game that came with a plastic mat which I don't remember the name of. Like DDR still exists to this day with A20 IIRC but it doesn't feel the same.

Had it. Loved it. Now fricking no where has the arcade machine.

Do it. If you're not in shape now, you will be.

    >suffered through the PS2 DDR games with a shitty pad stapled to a slab of wood
    >lived within walking distance of the place where Cobalt Flux pads were manufactured
    >too young to work at that time
    >couldn't convince my parents to shell out the $300 for one
    >fast forward to now
    >adult
    >decent job
    >decent income
    >no cobalt flux
    >only options are shitty polish garbage pads with inflated prices due to shipping
    >or spending thousands on StepManiaX pads

Cheap metal pads are uber shitty and cobalts and similarly decent or better have always been pricy

grew up with a jps2 and was obsessed with ddr for years, the arcade years from 4thmix to ddrextreme were some of my fondest memories

my old flashflashrevolution account says it’s 20years old, i spent a ton of time with dwi and stepmania, and was even a global mod on bemanistyle

haven’t thought about any of this in like a decade wow

flashbacking even harder, sites like DDRManiaX, ddruk, and there was some american site whose name evades me that kept a database of arcades with cabinet locations

4thmix was my absolute favorite, the ones with player selection screens were peak

i recognize that name but its not that one, i think it was originally a fansite for florida but grew into the de facto american cabinet database

Me, and I still have a pad and laptop set up as an indoor exercise machine.

Just lube up and buy one of these. There's no decent alternative for less.

Let me emphasize: never buy a cheap $80-150 metal pad. They all have terrible sensitivity. They are sub foam tier. Those break but will at least work well til they do.

The time I truly played it was around the time frame of MAX, MAX2 and Extreme. Extreme in my eyes is basically peak DDR.

konami still has an assload of ip (more than back then even considering they bought hudson), they just seem to rarely do anything with them because of [...]
they'd rather just make pachinko machines and mobileshit, im almost surprised that they still bother with bemani stuff.

Probably because it's a concurrent income stream thanks to them being arcade games you keep putting money into to play.

That "mobile games is the future" CEO they hired basically killed old Konami outright. Though weirdly the Bemani sector isn't really *that* effected. They keep making new games every couple years for basically all the current franchises, though unlike the glory days they don't really give their in-house artist any ability to do shit outside of churn out music. I miss when they got to release albums and do live shows.

I use to sweat buckets playing ddr. Had to hold onto the bar and could never do the insanely difficult songs flawlessly. DDR, Daytona, Point Blank and capcom fighter except 3rd strike were my jams.

DDR was basically my main source of exercise as a teen.

I used to be a fanatic. Lost a ton of weight plying it and did some competition in Vegas in middle school, but got schooled by all the asian bar huggers. I could play on Heavy all day long for most songs and I would not touch that bar as a matter of pride.

For my first paycheck for my first car in high school, I bought a sweet Pioneer stereo system and would drive around playing DDR songs in my shitty rural cowboy town.

    >ai ai ai, I'm your little butterfly

    It was a better time.
